2D animation is actually more expensive then 3D for shows because they would need much more animators so they would be able to meet deadlines, and 2D isn’t always better 🤷‍♀️ Sometimes 2D brings a lot of quality control as well

I’ve been kind of saying that this new generation is lacking some soul, and I think people interpret that as me and others not giving it a chance. We are, it’s just if you know anything about animation and storytelling attention to detail, even the stuff nobody sees is indicative of how much thought was put into a project. I do believe people who genuinely cared about the show worked on it, I just don’t think there were enough for it to make a huge difference and I don’t think there were enough people who really got what the original was all about. There was a few times in the movie that it felt similar to the previous generation, you can tell they really tried, but the new stuff seems very much based on selling toys and generic stuff about friendship which is a shame because the world was already built, they could have taken this in any direction, not just tried to rewrite ever

A couple of points: 1st.) As a child of the 80s, I watched those cartoons every weekday and Saturday. They were far from 'Soulless'. Were they used to sell toys? Yes. Does contemporary Anime do the same? Yes. In fact, an Anime project does not go forward until after merchandising agreements are made. 80s cartoon episodes usually revolved around a moral, where characters were confronted with an issue and in the end learned a valuable life lesson. While stories were episodic they still retained overall story arcs and character developments. Of the last generation of cartoons, I only hold shows like Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, My Little Pony, and Steven Universe as quality storytelling. 2nd.) In the early G4 seasons magic was an integrated aspect of the MLP universe's laws of physics; in fact, it even replaced gravity. For example, Ponies needed to use a large amount of magic to move the sun and moon. Using the term Thaumaturgy, magic had its own branch of scientific study. In later seasons the writers moved magic away from integrated physics to a separate aspect that could be removed or even destroyed. This is simply lazy writing. Instead of coming up with something original they fell back on magic tropes. G5's movie showed that the world did not 'need' magic to function. 3rd.) I've said it in comments before. Hasbro has outright said they are targeting "... a new audience" in investor meetings. My problem with the new 3D designs is they are too bland. I have only recently learned the term 'Uncanny Valley' and realized Hasbro is skirting the edge of it. What I have seen so far leads me to believe Hasbro is trying to distance MLP from the Friendship is Magic Brony fandom while using nostalgia bait to keep enough of them on the hook to sell views/merchandise during the transition. It is my sincere hope I am proven wrong and will let the new show stand or fall on its own merits.

80s cartoons were good for their time, but if you made a cartoon like that today, people would not like it. We can do better now, and we've gotten used to it. That's what Cleo is saying. And the uncanny valley happens when you try to make something photorealistic but you don't go all the way and it looks off. In the movie they went for photorealism and succeeded, but now they're trying to replicate the same style with a lower budget, and that's when the problems begin.

I'm not a fan of the magic system they are setting up, as it relies on all ponies being nice to each other all the time. It sounds awfully dystopian (even more than the windigos), and kind of undermines the morals of the stories and their applicability to real life. I wish they would just leave those crystals alone and move on to more interesting things. Unless they intend to explain how the crystals came to be in the first place. I'd be down for that. And yeah, it's a shame about the animation and voice acting. Maybe it will improve over time. Some scenes look ok, so there is hope.

This was a very well thought out mini review! I love how you’re not automatically bashing the film yet, but genuinely bringing up interesting questions! Though I really don’t like how Izzy and Hitch act and feel especially since they were my favourite from the movie. I always hate when they dumb down characters for no reason, usually just for comedy sake or a joke. Recent examples are something like Ninjago. Specifically with the character Kai. He USED to be a competent, albeit, hotheaded character who did have some genuine good moments, but in the current seasons, he’s been reduced to a punching bag for the writers to make some forced jokes imo. But besides that, I just really hope we can all enjoy this special! I look forward to your thoughts on it MLP FEVER! 😄💖

I’m very worried for the my little pony a new generation in the future especially with such big drops in quality. The new generation is being created and produced by an animation studio called boulder media and Irish animation studio ( I am an animation student and Irish.) This studio was also responsible for taking on my little pony G4 season 2 all the way up to G4 season 9 along with all the equestria girls movies and side series. I just hope the people in the MLP fandom give this new generations chance because I see it has so much new and fresh potential! But sadly they won’t be getting paid as much to produce and make the new generation as the did for the movie I feel bad for the animators and artist cause they want to be the best but big companies won’t allow them.

In my opinion I think people r being way too harsh on the animation. It’s the first time hasbro has done this at least with pony characters right? Give them a break, of course there are going to be errors and it’s going to look a little stiff but it my opinion it’s great for a start. I don't condone insulting artist but you have to realize this wasn't some sort of indie project made by a few people, it's a cartoon funded by a mega corporation that held an unpresidented amount of power in 2010. If you look at concept art the productive team really experimented with art styles and they all look beautiful, what in trying to get at here is Hasbro is possibly cutting corners while also riding the fading coattails of a once huge franchise without thinking about quality. most animation these days are 3d because it costs less and can be produced quicker than 2D animation. I think she's right when she says the animation looks very similar to the Boss baby because instead of spending more time and money perfecting a expressive animation style Hasbro leaned on making a product that looks generic hoping fans and children will eat it like they did with gen 4.

I’ve just seen a clip and I really don’t like the animation of the ponies, it’s so…. robotic. In the film their movements were smooth and now their limbs seems to clip into place like a buggy video game. And the colours! If you look at the Maretime Bay Adventure, he's actually a playable character. The thing to note about Make Your Mark is it takes place before their holiday Maretime Bay Day. The game happens DURING Maretime Bay Day. So I think Sprout shows up at the end of the special or events after it that lead to the game.

I agree with the voice actors part. Izzy and Hitch probably have the most noticeable change. Although, I think Izzy and Pipp/Ruby's voices are a little over the top compared to the movie Voice actors. Maybe because the new V.A are used to voicing kids' characters, therefore, making it cheerful and that traditional over the top acting compared to the old V.A that are mostly live-action actors and not voice actors (Izzy, Pipp's voice actors already has experience in voice acting (not sure about Hitch's VA). I agree that AJ (Pipp's new VA) fits the part but I would still prefer Sofia Carson. Sadly we did not notice Sofia's voice acting too much since Pipp was barely in the movie. Sofia's Pipp makes her sound elegant charming and regal but still managed to capture Pipp's "diva-ness" or "I-get-what-I-want-favorite-child" and "I'm very trendy" kind of characteristics. Also Sofia's voice is really unique. Both new and old V.A for Pipp are great, just prefer Sofia may be because I watched her in different movies and therefore I know what she's capable of. Too bad the movie didn't give Pipp too much screen time.

Unfortunately i think there just wasnt the same personal inspiration from the directors and producers of G5 as there was for G4. Its impossible to force that kind of magic thats created when someone has such a clear vision and passion for their project. G5 could never be what G4 was unless they had found someone with that same type of personal interest Lauren had to direct the story. I liked the movie and it was cute but its clearly a very corporately manufactured product, it wasnt bad and it seems like there were people involved who had passion and who cared but you can tell there isnt someone who really knows what they want to do with these characters and this story running the show. I think G4 was just sheer luck, it happened at the right time, peak fandom culture, and was like lightning in a bottle. It makes it all the more special really, but it couldn't last forever.

But i do I think they were trying a bit harder to create something big with g4, because they wanted to really revive the brand, but that sort of investment just wasnt necessary with g5 since they had already just done that and now could just work on pumping out the minimum quality animation and product for max profit. Its a cycle they seem to go through. If MLP continues as a brand id bet in another 5-10 years we get a really good generation that has more effort put into it because sales will drop eventually, but idk if it will ever top at least the first few seasons of g4.

If im being honest, the G5 series may not be exciting as G4 and if it continues to go downhill, then there’s a chance it may get canceled cause of the fans reaction and response on the way it’s handled. If hasbro decides to pull the plug on that and focuses on continuing g4 equestria girls since the main g4 ended, i be happy because there were holes hasbro forgot to fill. I know this ain’t about equestria girls and all but i’d really want that show to come back cause I really miss sciflash/pony flashlight and I’d rather see that happen and see sci twi dump timber rather than continuing her relationship with him and thank goodness im not the only one who feels that way. Anyway, this is how i feel about G5.

I'm kind of hoping it's the prequel/warmup for a much thicker plot and more developed characters in the series. This could be kind of similar to how equestria girls/G4 MLP movies gave some context for some of the characters which came onto the scene but aren't known in and of themselves to have the best character development/in depth plots. That way these could be more than filler, but not necessarily set the tone for the series when it comes to the lack of plot/development. Maybe it could also be a final test run for the producers to see what adjustments are and are not warranted from the original g5 film. I'm trying to be somewhat optimistic because I really don't want Izzy to just become a Pinkie Pie clone or Hitch to become the goofy/clueless dad portrayed in comedies. Argyle in the movie set a good standard for how males can be shown to be capable father figures and Izzy was goofy, but not 100% out to lunch in the film. She listened and was able to use her creativity to come up with solutions for her friends concerns instead of always being celebratory/wanting to perpetually make others laugh.

To me the 3D is fine for Hasbro getting into 3D shows again. I think they could do a much better job with the environments though. There needs to be a bit more style and flair especially with the effects and colors they use (mainly with the cloudy skybox they used and colors looking flat and pale) and the animation team needs to flex what they could do within the time they can use with this being an animated special. Hasbro needs to show off again what they can do with 3D animation in tv because they were legends with Transformers Prime before doing more cheaper looking shows afterwards. Now we have The Bad Batch and the same team from the Clone Wars on that 3D He-Man MOTU show giving them a run for their money.

just watched the first episode on netflix and it was all good, the story made sense (mostly) after the film, but like you said, the animation is not that great. So much so, that the bad animation was so obvious and made it hard to watch, I had to stop watching mid-way through the episode. I might pick it up again in the future but currently I'm not too close to the MLP fandom or franchise as much as I was back in the early 2010s in some scenes, i noticed that characters would occasionally just clip from one expression to another very quickly without any inbetweens at all (e.g. Izzy looked sad and almost.. tired in one scene and then when Zip flew into the scene, Izzy immediately went to a happy and excited expression with little inbetweens and no other expressions. would have looked way better if Izzy would not noticed Zip until she heard Zip talk and take a while to look at her as she talked.) Also, sorry if im not explaining this properly, english wasn't my first language

It looks horrible. MLP is a huge comfort show of mine that helped me through a lot of hard situations growing up. I was really really looking forward to g5, as MLP was something that kept me going for many years. Something I knew I would always look forward to as new episodes came out. I wanted that for g5 so badly. The movie did not disappoint me. This does. Unfortunately, the fact that g4 is over is something I'll have to accept and try to find other things to enjoy.

I hafta admit, the whole we have to be harmonious every second of the day, or they'll lose it all over again. The way they do it is overkill and ridiculous. Oh well, I seriously haven't been invested in pony media since Tails anyway.

Didn't Izzy's VA change between the movie and this new Netflix show? Also, she's not as fun and exciting as she was in the movie, she seems to be... muted. None of the characters seem to have their flair like they did in the move (except Zipp and Sunny, for some reason). The only think I don't like about the models is their coats. It doesn't look like short fur anymore, instead it looks like a solid color with no detail.

I wonder if g5 will be about recovering what happened to the magic during the time of twilight and just before the movie. Maybe they go on quests to find ancient artifacts and learn about all the g4 characters including non ponies. We already had friendship is magic so now there has to be a new message That’s how I felt about Izzy and hitch too! Netflix should of never gotten mlp. They ruin everything

G5 really sucked all the soul and wholesomeness G4 and even previous generations had. It's just sorta sad to see the sacrifices that the mane 6 made become forgotten in the future.
