I wish more people understood this instead of just looking at the max power ratings. My favorite sounding high end loudspeaker runs about 89dB sensitivity, it takes a crap ton of power to get loud but oh man does it sound good.

Hehe, rant challenge accepted. I guess you refer to those sound level meters set in dBA weighting, which makes no sense at all if you're actually after factual data. As the literature on the topic explains, it's a weighting that was modelled after the human hearing, while it turns out it actually was an intentional misconception pushed by noisy lobbies (factories, transport, and so on) in order to cheat health and noise regulations. Since decades ago they convinced authorities worldwide to use dBA as the weighting in their sound level meters, and as I checked myself dBA is definitely used in the regulations where I live (from 2011). However, dBA can't really measure any bass frequency and it's pretty useless. For scientificallly-valid measurements we would actually need to use dBZ weighting, which essentially means no weighting. The problem is affordable sound level meters won't include this weighting. But yeah, I got a meter with dBZ weighting and it truly represents what I hear and feel (bass, rumble, vibrations...), while immediately afterwards measuring dBA shows how much of a bodge it is. That being said, actually I have two 102 dB speakers: - Celestion Century, the first guitar speaker using a neodymium magnet. - Beyma 12GA50, a full-range speaker used not only on guitars, but recommended by the manufacturer for that purpose (and I confirm it really feels like a regular speaker when used with IRs).

BTW, I'm the bassist bringing too much gear and spending a bunch of money on it, lol. Soon to include some barefaced cabinets

Almost decided on driver, needs to be able to handle at least 60 watts tube (RMS?) regular guitar. Could it handle 5 watts transistor ( bass )? jack of all trades, not destroy the speaker and still sound good Luvin the info. Keep on rocking.👍👍✌️

I’ve got a 2 speaker cab with a 10” and a 12”. The 12” is a V30 and I’ve been swapping between a G10 Vintage and a G10 Creamback. I was surprised at how much different the sound level was between the two even though they were both paired with the V30. The G10 Vintage is loud compared to the Creamback. The specs only show a 1db difference, 96 and 97. Maybe its wrong?

I'm so freaking obsessed with speakers, another one just arrived today (a Jensen Vibranto EM 1220 for my Ampeg B12X for bass playing). This information is just what I needed, but I'm still confused, so many mixed opinions by "experts", all I can do is go by my ears, if it sounds good it IS good. Lately I like 10" speaker more than 12" for guitar, and I understand bass players prefer them to 15" for recording and home use, but is that really true, and which bass players and what kind of drugs have they taken.......?

You can’t define the sound of speakers by their diameter - there are many other parameters that affect their tone which vary by far greater amounts and thus have a far greater impact.

In the Rob Chapman video, the Barefaced 1x12 sounded louder in the room than the Victory 2x12. In this video, you suggest that a 2x12 (closed back cab or qty. two 1x12 cabs), due to acoustic coupling, can increase by 3 dB the SPL over a single 1x12 cab (1 watt/1 meter/half space..anechoic chamber?). Also in this video, you mention that AVD technology helps us hear the cone front AND back, is ported for Helmholtz resonance to improve bass frequencies (vs. a typical open back), and therefore AVD can increase dB SPL by 3 dB. Okay, so now I have questions: So are we to assume then, that AVD also minimizes the standing waves or comb filtering or other cancelations that occur inside of a closed back cab? Therefore, the Barefaced 1x12 AVD appears to increase dB SPL by more than 3 dB? Making it perceivably louder than a closed back 2x12?

Very interesting details. What happens exactly if different speakers, one 60w and one 15w for an example, get connected. And if I add more 15w speakers... How is this effecting the sound and the loudness in comparison with one 60w speaker. It's because I like the sound of the celestion blue very much. 🤔

If you put a 15 and 60 together you'll just likely damage the 15 before the 60. Need to know the sensitivity to determine whether one will be louder than the other. Watts don't matter except telling you how large of an amp you CAN use, sensitivity tells you how loud each of those watts will be. A 105db 1W/1M 15w speaker will be louder than a 95db 1M/1M 60w speaker

I am really enjoying these videos, they are fascinating. But I have to have to ask about your explanation of sensitivity when you have 2 speakers. You said the sensitivity goes up from 100 to 103db, twice as loud, but you also said they didn’t have to be in the same cabinet. In which you are driving them separately at 1w each, so 2w giving 103db, so still 100db for 1w? Or am I misunderstanding?
