I THOUGHT the Refurbished Steam Deck would be a great entry-point for buyers that want to save a few bucks. But I'm not sure I'm happy with the one I got...

I got mine on Monday and it looked like it was brand new and has worked perfectly. It would have been nice to see you go through the warranty process just to see if Valve took care of the issue for you. My only concern is that Valve could potentially be a little more stingy with warranty claims on the refurbished units

Not gonna lie, a lot of this was nitpicking. Does it play games, and does it work? I think that's a win for me. If the buttons didn't work, then that's what I would be concerned about.

I got a brand new 64GB Steam Deck on the recent Steam Summer Sale and it also had this same kind of light bleed in the top left corner. After some looking around I came to the same conclusion as you, a little flex and screw loosening drastically reduces the severity of the light bleed. I thought of sending it back to Valve but I also heard that they have stopped accepting RMAs for light bleed except on very severe cases. They say light bleed like this is normal and unavoidable with this type of screen but if it's really bad to the point where it hurts the experience they'll fix it.

The twisting is a feature not a defect! Something fun to do while you're playing a game!

As someone who use to calibrate video displays for years, I'm pretty forgiving about differences in display panel quality, but that light leak is nasty and that Steam Deck would go straight back to Valve. That's not refurbished, but what use to be called a "Scratch & Dent" model, as its sold with a known flaw.

I've been thinking about it and, although it's a bit expensive, I'm definitely going to get me a Steam Deck at some point. The emulation capabilities tied with the fact that I've been getting more and more into indie gaming over the past couple of years is pointing me into that direction. I know I could just play these game on my computer for no extra cost, but I actually am not a fan of playing games on my computer. I like to have separation of where I work and where I play.

glad you highlighted the backlight bleed issue. Ive messed with about 9-10 decks at this point (from my personal one and RMAs, to friends consoles, etc.) and every single one of them had very noticeable backlight bleed. people will defend Valve saying its common in IPS displays but ive never seen it so common and noticeable in any other device. Hopefully they improve their QA when it comes to screens for future decks/their next console.

The button issue you experienced during the initial update process: I had that happen when I upgraded my storage and reinstalled SteamOS. It was frustrating to say the least, so I think it's just a SteamOS issue.

I got mine 2 days ago. I immediately switched out the ssd to 2tb. I noticed that the foil covered screw under the shielding was pulled back, and one of the tiny screws was missing. Anyway, I loaded up the OS, and everything went smoothly. The whole process took maybe 15 minutes. Not bad for a refurbished 64gb steam deck!

The controller buttons not working at bootup is most likely due to the drivers for the controller not bieng loaded at boot. It is a computer after all. When you turn your pc on the first thing it does is load a boot manager and then it runs a startup list for inputs like a mouse and keyboard. Thats why the controls didn't work until after the system was fully booted.

The screen thing isn't an "issue". It just can happen with IPS displays because of uneven pressue. Twisting it a little wont hurt the deck and it's fine to open it up and loosen up the screws then tighten them in the X pattern.

I have exactly the same issue in the same spot with my non refurbished deck, just normal steam deck stuff, pretty much unnoticeable unless the screen is pretty much completely black for me, 350 is a fantastic price for such a capable device

This is a backlight bleed issue, it's fairly common in displays in general. I had an issue with my Lenovo T580 screen and it's just from pressure being put unevenly on the panel. Nothing to be too concerned about assuming you are able to fix it by relieving pressure. If not then I suggest warranty/return

i got my refurb steam deck earlier this week as well. took 4 days(2 of which was a weekend) from time of purchase to have it delivered in Canada. only issue i had was the same initial setup weirdness. i just let it sit for like 10 mins and it sorted itself out and rest of setup was breeze. also mine didnt have the screen issue that he talks about. for the price difference id recommend everyone get a refurb one if they are in stock.
