Also just clarifying quickly. "Why did the Office prank scare you and not nightmare house?" Because one was a well crafted slow burn horror experience I wasn't expecting. The other was a never ending trope filled cluster fuck that ticked about every horror cliche box it could and NEVER slowed down. That being said, just because I took the piss while playing it doesn't mean it was bad. Nightmare house is quite possibly the BEST horror mod of its time and more than achieved what it set out to do. Remember that this came out before the Slenderman youtuber craze that drove the creation of so many horror games afterwards; I swear a lot of them took inspiration from here. It's like the FNAF problem: when you look at the components, there's no reason the sequels should be less scary than the first; they're built very similarly. But that's the problem: we grew used to its tricks and it became less scary from our perspectives.

i think this is actually an interesting question; for example, both had mannequins but one was clearly WAY more effective. i'm not an expert at all and this is just by what i remember but i'll put my thoughts down anyway the (first 2) portal prank mods had no spoken dialogue whatsoever, and it relied entirely on the world (+a few paragraphs throughout, found on computers left vacant). you are COMPLETELY on your own. your expections are being toyed with (you expect them to appear behind you, but they don't. so you think they don't move, but then you arrive at a location you saw on the CCTV and they're gone). it is very clear something is wrong, but you have no idea what specifically is happening, this unknown keeps bothering you here, if you just know some basic horror tropes, you could probably predict every beat of the game (jolly did). you are also not alone, and there wasn't really any sort of looming, mysterious threat. i also found the dialogue to be cheesy (CrApPeD mY pAnTs), jolly's probably well used to HL2 stock sound effects, and it mostly seemed to rely on jumpscares

this one is much older so it doesn't have as good of spooks. maybe if it was played during it's release it would have been better. this mod doesn't age well.

Nightmare House 2 was made by WeCreateStuff, a small mod development team founded by Hen Mazolski/Matshulski, the guy who made Portal: The Flash Version Mappack, original Nightmare House mappack and it's remake. Underhell was made by Mxthe, who has nothing to do with any of these projects. I also wonder if he will ever work again on Underhell in any form or how is he doing in general, since even Day Of Infamy he seemed to be really excited to work on, pretty much stopped getting updates long ago.
