When Joanne made the choice to publicise her bigotry, I made the choice, which was indeed a CHOICE, to allow her bigotry and wrongness and gross ideas to taint her work. As a human being, I do have a horse in this race because I live in the world. I will not support a person who wants my FRIENDS, my community members, to stop existing. I will not prioritize sickly comfortable bigotry and nostalgia over another human's right to exist and pursue happiness. That would be selfish. That would be wrong.

Unfortunately, as a homosapian on this planet many people's idea of happiness happens to be hurting others in the process. We've seen this before. As a person who doesn't condone this my concerns are many learned to be enablers in a toxic system that was inherited. It's repulsive no matter the gender or ethnicity. This idea of happiness is subjective not everyone agrees what that looks like and many people get a rush from hurting others. Whole industry built around it called social media to the press. Journalistic integrity seems dead. I do support the LGBTQA+ how ever many letters (apparently many added) we share a planet briefly. Only briefly rather peacefully enjoy that while ensuring people get quality care especially medical globally regardless of their ethnicity or gender. JK has millions plenty yet, I see few in that celebrity bunch do anything to actually lessen suffering. Which means one day JK Rowlings words might just backfire when she is sick needing medical attention support herself. In a number of ways money doesn't always buy quality and it can't buy away people's hate. Something she isn't considering. None of them are pulling this shit.

Exactly! We all make choices. Her as a powerful woman of influence to spill her harmful ideas leveraging her platform and us as consumers of art to not consume nor support her art. If we can do that on every other aspect of life, we can do it with art. And we are not obligated to listen to her. Yeah, she could keep on shouting her bigoted ideas, but we have the liberty to not hear her. If I keep on offending people, they can turn their backs on me and that's ok. And that applies to her too. She might have been on her stardom tower for too long that she forgot, but it still applies to her.

NGL, it's in really bad taste. There's a reason even much better writers don't portray the slave races they create this way. JKR thought she knew better anyway and painted Hermione as in the wrong even after she suggests they might have been conditioned and the others can't really refute her. Does JKR explore that in a world of powerful jinxes, hexes, curses, artifacts and magical contracts? Of course not.

A friend of mine asked what she could do about wanting to replace her HP books after a fire. I found copies in brilliant condition at a second hand book sale fundraiser for a phone counselling hotline, that has recently announced a specialised LGBTQI service. Rowling doesn't get any money, my friend got a physical reminder of her childhood memories back (her late mother used to read them to her) and the money went to support the community... I call that a win. And I hope Rowling finds out that the community has benefited in some small way from her work.

I have multiple queer friends who’ve told me that Harry Potter books were so important to them; both a gay guy and a trans woman, they both told me that they related to Harry, he wasn’t accepted by his family and was forced to live under the stairs, much like my friends were both unaccepted by their family, and felt forced to live “under the stairs” or in the closet. On one hand, it’s upsetting that a woman who helped a trans woman through her youth, is now a steaming transphobe. But also, I try to find some cynical joy in it knowing that Jk doesn’t support trans people, yet her book was helpful to a young trans girl.

I was part of the potterhead fandom years ago, it was a safe place for diversity, cuz people believed that it was for diversity, we believed that was the message of the series. And the clear errors in the saga, very questionable, such as racial issues, slavery, we believed that it was because she did not have knowledge at the time, but she would educate herself. We were so wrong, I was so wrong I believe her pro-diversity rants were genuine, I am a black woman and I was so happy to see a black actress cast in the play, after all, for years I was bothered by the change in Ron's girlfriend and so many other things. Thinking she was trying to get better. With the film Fantastic Beasts, she already showed that her speech was not genuine and it only got worse later. Headcanons that made the cast more racially, sexually, gender-diverse were not uncommon. Tumblr works like that, fanfics too, so it was horrible to see her being a terf Also, supporting anti-LGBT, racist, sexist politicians, because obviously these conservatives support her terfism. And terfs throw everyone under the bus without thinking twice. For her to say that she is "disappointed", when she showed that she doesn't care about her formed fans at all, she gets the checks normally and everything is fine, JK has NO RIGHT to be disappointed! She propagates and finances hatred, WE'RE who have the right to feel disappointed. And we were and then we forgot about her, cuz it's not worth it. I'm not even disappointed in her anymore, this feeling i left for years ago before she showed herself who she really was and I had a wrong impression about her, a good impression. Boy this point I've known for a long time what a terrible human being JK is.

I thought little of it, just to file away "Jessie Gender is a good egg" in my head, and then KZbin put you in my recommendations today. So I watched, and I was so glad that I did. First of all, your sweatshirt is spiffy AF. I am a casual Star Trek fan, I like to watch it when it's on, but I don't seek it out. When I was in college, Next Generation was the newest iteration (I am old!) and we would come together in the common room to watch it in my dorm. Excellent memories, and a great franchise for all sorts of reasons. Secondly, that paraphrased Fred speech was perfect and well performed. Good job on tying your thoughts together with the words of a story that still resonates. Thirdly, feminism is intersectional, and anyone who doesn't get that doesn't understand that freedom for all, equality, and equity, is key. I am a cisgender woman who stands proudly with her trans sisters and brothers (and all marginalized folks) to demand equal rights. For all. Full stop. Thank you for standing up for all of us.

Sad to say, Rowing is not the first author to do that for me. But my other favourite asshole authors died in real life decades ago. So their works live on, despite their author’s reputation. In a way, giving them the “benefit of the doubt” that they were bigots because their prejudices were simply more widespread at the time (racism, sexism etc.) Also helped that said asshole authors always at least tried to treat fans politely, if nothing else lol Rowling apparently can’t even do that. For shame! She’s become Voldemort before our very eyes! What a timeline to be alive in.

In the Harry Potter books the reason that bigotry is wrong is because the bigots are factually incorrect about why they're bigoted. Muggle born wizards aren't actually worse at magic than wizard born, so it is wrong to be bigoted against muggle born. The problem is that not many people think like that, so the lesson they got was "bigotry is inherently wrong" not "bigotry is wrong as long as it's inaccurate." JKR's logic is consistent with the lesson in the books, she thinks that bigotry against trans people is factually correct (which it isn't), so she isn't a bad person in her mind for being bigoted against trans people.

She is overexaggerating to make a point, namely how ridiculous burning her books is, especially since all of her work is about people fighting wizard-Hitler, even the Fantastic Beast films are about just that. I‘ve read some of her stuff and I honestly find most of her proper commentary reasonable. Like the question whether or not a trans-woman should go to the Ladies room, because that could open the door to predators (which doesn’t mean trans women are predators, in fact they need to be protected, too). Even if you don’t agree with her on that topic, it’s foolish to boycott her or burn her books; no it’s actually criminal. Nazis burned books of people they didn’t agree with. Burning books is always a really bad idea, even if it’s something as abominable as Mein Kampf. That’s the price of free speech. When the drama surrounding Rowling's political views started to really ramp up, I began to question my own interaction with the Harry Potter franchise. I grew up on it, like many of us did, and it helped me find a love of reading. But in my adult life, that love began to falter simply because it contextualized some of the issues I had with the series and particular representations. I became a "casual fan" I suppose. But then I happened to tune into one of your gaming streams right around the time you and a friend of yours began talking about how Rowling's ideology directly affected your personal lives. I believe it was when Elden Ring first came out. Your friend made a comment, basically summarized as "If I see someone wearing a Harry Potter related shirt out in public, I have to assume they could harm me for my own safety." That sealed the deal for me. My love for the Harry Potter franchise is vastly outweighed by my love of other people, regardless of their situation, and my desire to assure them that I am a safe place for them to turn to. I never want anyone, stranger or friend, to feel like I could have any ill intent towards them. You are fighting a good fight, Jessie. I've valued your insights for quite some time now. Hearing your thoughts and rational arguments helps me as a cis individual to better understand aspects of the trans experience that I can then use to be a better ally to both my loved ones and strangers I meet everyday. You continue to teach me how to be more intentional in my allyship, how to discuss certain topics with empathy, when it's appropriate to come to the defense of those under fire and when to instead cheer for them while they fight their own battles. I am so grateful to you and your willingness to put yourself in these positions. I know I don't know you, but I'm freaking proud of you. Thank you for everything you do.

It really is terrifying how JKR has developed this (seemingly?) massive following, who will attack anyone who she tags because they did the tiniest thing she doesn't agree with. I hope you weren't put down by the messages on twitter, and were able to ignore it all and continue to have a great Christmas, you certainly deserve to! Today, I, a transgender gay man, took my 2 daughters ice skating for the first time. They are 8 and 6 years old and had a great time. My husband doesn't skate (seriously, he's a 90s kid like me, how is that possible) so he watched and laughed and got hot chocolate when the girls needed a break. My 8yo daughter was very cautious and took her time getting used to the skates; my 6yo went fearlessly flying around the rink, laughing whenever she fell down and yelling, "Look, Daddy! I fell on my booty!"

They were a DVD of the first Fantastic Beasts film (which I no longer own) and a German 20th Anniversary set of the books that look very pretty on a shelf. Not long after the book purchase, I found out about Rowling's transphobia and stopped interacting with her works monetarily. The tragedy of the Harry Potter books is that they also had good stuff. The books certainly have problematic elements but they also have compassion, love, and fighting prejudice. It's just a shame that the author has proven time and time again that she doesn't share the best qualities of her characters. Especially since Harry Potter is a character so related to LGBT people. Growing up in a family that is hostile and abusive because of something you can't help and don't understand. Something that is intrinsically a part of you that your family thinks they can force out with cruelty. Pratchett is definitely a million times better. Piracy doesn't work, for one big reason. When you support a work of art, you're actually spending two types of currency; money and power. You're not just financially supporting the creator, but you're also supporting their influence by enjoying their work. By pirating the work, you're still supporting the work by continuing to intake it. You're sending the message that you love the work regardless of whether you're willing to pay for it. It gives the work, and the creator, the power over you and your desires. And that power is ultimately what JKR wants. People think money is everything, but they fail to realize that money is a stand-in for power. Money gives us the ability to obtain what we want, to go where we want, to do what we want, to tell others what to do. Money gives us power, but power is the real resource. Power is the end goal in every money-related scenario. It's all about power.

I’m sorry to hear the dementors have been targeting you. They feed on human happiness, generating feelings of depression and despair. Keep your patronus shining bright. You are such an amazing person and your kindness in the face of hate is astonishing. It really speaks to your character. The world is a better place with you in it and would be even better if more people were like you. Happy holidays and God bless us, everyone.

JK Rowling simply can't handle reality being different from the fake world she created in her head (and I'm not talking about Harry Potter).

It just goes to show that it doesn't matter how reasonable or how diplomatic you are, the GC/TERF crowd will always find ways and excuses to threaten and dehumanise you. How they manage to go about their day to day with such vitriol in their heads is beyond me. You are wonderful Jessie - while they are weighed down by hate, you buoy others up. Happy New Year, and thank you.

My heart sank when I saw that thumbnail. Not sure I have the stomach to sit through the whole thing rn, but I just wanna be the umpteenth person to tell you you're amazing. Your content has helped me come to terms so much with my queerness, and that's something wonderful Rowling could never understand.

Rowling is part of an ever-growing group of people who believe that they should be able to say and do whatever they want, whenever they want, and suffer no consequences as a result. It's the behaviour of an insecure child and I wonder how they get to be such broken human beings.

You and other trans individuals do not deserve the hate that she has helped direct your way. You absolutely deserve support. I used to own all of the Harry Potter books, and do think of them fondly, but gave them away this year because I haven't felt the urge to re-read any of them in years. I also never really got into the movies. If I ever do feel the desire to read them again, I'll borrow them from the library. I refuse to give her any of my money, or support her in any way, but at the same time I won't let her destroy what they meant to me growing up.

When JK first started with her TERF nonsense, I tried to give her the benefit of a doubt. I thought she just didn’t understand and was upset because of things she had suffered in her own life. But with the way she keeps doubling down, refusing to concede anything and sending her supporters to harass anyone who criticizes her, she has shown her true colors. She is one of the very few authors I will never read anymore. I’m sorry for what you had to go through, Jessie.

It's clear what happened. You can watch it on her Twitter timeline. It started exactly how you thought. JK didn't really know much about, or care much about trans people. But money insulates. Some Terfs got her ear. They deliberately started picking at the ways sexism has harmed and traumatized her and started directing her anger at trans people. When fans called her out for the terf things, her terf friends said "See!? You're being attacked! Again! It's all that sexism all over again! This is why we fight!" JK bought it and doubled down. Which led to more backlash, which lead to more victim complex they could foster in her, which led to more doubling down, etc etc. All the while JK's terf friends are isolating her even more than he money does, like a cult. JK does not talk to people that aren't terfs anymore unless she is "fighting back" or something. She's in an echo chamber, and the amount of money she has means nothing can force her out of it. She has the money to fire and avoid anyone that could challenge her worldview. And sadly, because she's such a piggybank, the terfs are VERY invested in keeping JK believing their rhetoric. I think it's very unique to JK's situation, but she's essentially found herself in a cult. Most terfs aren't as targeted or groomed as she is, because she had more to offer besides manpower. JK gives them money and celebrity endorsement. It's very sad. Not really fixable, because she won't listen to us and her handles won't let her if she tried. JK is also being victimized by terfs in a very ironic turn. None of it is an excuse for her to victimize others and she still let herself choose hate at so many junctions where she could've escaped. She's still "canceled" for what she's done and continues to do. But it is sad what happened to her.

I am absolutely furious. I've said it before, but it remains true; you are one of the kindest, most compassionate and empathetic creators I have ever seen, and you consistently use your knowledge and intellect to try to guide people to a better and more enlightened viewpoint. It's disgusting that she would target you in any way, you absolutely deserve so much better. I hope you are safe and surrounded by love and good vibes. Also, the whole SPEW plotline always felt weird to me, though images sense now. Happy Festive Season, and thank you for another year of fantastic content!

I really appreciate your style and your kindness and you really do change people's minds and hearts.

well it is not your fault that public education teaches a very simplistic and reductionist model on sex development and gender identity, expression, and perception it is just very sad to see social media and for-profit news sites purposefully not providing academic contexts, and intentionally misleading and confusing their viewers. or people not realizing that influencers like matt walsh are published by a group that claims the old testament is historically and scientifically accurate

I love the fact that she couldn't find a mean tweet from you to react to because you are too good of a person 🙂 it's obvious that she's intentionally misrepresenting your words. I'm sad you have to go through this and even more sad that you are so used to this kind of bullying that you are just ready to deal with it. Can you imagine the work the editors of the Harry Potter books had to do to turn that kind of word salad into books, though 😅I hope they were rewarded handsomely.

I've fantasized about getting a bunch of people together and hijacking a live Q&A session with her by rapid-fire pointing out all the ways her writing is shit such that she can't get a word in edgewise. Maybe get some of her more high profile critics like Neil Gaiman, K. A. Applegate, and Alan Moore in the room to actively start building a more compelling and coherent fantasy world than her own on the spot in front of her. Really rub her face in how shit she is and how much of a footnote she'll be in the history of fantasy literature. Sure she made a lot of money, but so has Alex Jones.
