I’ve only seen a few videos with Ron, but I always love them. And I respect his willingness to talk about making a mistake with overstimulating one of these guys while also not paying attention to him, how dangerous it was (getting bit in the face by a monitor is just…), and clearly having learned and adjusted his behavior

It's great to see everybody's setups. I rehab wildlife (mammals and sometimes birds) and many of the enclosures you've shown would be great for what I do here in Los Angeles, with small modifications, of course. Being able to remove panels and redesign on the spot is brilliant.

Saw a lace monitor about 2 feet away from me during my trip to Fraser Island last year. Didn't even know there was a 4 foot monitor next to us till we heard the branches and leaves rustle on the floor. The next day a lace monitor came into the camp around breakfast time expecting food. Was in hands distance just looking for scraps, the camp workers say the monitors come to the restaurant area every day because they know they will find food.

@Kamp Kenan We met and chatted when you were in Sydney (David K). The next time you come to Australia I'll take you to a couple of reliable lace monitor spots. I occasionally get them in my back yard but I have a couple of spots not far from here where you can predictably find them any warm summer day. I also have a couple of heath monitor (Varanus rosenbergi) spots not too far away, but they're not as predictably easy to find.

I admit the ones you could just walk up and pet are pretty cool. Black throats and their cousins with the same big head bumps are a somewhat calmer monitor.. But generally speaking I would never encourage people to get any monitor lizard. Too many monitors abandoned. They are totally unpredictable, expensive as hell to feed and house and keep healthy, and tend to be mean, and messy, Which is 100% of the reason people give up and abandon them or raise them improperly in not proper enclosures. (I'd be grumpy too if you shoved me in a tiny hot box when I am used to running and exploring many MANY miles per day. Even the calm big heads love to explore and have miles range in the wild!)

Awesome place, can't wait to see more...quite a few picnic grounds here in australia do get them, maybe not that particular monitor...there's a place i go to and over the years the big ones have gone missing and the younger ones have taken over, its sad cause you wonder what happened to them...they can be very nasty when it comes to food...if they are scared they will run for the closest tree and if you in the way, they have been known to mistake people for trees...you can imagine the injuries...
