what's funny is that it was originally supposed to be a documentary about them sending men into the women's leagues to show how "ridiculous" it is to allow trans women to compete, but when they tried to make the basketball team they were told that the players had to go through 3 years of hormone therapy to be allowed to compete. the premise then completely fell away, because they continued to try and make the team but they couldn't find any men willing to go through 3 years of life changing therapy just to play basketball. So they made Lady Ballers, a movie proving a point that conservatives made up.

@SeasideDetective27 ай бұрын
I haven't seen it, but from watching the trailer and a number of online reviews about it, I'm confused about exactly what it's preaching. Most obviously, it tells the story from the point of view of the antagonists, who of course tend to be the villains in a conventional story. You can do that, but then you risk making evil characters look sympathetic. To be sure, the movie makes fun of them, but it also lets us understand their reasons for what they're doing. Even more confusing is the fact that the "heroic" female athletes are also the butt of jokes, getting humiliated in slapstick scenarios against the supposedly superior antagonists. You can have your protagonists suffer and even fail, but ultimately they need to prevail or the story is a tragedy. So, what exactly is the attitude of LADY BALLERS? Is it socially conservative because it's anti-trans people in women's sports and doesn't present women as sexual objects, or is it socially liberal in that it doesn't condescend to women by assuming they're too weak to suffer physical comedy and (again) doesn't present women as sexual objects? (Feminism goes in both directions, you know.) If this is supposed to be a "political" movie, it's a failure.

A big reason for that was due to zero mildly conservative actors having the balls to take any of the parts so they used the DW+ staff.

Reviews like this are why the Drinker is the GOAT. He's made multiple videos with Ben Shapiro and has been extremely critical of woke Hollywood movies, and yet, rather than turning into a shill and saying the whole thing was amazing, he gave an honest review of this film as if he didn't have a horse in the race at all.
@Dennis-ml9hv7 ай бұрын
I think he still treated this review with kid gloves. If a movie has a hamfisted left wing message in one scene it never gets a pass. But this two hour long strawmen of a movie gets some light criticism.
@freedomextremist72157 ай бұрын
@@Dennis-ml9hv That's because the movie wasn't marketed as something else. Only a retard would go into a movie marketed as X and then complain about the movie being filled with X. That goes for anything.

I recall a comment from Chris Wallace, saying that being fair shouldn't be considered exceptional in journalism, it should just be standard. Drinker has his own reputation to uphold, and he at least had the sense to see that South Park criticized both left and right-wing narratives on the state of the US film industry.

@@takatamiyagawa5688 Critical Drinker is miles better than most of "ant-sjw youtubers". Which is why I can at least watch some of his videos. He doesnt use idiotic thumbnails and doesnt jump on any minor controversy like most of his contemperaries. But his bias really shines through here.

I guess the Daily Wire will stop complaining about politics in movies now, because they put politics in their own movies.

I appreciate the honest critique here and not simply glad handing the daily wire because of recent collaborations together. I like what they're trying to do with an alternate and parallel economy but for that model to work it does need to be judged by the same metrics and I think they will probably try to improve based on that

Thank you for reviewing the movie, Drinker. My wife and I watched it this weekend. It's pretty good. Better and funnier than I expected. Especially for a movie with a cast full of a lot of non-actors. My biggest problem with it was the pacing. A tighter 90-minute edit would go a long way.

1:41 A point on this scene: in collegiate wrestling you cannot throw your opponent to the mat. This is a disqualifying move which will result in a loss of the match and ejection for at least the tournament. You can pick up your opponent, but then you have to deliver them back to the mat. And if you’ve seen it, it’s really kuel.

In fairness to the DW, the script was written in 2 weeks, they had to act in it themselves (and none of them are actors) because no one else would do it, and it is their first comedy. I thought Michael Knowles's character was hilarious and Matt Walsh's character was so opposite to who he is in real life it cracked me up. C+/B- comedy. Good for a first attempt.

You really should have been harder on it. The acting is garbage, it’s boring and the comedy is for anyone with the sense of humor of a child stuck the 2000s. On top of that, this film was never going to be a good idea because the ideology backing it is so backwards. They couldnt even get their actors on to real teams like they wanted because in reality being trans in sports is really hard and takes sacrifices they couldn’t even take for the purpose of making their comedy and much less of making their failed documentary on the same subject.

I imagine part of the struggle with making a movie like this without the echo chamber component, is that you'll be hard pressed to find anyone willing to risk their careers that is in any way exposed to main stream cancellation. Even really fun people that probably agree that cancel culture is stifling risk a lot by even gently criticizing transgender people.

This movie IS culture war. I hate when a movie like this gets advertised as “non political” when all it really means is that it’s not “the other guys political.” This movie is political start to finish, and you let them off waaaaay too easy for giving more weight to “THE MESSAGE” than actually being funny. Might show some underlying bias from the reviewer.
