Yes, the debate-style zero-sum framework we're all addicted to makes everything flat and reductive. It's seductive though: 3 dimensional thinking isn't instinctual, takes effort, and isn't as fun as just picking a side and letting confirmation bias take it from there.

A s2 can now focus on just Osha and Qimir doing darkside stuff would be sublime, Vern trying to find out about how her apprentice is still alive causing trouble is a fine angle as well as Darth P in the mix. @@Crocthunder yea can't have too many close calls tbh. Vernestra goes on a wild goose chase but theres never any evidence to back her up. Maybe she's so obsessed w finding him, starts to believe "the Sith" have returned, the other Jedi start to think she's kinda losing it. Shes removed from positions of authority. Probably doesnt end well, or maybe she just decides to drop the whole thing. Qimir and Osha don't even know she's looking for them. Hego Damask finds out theyve beem raising alarms, happens to meet a young student named palpatine, decides qimir and osha have outlived their usefulness and have become liabilities. Sets up a season 3? Idk man

Honestly Sol is such an interesting character, he is the embodiment of "one could do wrong things even with good intentions." Him not trusting the witches, not stoping Tolbin from barging into the fortress, killing the head witch, choosing Osha over Mae out of personal reasons and letting Mae fall, and lying about it throughout her whole life, all of it was done under the belief that he was protecting Osha, who he thought was going to be scrificed for her sister's accension, but ended up breaking her whole life. And the fact that all this actions driven by the "noble intentions" of the Jedi, ties in to the point of the whole "the acolyte kills without a weapon, and the acolyte kills the dream." and it is quite interesting. Osha, in the most personal level, has now become the antithesis of what the Jedi stands for. She is now the living proof that the Jedi's belief could completely destroy a life of a thoroughly innocent person. And that action has now caused the Jedi order (or Vernestra) to cover up the truth, lying to the face of the government officials, creating a moral weakness in the order that in one day would be exploited by Palpatine. I'm very intersted to see where the story would go the next season!
@markuhler2664
@markuhler2664 Ай бұрын
While I could agree with a lot you say I think it falls apart if you take into account that Sol, as much as I connected with him, is a lousy Jedi. You wrote that the Jedi's beliefs completely destroyed the life of an innocent person. However had Sol maintained control over his emotions, as a Jedi should, the disaster that occurred on Bendock would not have happened. Further, even taking into his lapses, he and the Jedi really did nothing wrong. At every confrontation the Jedi did not attack but rather reacted and tried to deescalate the tensions.

@@markuhler2664 You lost me on the 'Jedi did nothing wrong' when it's clear in EP7 that Sol and Torbin did go against the Council order. Sol bears responsibility here as he went against Master Indara orders.
@EACru2002
@EACru2002 Ай бұрын
I mean without trying to get too "real world" with it, the obvious metaphor here is Sol is the overeager Christian missionary, goes to some underdeveloped part of the world, and believes in his heart of hearts with the "noblest" intentions that he's saving these children by taking them. Again, not trying to be too real world and piss people off, and I'm not saying this analogy is 100% one to one or accurate or fair, it's not, but as a rough analogy, that's what they were clearly going for. And so everything you can say about Sol, both positive and negative is the same you could say for that individual. Do I believe that Sol genuinely and with complete good intentions believe he's doing the right thing? Yes. And so do a lot of those people that I mentioned in my analogy. But where does that come from? Maybe it comes from the doctrine from the institutions these people follow and maybe that's the issue? I'm not here trying to answer that question, but I'm saying this show is clearly probing that question. In a sense, if Qui Gon is the John the Baptist to Anakin's Space Jesus, then Sol is, "What if that hero complex gets out of control?"
@Cyfiero
@Cyfiero Ай бұрын
By your logic, Sol choosing Mae over Osha and letting Osha fall would be just as inexcusable. There was no winning for him in that specific dilemma because he was physically unable to save both. When he _had_ to make a choice or let both of them die, it is natural that he would choose the one who was supportive of the Jedi over the one who started the fire then locked the Jedi inside the fort to help Koril kill them. Sol really catalyzed the whole disaster with his odd obsession over Osha, but what we were shown in the penultimate episode is that it was not one-sided. Multiple actors all around contributed to the tragedy in their own way. Mae _did_ sadistically threaten to kill her sister then set the fire that would destroy her entire home. Torbin randomly rushed back to the Coven in his impatience to finish the investigation and go home. Koril had Mae lock Sol and Torbin inside so she can kill them. The Jedi didn't set out to massacre the Coven at any time, but Indara breaking their possession of Kelnacca somehow either killed them or knocked them unconscious for Mae's fire to kill them all. Finally Sol accidentally killed Anesaya because she transformed into a smoke demon right next to him while simultaneously dissipating Mae, and it was reasonable for him to mistake this for an attack. The Jedi also did not withhold the full truth Osha for malicious reasons. Indara genuinely believed that Mae starting the fire, destroying her home, and killing all the other witches, Koril included, was the technical truth. Sol also believed that. The truth they withheld from Osha was Sol's hand in killing Anesaya, which Indara had insisted would be to shield Osha from further trauma. We were shown how a series of misunderstandings, miscommunication, and foolish errors by all parties resulted in the terrible tragedy, and yet the final episode homes in on a single Jedi's single mistake and hammers it again and again as the only detail that matters. That's the culmination of the perspectivism the show seemed to champion at first. It is true that Sol is an interesting character, but the final episode ends up using him as a strawman for a polemic against the Jedi by ignoring all the nuances they had established or Mae's own established guilt in destroying her home.

@@EACru2002it also calls back to the conversation between the senator and Vernestra ep.8. The Jedi don’t see themselves as normal citizens and above others, its like the “white savior” complex where they think these kids need to be in “modernized” communities but at the end of the day, where their from is their identity. Taking kids from their homes under the guise of helping them, harms them in a way as well like you said.

My biggest criticism for the show (which I overall enjoyed but was significantly dissapointed by at points) is that it should not have been 8 episodes. It shoulf have either had more run time to cook its themes and events longer, or it could have been cut down to be shorter with better pacing. 8 episodes was the wrong length for this show, and insisting every show be 6-8 episode "extended movies" is really hurting a lot of Disney+ shows.

I feel like this show had a lot of potential actually and some brilliant moments. However, it suffered greatly from bad editing and some really poor writing choices that screamed “last minute re-write” or “we let too large of a committee write this and let the editors cut out scenes that hurt the storytelling.” No matter how many highs a series has, a handful of really major writing failures is going to kill it; it’s like being served a really tasty meal with a couple of flies in it. The inconsistencies with acting feels like a consequence of rushed schedules or last minute changes/re-shoots where there wasn’t time for proper direction. The last few projects all felt this way to me to varying degrees. I’m not sure what’s driving it but it needs to be corrected for sure if this franchise is going to survive.

I gave you a thumbs up and share your sentiments. Not every actor can be Leonardo DiCaprio, Christina Ricci, or River Phoenix when they’re young, but most can grow as performers if they apply themselves and work to improve. Likewise, there are only a few directors known for their ability to draw great performances from children - Spielberg comes to mind. p.s. I do think it worth mentioning that use of the term “actress” has become quite controversial. While awards like the Oscars are still bestowed with gendered titles, most female actors have come to take umbrage with “actress” and point out that both within their profession and the broader career landscape, feminizing modifications of job titles originated through derogation or special allowances, not equality or respect. Many of the leading women in film (Sigourney Weaver, Meryl Streep, many others) advocate strongly for “actor”. So though I myself had to make some effort to adopt the change, “actor” applies to everyone regardless of their sex (acting awards presently abstaining). Of course, it’s optional, but if it matters to you, there it is.

It did a lot of unnecessary exposition that were just bad attempts at character building. Overall though it was entertaining. The fights were well done and actually added to the story. If there is a second season, I'd like to see a time jump of a few years to see how all the plot threads left open have developed. Exploring the Jedi's role in their own downfall is a great storytelling opportunity that I hope better developed in the future. But that's what all fans want, right?

Ok, I don't see why we want to see MORE exposition on the fall of the Jedi? Didn't we already see that in the prequel trilogy, it seems when covered that ground in the prequel trilogy showing how the Jedi had become bloated, corrupt and fallen from their ideals (and it's expanded upon in the CW). Wasn't the point of the Acolyte to show us 100 years prior with the events of the prequel Jedi, ala before they were corrupt and fallen? And yet what we got was a rehash that they were no more different than their counterparts down the line, so what was the point? But the apparent kindness of Qimir could be his undoing in the next season. Is Darth Plagueis really into them having a relationship? She isn't an evil character, she never was, she thought of the jedi as the evil plague on the galaxy almost like legends General Grevious before he became the cyborg droid general. After first watchthrough blind, yeah it seems Mae's acting is poor but whenever I rewatch it it's like an ironic addition to the character.

Finished the last episode of Acolyte and... oh boy, the writing was so bad. So many things made absolutely no sense. 2 episodes ago Sol told Mae they had to talk, then we have the flashback episode, the expectation is that this was Sol telling his story but when the finale starts it's clear they haven't talked at all yet. Then later the fuzzy guy sabotages the ship while chasing Mae... why? He knew it wasn't Osha, he knew before Sol! Then later Mae wants to bring Sol to justice? When did she give up her quest for revenge? Then later Mae stays behind to be captured... why? She's finally with her sister, the one thing she wanted above all else! And Osha doesn't want to let Mae go, when all she ever wanted was to be her own person without a clingy sister around all the time. In the flashback we learned Sol killed their mother because she was turning into a big scary shadow thing, a perfectly rational choice at the time! How was he supposed to know she intended to let Osha go? Why didn't she just say something? Who approved these scripts? At least it wasn't as bad as Rise of Skywalker.

Sols ending was deep, his death became a twist in the same manner he had used Mae’s perceived death and he died having a broken lie that broke him and in his last words he accepted death by Osha. I feel the mother was to Osha among the cult was Sol was to Osha among the Jedi. That’s why she attacked Sol he placed her in an unnecessary position losing one of her lights. Sol was her light but that sun burned her and snuffed out her mom’s light. The issue is they didn’t really show enough to give the weight of the mother to Osha they only showed that weight with Mae. So people miss why Osha would kill Sol. But it’s not much different why Anakin wanted to kill Obi Wan. The cult wasn’t family to Osha but the mom and Mae were now seeing Sol’s part she feel misplaced hate was with Mae who took her family and she can’t process that when Sol keeps talking, he only fuels the hate.

I appreciate that you kept civil during your entire discussion over the past few weeks when talking about this show. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and lesson that acolyte tried to teach, even if I feel like they botched it in the end attempting to secure another season, with the plagueis jumpscare and the plot essentially starting from scratch again. It was a show about an era that we've never seen before, about challenges that only were hinted at in the prequels but most fans didn't seem to get because the films were unwatchable from a directing perspective, and I do appreciate that this film tried to explore that again. I'm interested in a season 2 but I can't think of a way it could be extended to another 8 episodes because the cliffhangers we got feel like they could get resolved in 1 or 2 episodes each... feels like the show is in a very weird spot now.

This is just a guess, but I suspect there might be some changes coming at Disney regarding who is in charge of the Star Wars properties. There have been too many underwhelming shows and movies in that portfolio and Disney's bosses and shareholders are going to get fed up with the team delivering so few hits that drive subscriptions or box office for such a valuable property. I suspect that series that aren't driving new subscriptions in large numbers or showing as the reason that people are retaining their subscriptions will be getting the ax and there will be some shakeups at Disney - Star Wars. This show probably won't get a second season. If it does, it likely will be a much lower budget.

Greatest thing about this show was finding this channel. I mean this show is not perfect by any means, but the amount of hate some of the Star Wars tubers were giving towards this show and its creators was just so out of hand and toxic, that I stopped following most of those channels. It is okay if someone doesn't like this show and wants to criticize it, but the hate was just getting so out of hand, all that review bombing before even seeing the episodes, deliberate misunderstanding of things and criticizing plot holes before things are even explained etc was just so tiring to see. And some people even attack those that like this show which is just ridiculous. To me I'd say this was like solid 6.5/10 series, it was not perfect, but I was entertained. Like in most of Star Wars there was plenty of bad dialogue, some things were pretty rushed, some directional decisions weren't really spot on. But there were few really good characters, action scenes were really spot on and this brought some new lore, also even though we only see him for a few seconds, it was awesome to finally see that one legendary big bad Muun creeping around. ;) And we kinda finally got current canon confirmation of his existence, before this we only got that one scene of palps talking about him. But yeah, after finding this channel I have viewed plenty of your videos and I really like your style. Keep up the good work!

Is it worth a watch? Not really. Watched through it in its entirety with my wife. I love Star Wars and my wife, who just saw the movies. Both of us agree is that the story is poorly written with not very great acting. I don't care if someone likes it, but certainly I would not recommend anyone waste their time. I had held out hope that the story would fit together by the end, but it never really does. While also agree that Mae/Osha was not greatly acted I would also add that the character was quite poorly written with little to no growth, instead just flipping around with no clear motivation or cause where the flip itself becomes the cause for the next one. Maybe the actor was given instructions and failed at them, but it does seem like something was missing in building up the characters. Certainly not something I can see costing 180 million USD, the most of all Star Wars projects.

The light sabre duels were amazing and the fall from the bridge thing was like crouching tiger hidden Jedi. The two central characters Mae and Osha were not quite strong enough true, but the surrounding characters were really great. I did get the two mixed up especially when they changed costumes. As you say it must be so difficult to make such a series. And the Jungian duality theme was great and not just the hero’s journey again. I think Amandala Stenberg really shone in the last episode. It was a challenging pair of roles to play, for sure. We see monsters in other people, we fight them by canceling them online, because the world has become so much more complicated than for the vast majority of human existence. We want heroes with super powers, because it’s so difficult to stand out in this world. One thing I’ve loved about Star Wars since the very beginning is the clothing. Capes aren’t particularly practical, but they’re beautiful, and anyone in this galaxy can show up in a cape at any time. The Acolyte does not disappoint in this, and best of all I think is Qimar’s flowing black in the battle against Sol, it moves wonderfully and more so with his graceful, powerful fighting moves. The Jedi costumes express their success and prosperity in this era, and Venestra’s varying levels of formality in various situations. These costumes are all eye candy as costuming has been throughout the franchise.

I think the show would have fared better without the "unreliable narrator" approach -- the same sense of mystery could have been achieved by simply alternating from current to past, such as with flashbacks at key moments, without adding the confusion of the conflicting perspectives. That would have freed up screen time that could have been better used for character work or just more plot development. Overall, I enjoyed the show tho -- it had some great choreography, an intriguing story, and some memorable characters and performances (even if they did kill off all of my favorites 😱)! I do agree that the Mae/Osha dynamic would probably have been better served if Amandla Stenberg had played one while a different actress played the other. It wasn't a perfect show, but it was still a good show that fit in well with the other Star Wars movies and series, and certainly doesn't deserve the blind rage or hate so many throw at it. Hopefully they'll explore more of the older Republic eras with future shows! Star Wars has so much more to offer as a franchise than just the original characters and their extended family.

And like you've said (I've even said this in response to people losing their minds about issues in media like games where their complaints are at best petty), there are real problems in the world so when we criticise work like this, it should be done appropriately... I myself have had an appalling last three years (middle of 2021 until early 2024) with needing to write off family so toxic, they streesed me out to the point they triggered epilepsy in me (in part) and a parent was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's which might be genetic and might already be starting in me... But forms of escapism like The Acolyte, Ahsoka, Spider-Man 2, GoW:Ragnarok, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, Control, The Mandalorian, and the list goes on, have literally held me together... And those two events are just the two major points... There have been moments where I've been worried I might lose my job and have been so grateful that the few friends that are still able to respond via a text message do respond... Even if it takes months. Thanks again, man.

0:47 THANK YOU!!! My thoughts EXACTLY 💯 it is a serious low point for the fandom... I loved the acolyte and nearly every comment online or any content creator who supports the acolyte is harassed by these weird rage mongers. Its a tv show, it didnt murder your family member or committed gen0 cide . Grown adults acting this way about a TV SHOW, truly demonstrates how shallow their minds are to the actual world and what actually matters. If I dont like a show, I DONT WATCH IT, I dont review bomb it and then announce everywhere how you are not watching the show. It just makes the old adage about Star Wars fans true, we're insufferable man-children who btch and moan about everything, and nobody should even try making Star Wars content because the fans will always hate everything. Its WHY George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney in the first place... why Hayden hated playing Anakin, because of the hate he received for the prequels. Its Embarrassing... because actual fans just want Star Wars content and everyone who tries is always brutalized, mocked and ridiculed for enjoying the lore. So yeah I loved the Acolyte, and its as divisive as a political election which is ridiculous and embarrassing for those lame "fans"

It felt like half the time the Jedi forgot they could use the Force, and Master Sol getting Force choked to death by Osha felt really inconsistent with what Sol was doing during the fight with Qimir. It made it seem that Vader/Anakin could have just force choked Obi Wan to death during any of his encounters if he had actually seriously wanted Obi Wan dead. Some of the choreography could have been done a lot better, mostly just make some of the swings look like they were trying to strike the opponent. Though I will say the Sol vs Qimir in the last episode was probably the best choreographed fight. There was hardly any swings that looked like they were just aiming for the air.

Sol was emotionally broken at that point having to say his sins to the person he tried to protect. He wasn’t trying to fight when osha grabbed him out of anger to get him to stop talking. Regarding other fights, force choking is the cowards way out. A true night will show their ability to use a saber. Fight like a mandalorian. Anakin wanted to show he could beat obi wan in a “fair” fight after his last loss.

The last episode of Acolyte harmed the series: in the end, Osha doesn’t make any sense as a character. Why did she go to the dark side when she always knew that Sol was fundamentally good, always on her side to protect her? He didn’t kill Mother Aniseya on purpose; he was justified in his behavior, attempting to protect them. Putting others into danger makes you evil if you did that for malicious or selfish reasons - and Sol doesn’t flunk that test, in my opinion. Yeah, the show-runners wanted to reveal that he overstepped his bounds a little bit - the Jedi are flawed - but ultimately he was trying to protect two children from a coven of 50 dark side using witches. It is “odd”, at the very least, to have two young force using children (created by the Force!) in a coven of 50 witches, going through dark rituals, right? The Jedi are like superhero cosmic police, correct? What am I missing here? And why did they spend so much show time to give us the tragedy in the mine fortress from two different perspectives? What did that ultimately achieve? The two perspectives concept didn’t pay off because Sol was ultimately a good person in both views. Was he supposed to allow the witch smoke maneuver to disintegrate Mae without any defensive reaction? His goal was to protect the children - and yes, there is some gray area due to the Jedi overstepping their authority or interests - I get that point, but the witch coven was going to forcefully abuse the two girls by making them the new leaders of the coven, no matter what they wanted for themselves. What would a good hearted police officer do in a similar situation? The Jedi are motivated to protect and bring about peace in the Galaxy… Also, Venestra ends up being evil (making the Jedi look terrible… again). You’re right about things being complicated as opposed to simply black and white - but there has to be some solid ground in terms of right vs wrong. Sol was done super dirty by the script; the Jedi were shown to be far more bad/incompetent/selfish than good. That’s a mistake - and shows a misunderstanding of Star Wars as a framework for telling stories and teaching morality. The Acolyte had the opportunity to focus on the dark side users. Make them complex, even sympathetic via their tragic back stories - which is what they partially/poorly did with the witch coven and Qimir. But then they make Venestra an evil manipulator, Torbin an immature child, and Sol a secret murderer (when in actuality, he was a good hearted police officer motivated to protect two children). This is a missed opportunity (again!), ending up at a sad 5/10 overall score. This is Last Jedi level of missed opportunities - which is a real shame because Star Wars deserves better. At least we have Andor (thank goodness!)

For me, Osha's turn to the dark side made perfect sense because she had blind faith in Sol and the gravity of the betrayal she felt was too mcuh to handle. Her relative "innocence," compared to Mae, made these feelings even harder to process, resulting in an emotional breakdown of such magnitude that it bled the lightsaber crystal.

I enjoyed this series about as much as I enjoyed Andor. It wasn't just some Jedi/Sith fights mixed in with some small talk dialogue. It gave you insight to how flawed the Jedi Order had become. For several thousand years the Jedi were expected to always do what was right. Without any checks and balances, any group, faction, government, or controlling body will inevitably get corrupted. Eventually someone will abuse the power that was given to them and use it to their advantage. The Acolyte makes you have to think and even question what is right and what is wrong. Like Palpatine says to Yoda, your arrogance blinds you. An institution after so many years becomes narrow minded and forgets why they are in the position they are in. Right or wrong, we need to be able to question our decisions so if it was a wrong decision, we can be held accountable for the action and learn from it, so it does not happen again in the future.

I think the intent and purpose of the show was to basically elaborate on what Senator Rayencourt said in the finale: "I think the Jedi are a massive system of unchecked power, posing as a religion, a delusional cult that claims to control the uncontrollable". And "When you're looking up to heroes, you don't have to face what's right in front of you". And this definitely struck a nerve in some SW fans, as some fans do hold the Jedi in a very positive hero light, the show tries to elaborate on how the Jedi are a lot more multi-dimensional than that. Multi-faceted with multiple layers, like an ogre.

This idea that the Jedi are some out of control group isn’t the reality. It’s a flawed group as all group would be but they fundamentally stand for good in the galaxy so just because of a few individuals in the group fall to the dark or lose control doesn’t mean the whole organisation should be depicted as problematic. They are essentially warrior Monk police and to suggest that someone in that position with that much power shouldn’t be trying to control their emotions or be stoic or objective in high stakes situations is a silly narrative to try to create in the Star Wars universe tbh.

All the haters out there they just want to relive the prequels and forget that the prequels back then received the same or worst hate from fans of the OG trilogy that were expecting the style and pace of the OG on the prequels. I really love The Acolyte and they must do a season 2. The only thing I would say is that the episodes should have been at least an hour long. I believe the writers have a lot more story to tell and due to scheduling and profit margins they limited the episodes. Everyone from the actors to the crew did an amazing job and can't wait for season 2.

He definitely didn't appear to be breathing after Osha choked him. I wonder why Sol said it was ok and didn't fight back from being choked. Did he feel he deserved this for what he did? Bleeding the kyber crystal was cool but very sad. It was sad to see Osha's fall to the Dark Side. Vernestra covering up everything and framing Sol was just gross. Did she do this because she wanted to use Mae to find Qimer? Plagueus looked awesome! I appreciate your call for civility and positivity. We have issues with inflation and economy and such, but things aren't THAT bad. The problem with much of the news media, is good news is no news, unfortunately. "If it bleeds, it leads."
