I have a Christian therapist now. She gets the balance between mind, body, and spirit. I'm a Veteran, diagnosed with PTSD/Complex PTSD, MST, Major Depressive Disorder, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It took years to find the right therapies and meds to help with crisis, and prayer. . so much prayer and guidance through it all. Therapy can be not so great though if it opens door ways with New Age, Buddhism. . ect. You have to go at it biblically. I am not on any medications now and do therapy for maintenance.

Thank you for posting this. Recently I've made the decision to find a truly christian therapist to help me with things that I seem to struggle to get results from with friends or pastors. I know now how important your mental health is and its tough when your parents and christian friend's answers are only to pray and read the bible more like Orlando says. Sometimes the pain and problems are a lot deeper than that.

Not to mention how several people in the Bible dealt with suicidal thoughts and/or depressive symptoms, and God didn't get angry with them or say they needed more faith. People like Elijah, Paul, and Jonah, who we look up to so highly because of what they did for God, still felt so weighed down by the pressures of life that they didn't want to keep going at times. God gave Elisha rest, food, and a purpose in the desert; He gave Paul strength as he relied on God. And Jonah, even though one could argue that the reason for his anger and depression was wrong, still wasn't condemned by God. God talked to him kindly and tried to reason with him. He didn't shame any of those heroes of the faith for their weakness, so we can't judge those around us who are struggling either.

My hot takes as someone who works in mental health and also goes to church: -A lot of churches preach an emotional prosperity gospel, in which mental and physical wellbeing is seen as guaranteed if faith is genuine. -A lot of people who are against mental health have no idea what therapy actual entails. They often themselves do basically the same thing with their pastors. -Christians (people in general, really) can be really bad at giving concrete advice. They often have good general principles (like praying and trusting God, etc), but fail at translating these ideas to practical steps that people who are suffering can follow. I think that this is one of the biggest reasons people leave the church.

Mental health can also strongly be related to physical health. I have stuggled with depression and anxiety since I was a baby. This was a great video and important for people to hear!

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for this. I grew up believing that if I was having mental/emotional problems, it was just cause "I'm not praying enough" or "reading the bible enough". I ended up hating myself, being suicidal, and thinking I was the worst Christian in the universe. Those things are absolutely important, but they never made my problems suddenly disappear. In fact, the more I took my Christian faith seriously and grown in maturity, the worse my problems got. Then I found out I'm not stupid or evil, I have ADHD and it's been the source of most of my problems for most of my life. I still struggle with suicidal desires, self hatred, depression, anxiety, etc etc. And guess what? Going to church, praying, and reading the bible has not made them go away. AND THAT'S OKAY. This is how my brain was designed, and it's something I need to get through with help from God and things like therapy, DNRS, meds, whatever it takes. I grew up believing SO many harmful lies because Christians in general are so ignorant and afraid of things they don't understand like mental health problems and science. They're too afraid and prideful to do their research and accept "new" ideas. God is NOT anti-science, and He created our extremely complex brains and minds, AND He understands and knows mental illness. He literally knows how our brains tick and every single tiny detail of them. He created them, after all. Thank you again for this video, I've been struggling with mental health really bad lately and I'm so glad there's a Christian speaking out on this!

I just got diagnosed with ADHD last year and I am 56. Getting professional help or a Christian counselor is very helpful and good. You might want to talk to your doctor about medication if you need to. It's not a sin if you have a mental illness. God really understands you, because He's the one who made you. He really loves you because He sent Jesus Christ to rescue you and He cares.

dude, that's exactly what should be addressed, there are truly some christians who would say stuff like "anxiety is a sin" or mental illnesses don't exist", I have autism and ocd, and one time a friend of mine (he's orthodox) he said to me "you're not autistic, I rebuke it in the name of the holy trinity", I asked him "would you rebuke schizophrenia" and he said "yes" and even said "schizophrenic people can see demons" or saying stuff like "this is all demonic influence", I wasn't going to start a debate but I can tell some people are kind of being fundamentalists and don't even realize. mental illnesses are a real thing, these people need real help, telling them that they don't need meds is telling them to make things worse, go figure

Elijah was so angry he wanted to die and so God helped him sleep and gave him bread. Never underestimate the spiritual power of a nap and a snack. I guess it depends on each circumstance. If God wants to use your story for His glory, He will ask you not to go to a therapist and to just rely solely on Him. Over 2 years ago I was in dire need of both a therapist and medical care, as I was on my death bed. I kept asking the Lord to bring me the right people (yes, we are asked to go to God first unless of course we’re not breathing and need to be rushed to the hospital) and I heard God as clear as day in my spirit say “Just trust me”. Here I am over 2 years later, restored in my mind and in my health. He showed me the necessary steps to take to heal physically and taught me psychology to heal my mental health and showed me where it stemmed from. The best thing we can do for each of ourselves is to go to God and seek HIM first as we are able then act on what He instructs us to do.

Thanks for this. This is especially important as someone who's been hearing voices. I've even gone to deliverance ministry and they had me repent and renounce of mental therapy, and they tried casting things out of me. It's honestly been traumatic, and it's been very scary to hear people say that they think what I am going through is demonic. But, now that I have a psychotic depression diagnosis and am on medications, I am on the road to recovery and have been hearing less auditory hallucinations. It's a combo of medication, therapy, and continuing to follow God every day without the pressure of needing to be "delivered" from anything. I just go about my day normally. Being a Christian that experiences psychosis is quite an isolating and unique experience.
@ET00712 ай бұрын
Yes I feel for you, a lot of those deliverance ministries think that there are demons behind everything when sometimes there are actual mental health conditions, sometimes deliverance may work but ultimately that comes from the Lord, some of the deliverance ministries keep people in bondage by saying it’s always a demon when it’s not, I’ll keep you in prayer 🙏

I got miraculously healed overnight from 7.5 years major depression, 1.5 years after becoming a Christian. God helped me through the depression, but the miraculous healing was when a church member prayed for me and I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders, like an evil spirit had left me. As Christians we also need to recognise that spiritual forces are often at play in mental health (e.g. the demon possessed man in Mark 5/Luke 8) and Jesus wants to and WILL heal, but in His timing!! And God also takes bad things and turns them out for our good, it was my desperation in the depression that led me to Christ!

Some people act like being a Christian means that you're not going to go through rough times. Mental health is 100% real. God will not and cannot fix all your problems. We're broken people in a broken world. God can help you through your problems, but it requires that you help yourself. The correct therapy can possibly help you too. Anyone who disregards or invalidates someone who is dealing with a mental health crisis needs to go to therapy too. There are people suffering in our lives and we might not even know it.

Are you sure the voices are demonic, and not just verbal auditory hallucinations like I'm experiencing? I think you should try again with the medication - maybe something will help.
