Marilyn Manson tends to waft around that post-industrial/“shock rock” end of the rock music genre spectrum. Nine Inch Nails was a good comparison, considering Trent was the one who “discovered” MM. Lol

Interestingly enough, that’s how Marilyn Manson and the band’s members came up with their names, a “beautiful people” celebrity paired with a vile, killer type: Marilyn Monroe + Charles Manson = Marilyn Manson, (other members from the era of the band: Twiggy Ramirez, Daisy Berkowitz, Ginger Fish, & Madonna Wayne Gacy.) So, the killer comparison is quite apt. So, Marilyn Manson isn’t any kind of -core. But, to Lex’s question, I will just point out that at the time of that album’s release Marilyn Manson opened for Nine Inch Nails as they toured on The Downward Spiral. Anyway, if you want to check out another original/cover pairing, “I Put A Spell On You,” is also on this album, and the original is by one of the most incredible performers in American history, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.
@katayfa

Huge MM fan! Saw him back in 94 with the spooky kids, and then a year later when he went on tour with Nine Inch Nails for the Self Destruct Tour. One of the best concerts I've seen to date. Manson is normally classified under the Industrial Umbrella (kinda), sometimes Rock, but I wouldn't really put him under either. He's his own special blend of talent that's hard to define. For Halloween, you should check out SKYND Feat Bill $aber - 'Columbine'. The singer is on a whole new level and her videos are amazingly accurate.

I can't believe that you didn't do Nine Inch Nails this stream. Trent is the one that made MM "Portrait of an American Family" a great album. I have seen MM in small clubs in '94 then Trent took him out of his trailer in FL to tour clubs then arenas around the country that year. I even won the costume contest on Halloween at the MM show in '96 as track 15 on his "Smells Like Children" EP. Got to hang out with the band and had them all sign my dope bag. It wasn't until he did The Night of Nothing that was an event for Trent Reznor and his label that was b4 MM 2nd album release and the place was packed with talent. Dr Dre to Anthony Kiedis were there bc it was the night after the VMAs in NYC and only 200 fans were allowed in. I was into MM and excited to hear new songs from his Antichrist album but he took the stage and he sounded like trash so he went to his usual bag of tricks and blamed the drummer. He flung the mic stand at him and split his head open then walked off stage. I thought it was part of the show until the drummer sprawled out over the kit and the ambulance came. It was a really big let down and I didn't feel the same about MM after that show. I had great times with them but it was the straw... Nine Inch Nails took the stage after and invited members of 'Prick' then 'PWEI' for songs of theirs and Richard Patrick joined for a culmination of "Head Like a Hole" with everyone on stage, minus MM. That started a Rift between the two and it was definitely apparent in his sound with out Trent's production. You have to hear "Reptile" or "Eraser" from NIN for dark or "The Becoming" or "Somewhat Damaged" for lighter.

Really not sure how to classify MM, it's definitely not Goth but it does use aspects of that, along with Industrial but it's still metal.

Manson's vocals on this are genius. Never cared for the band or goth in general, but this song is great. FYI this is goth music. Pure 90s.

Y'all are fast becoming my fave channel. While I might not always agree with Brad I understand where he's coming from and I respect the hell out of him. Lex seems to have this inner sense of rock nuances and that's very cool. Manson was shock rock\industrial rock. He was notoriously blamed for the Columbine School massacre that had nothing to do with him.

Birthday Massacre, "In the Dark." Never would have ever heard of this song, or even the band, if a local guy who runs an indy wrestling promo didn't use it as his entrance theme. I think it would be a good "spooky season" song/video to check out. Hard rock, semi-metal-ish, and female-fronted. I think you might like it. The official video can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opPbdIyvrNCWidE

If this is icky to ya, watch the official video... even on your own time. Its awesomely disturbing Manson makes great covers in there own twisted versions but still great. Even my father who was in his 60s liked Manson Covers. Tainted Love, Sweet Dreams, Highway to Hell and Put a Spell on you are great starts

My thoughts on MM doing this cover was expressing some sort of inner pain/anger. Someone did something to him in his younger days (prior to fame).

I thought I heard he also doing something to a woman to abuse her when in relationship. “He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years. I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission. I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail. I am here to expose this dangerous man and call out the many industries that have enabled him, before he ruins any more lives. I stand with the many victims who will no longer be silent.” In a show of solidarity, at least four other women posted their own allegations against Manson, detailing harrowing experiences that they claim included sexual assault, psychological abuse, and/or various forms of coercion, violence, and intimidation. "

You asked about black metal on your stream. You could check out "Immortal- All Shall Fall." It's not really my cup of tea but you can tell it was an influence on deathcore. The difference is in Deathcore the evil and darkness is kind of a metaphor bit in black metal they're serious. And the vocals always sound like they're recorded on an old tape recorder.

manson is probably closer to industrial rock in general. skipping the music video for manson is like cake with no icing. you're skipping over an enhancing component to the manson's songs - the visuals.
