So I played ONE PIECE GRAND ADVENTURE For The First Time...

With the release of One Piece Odyssey and a recent One Piece movie, more and more newcomers are gravitating toward the series. I am one such newcomer and I'm upset that I'm so late to the party because One Piece (at least in its first 100 episodes) rules! To make up for lost time, I decided to dive into one of the original One Piece video games in celebration of the launch of One Piece Odyssey. What does this 3D Anime fighter get right and wrong? I set sail and find out.

This is what all the later entries missed: the fun and goofiness of the world. One Piece doesn't do your traditional fights; they get silly and wild with each escalation. Other characters fly in and out during battles.

Played this for the first time last year. I truly loved the campaigns and how you could level your characters how you wanted . Made for very fun Role Play to have zoro have max attack , Usopp have the best item skills, and luffy being a durable tank. It made me actually think about who to take into fights and made the game not as easy as it coulda been. Its all the presentation and fan service I love. Chopper having his walking sound effects is such a small and appreciated detail. A true hidden gem.

This was my first One Piece Game. I still have it! I grew up on the 4kids Dub. I started on this, this dub cast was the first dub cast I was introduced to. So this game will forever be nostalgic for me! Focus on it in portions. You can take breaks in between, but each major portion is more or less a good bulk to binge, and then take a break, I find. I played this on GameCube! I loved it. Nowadays I'm working my way through the anime too, and I'm almost up to episode 900! I think this game had a strong influence on my decision to watch the show all the way through, as it left such a good impression of One Piece in my mind...even better than the dubbed episodes I had watched up to that point. (And yeah, after watching so much of the subbed show, it's a little jarring to hear the 4Kids voices here, but I do find them kind of nostalgic in a way)

A bit of One Piece videogame history and trivia on Grand Adventure: It's one of two "only in America" games that 4Kids commissioned from Bandai. The cover of the game features an image of Luffy done for the PS2 only Japanese fighting game Fighting For One Piece. The islands of Grand Adventure go from Luffy's homeland all the way to Long Ring Long Land, but weirdly Long Ring Long Land's characters are absent from the game.

Zoro’s name change was actually a change done by Viz when they localized the manga to avoid getting sued by Zorro’s owners. It is still Zolo being used in the official English manga

I love Luffy because despite how powerful he is and despite how often everything comes down to him, he isn’t unassailable and doesn’t just ALWAYS pull out a new power up every time he fights an arc villain. Dude relys SO DAMN HEAVY on his crew which he should. He is a pirate and he has an actual crew. Secondly, everything he does, even the ones that are new forms TEND to be less of a power up and more a creative change to how he uses his powers and shows again that he earns everything he does.

The first 30 episodes at least are not even close to showing what makes this show great. It is like fans going crazy over the 12 episodes of Chainsaw Man saying it is the best thing when nothing in those 12 episodes really show the real Chainsaw Man experience. So saying in the first episodes of One Piece you fell in love with the series is a bit too much. But I am glad you like it, you are in for a ride.

so i'm 1 minuet into the video and I just wanted to say, as a One Piece fan who caught up a few years ago, I completely recommend taking you time on the series and not binging through it all like crazy. Enjoy the adventure. One Piece should be considered a marathon, not a race. You gotta pace yourself. There is allot to soak in, and some things that don't seem important at all right now will blind side you later if your rushing. Take breaks if you need to, and remember you can always come back to it later!

One game I would recommend especially if you this early in the series is One Piece Round the Land for the PS2. It's a 2D plattformer (or 2D and a half if you like) with 3D graphics and environments. It goes up to the end of Skypiea so it should be right up your alley if you've covered that ground. The game itself is a lot of fun and actually is the first to implement the mechanics you described in your Odyssey review. I'm talking about some paths being blocked off until you come back with a different character. For me personally this is by far my favorite One Piece game as it is just so much fun and you can tell it was done not as a cash crab but by someone loving the series. Sure it might be dated by todays standards but I think that someone like you, who appreciates retro games, will totally get some enjoyment out of it. I don't know if it was released in the states though as I played the European version we had there. Also another game I liked is Pirates Carnival for the PS2. It's pretty much Mario Party in a One Piece setting, where they actually managed to the vast majority of minigames something that actually happened in the series, which is an amazing feat if you ask me. However that one was get's the credit it deserves and I don't know why. If you ever get your hand on it, I'd like to hear your take on it. To this day I don't get why people say that this game fails as a party game.

@@wonder-games3579 I just had to look it up as I only earn the German and Japanese versions but it turns out you're right, there was never a release with English text. I would still say go for it if you have a PS2 that would play games that are not your region. The PS2 era One Piece games focus more on the fun of letting you control your favorite characters in iconic locations rather than the modern games that don't really know what to do with the IP. The story in Round the Land is really miniscule. Basically the Strawhats land on a party island, where they can run around and collect treasure (and balloons) to get the big treasure at the end. There's no complex reason why they encounter their old adversaries on places that are a not to classic locations. It just happens. And it's a crapton of fun. The only downside is that you would perhaps miss out on unique conversations. Like if your main is Chopper and you start the Buggy boss battle both Chopper and Buggy will comment on each others noses which is a spicy subject for both of them.

Not sure if anyone answered this for you, but the reason you hear Dragon Ball actors in One Piece is funimation is based out of Dallas, at the time actors had to be local or at least able to come to Dallas to record. This isn’t the case now, but thats why so many of Funimation licensed anime had the same actors.

Man! this is a nostalgia trip for me. I played this game when so I was so young and still not good in English (English is not my first language.) I remember that I found some kind of exploit when I played as Ace that let me 1 shot opponent. IIRC, if you use 1 his super attack that he makes a fire wall that expands and push outward very near the opponent, the opponent will take full damage of condensed fire wall. Letting you win easily.

Don't worry Matty it's not just you with the 4kids voices. A lot of them aren't very good, but I personally blame their direction, and watered down script. Because 4kids did have good voice actors. I think if Marc Diraison (Zoro) was kept on, he could have been better than Chris Sabat. He's actually the most Iconic English voice for Guts (Berserk), and is honestly the best for Guts. He's really the big stand out of all the 4kids voices for One Piece. Chris Sabat is still amazing as Zoro, it's just a little what if I think about sometimes. I'm glad to hear some praise for their English dub at all really. Because it's honestly great. Also just enjoy the ride of One Piece. It's what makes the series great, not the end goal.

One of the best OP game ever. Gameplay is absurd for a Fighter game, the arenas are interactive, good movepool for the characters and nice combos and interactions with the sorroundings. The only downside is the absence of Wiper, Aokiji and Foxy (there were only available in a Japanese version)

I'd love if you can review the old "Unlimited Adventure/Cruise/Red" One Piece games on the Wii and PS3. They still have what I consider to be the most original setting and story in all of its games, it's so cool, Oda did a fantastic job with the story of this one, and how you can play with all the strawhats and explore multiple regions, collecting materials for tools to create and enhance , while making sure the Thousand Sunny is expanding and unlocking more options to use was really neat and added a lot of life to it. I still view them as my favorite One Piece games ever. Odyssey looks like it's gonna really good, so I'm excited for that as well.

fun story about this game i bought it when i was a kid from gamestop for the gamecube. the gamestop guy put grand battle in the case tho i ended up noticing a few days later told my grandpa and we took it back and got the grand adventure game. the reason i noticed was because on the back of the case it shows you racing the chickens and a few other characters that aren't in grand battle and i was like how do i unlock this stuff because grand battle was a relatively short game.

Please don't play One Piece Odyssey. It won't spoil super major plotpoints but a lot of stuff in it is stuff that gets a nice and very hype reveal in the anime and knowing about it from the games will take away from the moment it gets shown in the anime. To not spoil but to try to give an example, Luffy's moveset. At this point it's already all well known so they show it in the game, but in the anime each of his new moves are very hype reveals that would be lessened for you and I don't want that to happen.

When you get far enough One Piece pirate warriors 3 is really good at having you fight nameless baddies until you get to the main fight while still keeping it fun. Every time you get to the big bad it feels like a huge deal. :)

14:45 Mortal Kombat: Konquest Mode Started with Deadly Alliance and ended with Armageddon I believe. I remember playing as Shujinko in Deception extremely vividly, as Master Bo Rai cho was a Trip. His quests were difficult as hell, because he had you pulling off specific combo strings just to progress. I also remember my sister using Mileena, and spamming her Axel Kick because it was Busted as hell.

You are correct. Deception had the best version of conquest mode IMO where you played as shujinko. I thought it was cool how he aged more and more as you got through it and how you would encounter all kinds of different MK characters along the way. I liked Armageddons conquest mode too just not as much as deception

My friend got into it in weird way he watched the episodes of east blue special cover the first four of the crew, then jumped to drum kingdom then watched movie 8 the slimmed down version of alabasta, so he was able to get to sky island alot faster

Hear me out.. i can’t dislike the 4kids dub. As a plus, thanks for giving the series a chance XD. Yeah it’s baffling with the huge amount of episodes, but most should give it a chance
