I've platform towed in the Owens Valley with Mark Gibson and Kerry Castle, and flown XC in eastern Washington. I didn't have such a nice glider though. Mike Bomstad always makes this look easy, way to go pilot. I also remember flying into dust devils to try and find lift... it was like flying into a dust storm and I once realized I was going in the same direction as the spin, I had to leave it and fly back into it against the wind/dust. It nearly broke my wing, but I climbed out of that hole in that dust devil😈, I said thank you.

Waau waau waau. So many memories when we started since 1979 (ater my studies were completed). Just yesterday our brothers had to evacuate my late mom's old residence. Out of it came my original hang glider harness. Froom all the furniture, that was my choice. I started with a Rogolo, Happy Duck, Moved to a Tornado, Strato Star, Super Wing when I had to terminate my career as I had to start constructing my first house. Life is not fair, however the Lord has been good to me. Thank you for posting. Envy you bro. Love from deep dark Africa.

On my first tow I got off at about 1,200' AGL in strong lift and rode it to just under Class A airspace, fumbling to get the oxygen on as it went up. Looks awsome! Flew hangliders during the 90´s. Then gliders (sailplanes) for about about 10 years when kids where growing up. (had walking distance to the glider club). Havent flown anything for about 10 years. Im missing the pure flying experinece of hangliders. But start to feel a bit old. :) Im mainly intrested in thermal flying and XC. Atos looks to do the bit very well! Curious how it handles, and the real differences between the VR and the VQ models. Cant find mych info at all about the real world diffrences.
@MikeBomstad
@MikeBomstad Жыл бұрын
The Atos flies great. Spoilerons for turning. Flaps for trim and landing. Optional adjustable tail (work in conjunction with the flaps) You can also get a speed break option. They are heavier than a flex wing. Unless you are small the have a VRS which is very close in weight to a topless flex wing weight.With a clean harness your get 20/1 GR. The factory says the VQR and VR have the same performance. The VQR having quicker handling. The VR flying like its on rails. Not in a bad way, feels like it doesn't wonder as much, but a little slower in roll.
@RocketSailing
@RocketSailing Жыл бұрын
Thank you som much for your reply! Whight is one of my concerns. VRS I would fit, but id be in the top end of the hook in wheight. My last hanglider was a kingpost performance, Just when topless was starting to arrive more commnly. But was tricky to flare at landings. I see alot doing belly landings With Atos wings. Prefered way in low wind condistions? @@MikeBomstad
@MikeBomstad
@MikeBomstad Жыл бұрын
@RocketSailing Sorry I didnt see this sooner. Unless you are a very small pilot, I would not recommend the VRS. The VR or VQ would be great. They are not like a flex with regards to handling and wing loading. Many pilots dont have good landing skills. The Atos will not help bad habits. I tend to run my landings out just to be safe. No wind is fine if done correctly. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZLXaZWBprmEsKM kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKW6nWShgLp9p9E kzbin.info/www/bejne/faLNk2iQf7mfr7c

Mark here again... I'd like to ask you a couple of questions when you get yourself into a thermal (given you have your face in the wind)? . . . As you hit a thermal, do you sense any of the following: 1. sudden serious change in temperature?( do you face like a a waterfall of cold sinking air on the leeward side followed by a sudden warm air updraft?), 2. a change in sound (does the updraft of the thermal sound different?) . And here is a crazy concept - a thermal is suppose to have a serious static electric build up every thought that perhaps you feel, maybe, a static shock or dryness in the air (related to static build up). . Any observations?
@MikeBomstad
@MikeBomstad Жыл бұрын
There are times you can feel the temp difference. Nothing that dramatic though. A small core, strong thermal you can hear sometimes. Never had any issue with static. Haven't heard or talked to any others that have either. Maybe the slower speeds we fly?

That's a really interesting world of aviation! Are there NOTAMs for gliding activity in the areas you fly? I fear you'd be hard to spot from an airplane.

Yes, generally when you get over or near it you will start climbing. Its a very fine dust that's out there. We see more of them in that area because of it.

Wow, what release height do you reach with such an insanely long road? We can only dream of something like that here in Germany, it would probably go through two federal states and 5 different airspaces 😅 And kudos for the great camera work!

Wow oh wow. As a glider pilot, may I suggest you come out to a local glider club and give it a try. I mean you are already experienced at thermalling at 5,000ft - maybe our form of flying is boring to you, or on the other hand you may enjoy our height category.
@MikeBomstad

The 10 minutes or however long this flight was, looked to far exceed the fun and enjoyment factor I’ve had in 20 odd thousand hours of airline type flying. Unfortunately it wouldn’t feed the kids or pay the mortgage.
