Eddie Jones is the most underappreciated, misunderstood character in the game. He genuinely thinks about the game in a different, more shrewed way to most, the Pep Guardiola of rugby. People say tirelessly they want the game to modernise but then laugh at his radical suggestions. I remember pundits laughing at his refusal to call numbers 16-23 'subs'. Nowadays, every France team selected announces "finishers" just as Jones coined. He has delivered results nearly everywhere he has been, across differing eras and styles discovering some of the greatest players along the way. The England coach is one of the toughest in the sport and England fans of 2015 would have given anything for numbers like Eddie's since then. If we win the WC or not (I don't think my nerves can take it), Eddie should (and I know he won't) go down as one of the greatest coaches of all time.

@@geoffhiggins742 Off the top of my head... 1. Calling subs finishers, thereby radicallising how the 23 plays. 2. Suggesting a future of not playing players in traditional positions (hybrid players) which is starting to come to light in how Villiere and Nowell are used and how he picked 2 fullbacks against France to dismantle their ariel game. 3. Although the use of dual playmakers wasn't a new thing in 2015, his idea to play two 10s at 10 and 12 as an axis up to 2019 was certainly a step on again and the envy of most international teams. Squidge also points out the radical suggestions of Japan not kicking and becoming a running team, using backs in the breakdown to clear out hence halving the average ruck speed and winning SR and how he tries to flow between attacking shapes phase after phase.

This is the best draw England could hope for. The Left side of the draw is a complete meat grinder where sides have to field the best 23 almost every game. Whoever comes out on top will have lost several starting players to injury. Meanwhile England can afford to rest and rotate a few.
@Alex554552 жыл бұрын

@Alaster-2 жыл бұрын
Not sure when Rugby started adopting it at national level, but we got taught this way - play by play positional - playing league at high school (NRL feeder school) in the 90s. Each plan (for next set) was called in advance, depending also on field position. Obviously multiple variants available for each zone. Several of us switched to club Rugby for u16s and on, and our halves were using calls like this somewhat based on our League knowledge. Not to the depth as they do now (1-3-3-1 wasn't a thing back then, but we played a 2-3-3 style) but definitely calling the next 3-4 plays and positions required, saved every piggy running about wondering if they have to enter the ruck. There were also triggers for next moves depending on the defence's positions. Our halves for those 3 years (u16s-u19s) were incredibly instinctive players, but they were able to shape it for us piggies so well. (FYI, We won 2 of 3 u19 finals, against arguably bigger and better teams). The teams I played with in opens never really were coached for it, playing much more traditionally with piggies all in a bunch until the backs wanted to hand the ball over...

@adam8722 жыл бұрын
An excellent video that even as an Aussie (we've got history with Eddie on a number of fronts) I've approached with an open mind. A few comments, though. Firstly, Rod MacQueen laid the foundation at the Brumbies and the Wallabies for EJ to follow in both cases. He didn't come up with this stuff all by himself. We also had some very dark times before that semi against the All Blacks in 2003. Frankly we were lucky to even get to the final, because we played essentially one good game all tournament (against the AB's, which plays into your analysis about him targeting particular matches/opponents). We were also lucky to be as competitive in the final as we were, because our set piece was in real trouble. By the time 2005 rolled around EJ's game plan had been superseded, neglected some key areas of the game, and we were embarrassed at Twickenham. He got the sack after that (and several losses on the trot) and rightly so. He was still coaching 2001 era footy. Now clearly he learned from this and his stint as consultant to Jake White was pivotal in the Boks winning in 2007. He also did a great job with Japan in the lead up to 2015. In 2016 he inherited a talented but under performing England side and it's hard to deny the quality of the job he's done with them. I just wonder if he's got it in him to go to that next level. We've got a couple of coaches here in OZ in other codes who are the same and there are some similarities personality wise. They've gotten within striking distance of the summit but haven't been able to finish the job. I think EJ is one of these guys, because he can lose the dressing room every now and then. He's in a good position regardless, though, because he has the biggest and one of the best talent pools in world rugby. I hope Squidge is completely wrong, but there is no way I'm betting against it, because EJ is as cunning as a shithouse rate.

England sorted out a large amount of their discipline issues this year, and I can only assume that that will continue as time goes on. I am Australian and obviously a wallabies fan, however Eddie Jones is as you said constantly looking at the big picture. People can slag on Ford and Farrell all they like, but Eddie knows they are very disciplined and intelligent at organising the pods in the line offensively and in a fluid and pragmatic way. You're exactly right when you highlight the fact that he seems to bring dress rehearsals out of certain ways to play against targeted sides, as the world cup is his job to win and these things don't happen overnight without the help of some very iffy tactics and scrum refereeing interpretations as seen in the last world cup with the Boks. Commenting before watching the video. I don't think England are going to win the world cup but I'm sure they will perform way better than people expect them to. Let's see if this is what your take is, Squidge, but it baffles me that people have watched Eddie Jones for ages and still don't seem to realize he is a master at designing world cup cycle plans, possibly better than every other international coach. The two first years after a world cup are used to see what members of the current squad are still up to standard, and to test a bunch of new players to see who will sink and who will swim. Year 3 is used to polish the squad and start putting a game style in place. In year 4 he tightens the squad and evolves the game plan. Of course I may be wrong here, but I don't think I am, and I also don't think EJ gives much of a toss about 6 Nations wins - I think he uses them to polish and harden his squads for WCs. Just my 2 cents
@dalenewton96972 жыл бұрын
I think quite a few other people do also realise this, but it's a viewpoint that tends not to get heard too much though when talking about the 6N, as it doesn't quite add up with the 'World's greatest tournament' tag the sponsors and media push all the time, right? With Eddie himself, the RFU, mainstream sports media and corporate sockpuppets constantly basically gaslighting the rugby public there is little space left in the comments sections either once those guys are done venting their frustrations either. I agree he doesn't give a flying fuck abot the 6N pretty much. I think its an interesting question but in theory it makes sense to me to be trying a more innovative high risk-high reward strategy, as in my view perhaps England don't quite have the players that some of the other squads do, and a loss by 1 point is still a loss after all in knockout rugby. People are biased by their own national leanings as well and I think its easier to blame the coach than think about whether we have the players or not!

I'm really happy to hear someone acknowledging Farrell as one of the best players in the world. I don't even know why he is so hated but he is so bloody good
@ouiouipiggy43902 жыл бұрын
He is an excellent player, but in many people's opinion a very poor captain which is the root of most dislike for him! Eddie likes him because he follows instructions to the letter, but it is generally accepted (and I certainly believe) that the best captains adapt the game plan as required on the field dependent on circumstances. As well as the Boks played on the day, it was the failure to adjust a plan that wasn't working and adapt to what was in front of them that cost England in the 2019 final - on the field this is the captains responsibility and Farrell was found wanting!

I agree with a lot of this and feel that over the last 2 or 3 years, England have been gradually moving things into place re: set piece, defence and kicking. But their attack just hasn't materialised yet. We lacked pace and physicality in the backs. If Jonny May, Anthony Watson, Manu Tuilagi and Owen Farrell had been fit then we'd be looking very different. I think this is biggest fear Jones has, not having the players able to execute at the world cup. And that's why he's leaving out players like Ford and the Vunipolas.

I honestly think players like Randall and Quirke are good replacement for Youngs. I was also hopeful that Radwan would get more opportunities for England.

Monumentally good video...lots to learn from. One of the things missing from the analysis is how at Harlequins the 9 does a lot of the thinking that Youngs is just not capable of...the other thing is that it has already been proven that you can be a great 10 at a national level, but not have it in the crunch of an international (Ford against South Africa) and vice versa (Cipriani beating South Africa)...England may get to the final, but it will be a repeat of 2019: their bolt will be shot (they looked like a team that had already played 40 minutes at the kick off)...

@@Goubo2000 A lot of them made out to be better than what they actually are tbh. Gregor has done a great job with the players he has. Scotland just don’t have the quality to compete with the best sides, which is why they got comprehensively beaten by Ireland, France and South Africa.

I love watching Scotland. They're a hot mess of a team. On their best day they can genuinely beat anyone in the world but the problem is, can they ever be consistently on their best day? I feel like their overall like of depth is what lets them down. They need perfect conditions to win whereas most other nations have several players who can step in at any position and do a decent job.
