I am just now getting into AoS after sometime playing 40K. Got FyreSlayers and Hedonites of Slaanesh. Beautiful models!!! I just hope AoS continues to get good.

I’m the guy Jay describes. Played some other GW stuff, never touched AoS. The Skaventide trailer piqued my interest but the details about Spearhead sealed the deal and I picked up the launch box. I love playing Spearhead and we’ve had three other guys in our Necromunda group pick up Spearheads to join.

I’ve been wanting to try AoS for a while now. The models have tempted me for a long time. I’m an old gamer and was out of the hobby for a few editions of 40K. I’ve got back into it and bought some 40K models but 40K isn’t what I remembered. I am still painting the models but the constant updates and changes. Skaventide finally pushed me into AoS, I’m going to buy the set this week, whenever I can get to my lgs. I’m excited to give it a try it seems like the general consensus is positive for spearhead and that’s what I’d like to start with. Is the full AoS 4.0 a solid game? Can I get a good gauge of 4.0 through spearhead?
@lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905Ай бұрын
Spearhead is fantastic, and will give you a taste of the full 4.0 experience. The full 2k game is a lot more involved, has more depth and more chunky rules, which can be good or bad depending on what you enjoy.
@tanen7264Ай бұрын
@@lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905 thanks, i was wondering how it compared to AoS. I’ve watched so many videos on AoS I feel I have a good understanding of the game and I didn’t know where the full game stood when compared to it.

I think the 40K 10th ed tagline that Jay was searching for was " Simplified, not simple."

To the point at about 10 mins of complimentary spearheads leading to a full army: para bellum currently does that with their starters and it's fantastic. the old starter and the new starter for a given army are designed to be complimentary instead of redundant

I would say spearhead is a great way to get into the hobby and get people on tables throwing dice and moving models. But in my local group it’s actually not great for getting people into the full game. Too many things are different, army rules are completely different, so many “modules” aren’t there in spear head, profiles are completely different, etc. It’s honestly like teaching two different game systems trying to get someone from spearhead to full AoS.

In the first weekend of October we have MOAB in Sydney (Australia) and I’ll be interested to see the AoS turnout because it feels like Old World has sucked all the air out of the fantasy room.

Glad to hear AOS is doing well for you guys and your area but for my area it has been a total bust. It was a big change for what felt like not much gain a lot of the players felt and now no one plays AOS even the AOS die hards. Arguably AOS 4th was a bigger gain for 40k in my area then AOS as they all just migrated to that as they didn't want to leave the GW ecosystem and well everyone already plays 40k. Everyone agrees the models are great but great models alone are not enough to gain interest into a game system as many game systems can attest to. I'd love to AOS thrive in the area again but I'm looking at selling my armies off as it has just completely died an ignominious death.
@lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905Ай бұрын

I like the idea of this. I want the models to paint and like the idea of playing - I won't play 40k again since it's so play not fun, but I did like 1st Ed sigmar. Bought my first spearhead and hoping to join a league soon.

Locally, Skaventide was a bit of a bust, but we’ve had a spike in AOS play with two successful local events. Spearhead, though, has not generated much interest at the two FLGS. Folks like to build their armies

I enjoy AOS, but it’s very much a periphery game for me. I have CoS which I play with once in a while, and Fyreslayers, which I haven’t used since early 3rd edition. I have sprues full of SCE as well, but never built a single one, and I don’t think most of it is legal now.

AoS is definitely moving off the shelves and being played, especially spearhead!
@PaulBushell-w6eАй бұрын
Still playing AoS, though in the process of building Dark Elves for an Old World army. I think some of the problems AoS faces are: the rate of change is too much for some people, the army building tool and faction rules are being locked behind a paywall plus needing to buy the battle tome, the total package is getting a bit too expensive. 40K has these problems too. However 40K has a well established lore which carries it through a lot of the negative stuff. AoS lore is it's weakest link. The lore and stories were actually not too bad in AoS 2, but that was using a lot of old characters from WFB days. The current lore is rather bland and seems to be more of a thinly veiled marketing exercise than anything else. I would say this is due to the corporate goons watering everything down to be inoffensive and palatable for everyone while focusing the effort on what matters to them (marketing). This is just corporate culture in general, not a GW specific problem. GW's best IP will be the long established lore from before the sales team took the reins. And the problem for AoS is that it was created long after that time was over.

Spearhead, did appeal but the need for a 42 quid box means I have not touched it, reviews I value are too mixed to buy on a chance. Combat patrol was the only reason I looked at 10th, and I have brought 3 combat patrols. Now we are playing with the idea of 500 point games, no interest in large games of 40k but smaller games seem to work for us. More than kill team that we found, after getting past the old book, was pretty mediocre

It wouldn’t take much to be better than Combat Patrol. So imbalanced. I want Spearhead to be successful because it’s pretty much as deep as I want to get into anything.

I’m happy for game stores that more Spearhead boxes are moving. But Spearhead is barely a game at all and the reason so many people are playing it is because it is easy. But that won’t have legs. A game whose primary element of player agency is which pre-defined list you play is not going to sustain the game for 3 years. I like war games. I like interactive board games with lots of player agency. I don’t need catch-up mechanics to keep games artificially close and dull the impact of player skill. Spearhead and AoS4 have none of the qualities I value, so I’ve moved on. My FEC army will live in my display cabinet now, which makes me a little sad.

Come to the Old World and bask in it's fields of never ending list building. List building becomes a hobby in this world.
@aaronabel4756Ай бұрын
Grab a copy of Tony Bath's Ancient Wargaming and maybe a copy of Wargaming Campaigns by Henry Hyde. Warhammer can be adapted to actual campaigns and open up a whole new dimension of player agency.

I am a 3d printer away from playing TOW. I loved WHFB 7th and 8th. I only started playing AoS because I was sure that GW would not commit to TOW, but I’m happy to be wrong about that. I hadn’t heard of Ancient Wargaming. Just bought a digital copy. Thanks for the tip!
@mogwaiman6048Ай бұрын
Sure it can, people can buy more than one Spearhead and if they tire of Spearhead they can play 4th edition. Spearhead has been amazingly well done for what it is.
@Strange8ractorАй бұрын
We’ll see, but my bet is that Spearhead will have very little engagement in 6 months. We’ll be back to the same overly complex AoS battletome rules, but with less freedom in list building and more emphasis on the worst parts of 3rd edition (battle tactics, endless spells). All these people playing Spearhead because it is easier than full-blown AoS are still not going to play full-blown AoS. Having to drop $140 plus building and painting a new Spearhead in order to breathe a little bit of life into a watered-down board game is not going to be appealing to most people for very long. Unless it’s just an excuse to buy build and paint more stuff, then ok, but that also doesn’t support the idea that the game has longevity. If I search for “spearhead” on KZbin right now, there’s nothing more recent than a month old.
