As an Ireland fan I watched this game and left feeling unimpressed and that Ireland had played very badly. This video has completely blown that perspective open through incredible analysis. Now I have even more respect for the ABs coming to Dublin and beating us. I even enjoyed the game in retrospect after watching this. Incredible, genuinely peerless commentary from Squidge as per usual. No other analyist in any sport is this good.

a lot of our attempts at "defending" ended up with penalties to the ABs though, I definitely wouldn't say it was our strong suit. Our kicking game was as good as it's been in a while, that's all I saw in it.

With the amount of procession afforded to the AB’s (63% first half, don’t know second half figure, but it felt like the same) you could as an AB support only happy with the result not so much the performance against an Ireland creaking in every facet of their game. Squidge does sell this well but it’s still not a game I’ll ever rewatch. I love or have loved both teams but nobody can honestly say that they didn’t expect more from that matchup from both.

The Ireland win was a cold, mid-winter Christchurch kind of win from Razor and the boys. Nothing especially flashy but good enough. As a Kiwi I'm interested to see how the France game goes and what exactly a Scott Robertson AB's looks like, because right now we're winning by being able to play any style of rugby. France next week will be a big tester to see that.

I agree with you, I think Razor is a great coach, and I believe that he is busy teaching New Zealand how to win ugly again. The ABs have always been able to find a way to win those tight, scrappy games, despite also having the teeth to absolutely smash opposition teams (57-0 still gives me the sorts of nightmares Jordy Barrett now has of PSDT). Razor is a clever guy, and a great coach. As a Rugby fan, it's great to see New Zealand won against a good Irish side who didn't play badly, they just weren't allowed to play well. Thanks again, Squidgy, for flying the Rugby flag as high as you do!

Totally agree with your comment. NZ lost the ability to 'win ugly' over the last few years. It's great to win with style but winning ugly will do good enough. They were struggling to win but doing enough to find a way.

@Squidge It astounds me that you haven't been snapped up or at least put on a fat consultant wage by some big rugby broadcaster. Excellent analysis. Most of the "professional" pundits just got lazy and said Ireland were rusty and played like school boys. You on the other hand do the hard work, dig in, and do proper analysis to reveal Ireland played as well as they were allowed to play. And the All Blacks, too, playing an error-prone game due to Irish pressure. I hope all those professionals see this video and learn to look deeper and not just spit out word salad based on emotion. I've been so annoyed with many of them and other rugby YT'ers calling the game uninspired and messy. As you've rightly pointed out it was a master class by NZ on how to undo Ireland and all done under some tough handling conditions with the rain. Top notch rugby that was excellently detailed by an exceptional analyst in yourself. Very well done!

It’s mental and physical. The all blacks have figured out Ireland, that’s why Ireland look out of sorts. It wasn’t the crowd, it wasn’t that they were undercooked, it wasn’t a bad day at the office they were outplayed. Champions don’t make excuses. This is why we don’t respect you. Very Springbok-like ganeplan from NZ and frankly Im not surprised. During the World Cup, Ireland beat the Boks in a great game, but the Boks had a really poor kicking radar that day. Very interesting to note is that the Boks also limited Ireland to 13 points. While the Boks lost, certainly other teams would have sat up and looked at how the Boks stifled the Irish. It is quite clear that the way to beat this rather fantastic Irish side is to not allow them to score that initial cut and to frustrate them whenever they get even a whiff of the ball. Big difference between the two matches however, is that New Zealand did not suffer from malfunctioning kicker syndrome. Homework for the Irish is firstly to admit that this type of game is not their strong suit. Secondly, it is to come up with something to counteract this game plan, because this is something that can outdo them. SA and NZ have employed this gameplan. England have the players to do it too. So can Argentina. Get on this, Farrell.

Squidge, an idea for a video, at the end of the 2024 season it would be great if you would do a video on how exactly the Springbok attack has evolved over the year. Eg structures or tactics they tried and kept or abandoned, what they're trying to do, etc. It's easy to see there's a change, but studying the transition would be enlightening. Thanks

Thank you! It’s exciting times for New Zealand rugby, and Robertson’s approach really does feel like a breath of fresh air. His success with the Crusaders has shown that he knows how to build a team capable of switching styles fluidly based on the game’s demands. It’s impressive how he’s embedding a game plan that lets New Zealand handle different conditions and play styles - from structured, physical play to expansive, fast rugby - and adapt on the fly. That flexibility, or malleability, is the real strength, and it’s something New Zealand rugby has been edging toward for years but seems to be on the brink of mastering now under Robertson. The focus on situational adaptability combined with unleashing classic All Black dynamism when the moment’s right is a blend that will make them incredibly hard to predict and play against. It feels like we’re seeing the evolution of the “black DNA” as they refine the fast, pressure-heavy style that other teams find so difficult to defend. Over the next few years, if they keep building this adaptability and bring younger players into this style, the potential for a new All Black dynasty is very real. It’ll be fascinating to watch!

Clarke didn't skewer it, it hit Hansen's hand! Was a hilarious call though, either it hit Hansen's hand and was an NZ throw, or it was out on the full and should have been brought all the way back for the Irish lineout just outside the 22. But the ref did half of both, and gave Ireland the throw but downfield.

You can’t call 38 tests, 5 wins, and a draw a rivalry. In Ireland’s eyes, they might see it that way, but for New Zealand, not so much. Good on Ireland for how far they’ve come recently-they’ve certainly made themselves a team to respect. But SA vs NZ? Now that's a rivalry. It takes years to build that kind of history. A true rivalry isn’t just about recent success; it's the years, the history, and the back-and-forth battles. South Africa and New Zealand have that long, storied past filled with hard-fought matches, heartbreak, and unforgettable moments. Ireland may be working toward that status, but it’s a different league when it comes to the All Blacks and the Springboks.

said it after the match. Irelands defence was amazing. DMac stood tall. very smart play. A less pedantic ref might thave only given 8 penalties against the Irish instead of 13. lovely work on Ringrose positioning. I was so pissed off Osborne/Frawley didn't start. They need to have 20 games against Boks / AB's before the next WC. Keenan made his sevens choice and Farrell doesn't stay loyal to Osborne is head scratching.

Ireland shut NZ down completely... except for the 13 penalties they gifted them, 6 of which McKenzie turned into points. That was the winning and losing of the game. Foster called Ireland's attack cut and paste, and the only evolution we've seen since then has been backwards. This NZ team still have tonnes of room for improvement, a frightening prospect for the rest of us.

ABs 5 penalties over 80 minutes is insane, especially if you consider the ABs discipline over the last few years. That's a real shift in attitude that if they'd had earlier may have won them a game in SA and maybe not coughed up the loss against Argentina. If they keep at it with the discipline they're going to be a tough nut to crack.

In most aspects of life there is some recency bias and rugby is no different. Ireland was riding high after beating South Africa away their last game and New Zealand having a below par Rugby Championship by their standards. While each side played well, it felt as though Ireland was trying to force their game a bit. The line-out continued to be an issue and it felt like watching the QF all over again. As a fan it was a little stutter start with all of the handling errors from Ireland and kept the game from getting into much of a flow, I think if anywhere that is where some rust was demonstrated. Credit to the ABs, they were able to win the arm wrestle and content kicking over three pointers (did not know McKenzie could kick like that) until their try scoring moment came.

Great analysis, but I have to Say, watching the ABs playing the Mccaw style "on the edge of legal" rugby is nothing new, the incident by the Scrum half at 7.28 epitomises this - had Ireland won a penalty there , as should have been awarded then the game could have taken a different direction as Ireland could have scored from either a penalty kick or a set piece 5m lineout , As you know , these games are all about momentum- mind you , we will take our beating and hopefully learn from this- All in all though it was a frustrating game to watch , a lot of untypical errors from rusty Ireland- ABs have had a few games under their belts and looked good on the day. We'll be back 🙂

Mate, the ABs still havent finished enacting revenge for the series loss and especially the comments to Sam Cane, even after the WC and now this match, and they wont be for a while. Not until they've given them a proper hiding at home which will come under Razor.

@ to the casual fan it seems like it was an off game. But what really happened is the ABs exposed Ireland. Defensively you rely on a negative tactic to slow teams down and offensively you are one dimensional. Your players are not rugby players they are system players. More akin to a robot. Once you take away plan A you don’t have the players to adjust. Your coach even said this during the week. Other point is your team is old they’ve all missed a step which happens to every player. I’ve watched rugby all my life I’ve seen teams come and go. Ireland are on the decline. Revisit this post in a year and you’ll see what I mean.

It's a game that's played at a frenetic pace and teams must be able to react instinctively to the shapes before them, to be caught with such a wide space and with so many opposition players in it, is a junior rugby issue. There is a lack of awareness and communication in the Irish team that that wasn't spotted much earlier and closed down. It's a simple fix that won't happen this week. Unforced errors? Either poor concentration or concentrating on the wrong thing - gotta stay in the moment!

So good - top class analysis! I’ve grown weary of pundits bleating about Ireland being off their game, while not highlighting that they were done up like a kipper by the All Blacks. This is what Scott Robertson used to do at the Crusaders - a different game plan each week tailored for the opposition - executed very well - not uncommon to dominate opponents. The crowd at the Aviva knew it - they weren’t booing Ireland - they were silent for large parts of the match.
