Oh that's fine, the whole point of film criticism is to be critical. Even when people don't agree it can open discussion. Also at the end of the day its your opinion so its right for you. I liked it too which was a great relief. I hadn't gotten on the hype train but was still nervous it was going to be a disaster. I miss ponies on the screen and it was reassuring to see them get so much right.

I absolutely agree with everything you said! I wish we saw more of Zipp and Pipp; they both really needed a duet or something! Funny how on promotional material they say Zipp like science but that isn't mentioned at ALL in the movie! Overall though its a fun and cute movie despite its flaws and it's definitely a film I'll be coming back to from time to time (side note: this movie is better than Raya and the last Dragon lol).

i would say its somewhat mentioned in the movie; when she takes them out of the dungeon into the room w/ stained glass, she mentions she comes down there often as shes standing in front of a blackboard filled with chalk calculations, and then she hops onto the wind machine (which i assume she built, since there would be no need for it at the time the station was open) :)

It's just not one of her prime character trait, so she may be a low-key brilliant type of pony and doesn't have to tinker and invent and experiment and expose all of that all day. Maybe her sciences only comes to needing to solve how to fly with just a strong gust of wind and no magic.

I totally agree that the 3rd act could've been better, especially the ending. I felt that the conflict between the pony races got resolved too quickly, and Sprout got off way too easy, he didn't even get a slap on the wrist. Hitch being against dressing up in the song despite doing so in Zephyr Heights was indeed kinda weird. I also think that Pipp could've gotten more screen time, but I'll let that slide because I'm sure they will address that in the series. What I feel it should've been in the movie though, is Pipp's character arc of acceptance. She's upset in one scene and the next (campfire) she's already bonding with Izzy and being all happy. Of course we can assume she warmed up to the idea off screen, but still.. it's almost like a scene was cut. Hitch's arc felt more natural. Besides all of that though, I loved the movie, very funny, cute and enjoyable. Great visuals, animation, voice acting, and good songs. I really liked the score too.

I think the whole bring magic back thing was about the leaders coming together, like the whole windigo story happened in a similar manner, as it was the rulers of each tribe and their direct underlings that made the healing, and bonding, just saying.

He could be seen as a sort of "unofficial leader" by the ponies in Bridlewood. His status is just not as obvious as Mayor Phyllis or Queen Havens

Speaking of the windigoes we were talking about that early in the movie and my husband agrees the likely reason the whole place isn't frozen over is Twilight saw the ponies getting into an irreparable fight and sealed their magic so they didn't draw the attention of the Windegos until they could come back together again.

Honestly, it could’ve been more fleshed out, the characters and the world both. I also understand that this is basically a very first episode to the series being made based on these characters. So hopefully it will get better at this point. Overall, it was adorable, and fun to watch. I will definitely watch it again here and there. 7/10 for me personally.

My one gripe is it's never really explained how they got to THIS point. Like princesses, alicorns and friendship between the races was literally what made the world function but suddenly everyone in the world 'forgot'. How far in the future are we really? Like 200 years? Pretty sure the function of the world and diplomatic relations are a bit harder to forget. By tying gen 4 into all of this they shot themselves in the foot but rather than explain what happened to cause such a MAJOR change in the world itself they just....ignore it. Didn't Pegasus literally control the weather in some parts of the world? Wasn't Unicorn magic a major part of functioning cities...cities that were interacial? How did everyone just forget? Was there a war or a fight of some kind? Did the magic just poof? If so there must be stories from when it disappeared and why that would literally throw the whole world into chaos. I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!

I always thought of Hitch thinking the disguise Izzy gave her at first with the make-up was silly to him, only because it didn't fit his charismatic preference. That's one reason why he complained. The other one complaining was Zipp. And maybe Hitch and Zipp shared sentiment in this scene because they feared they may get ridiculous costumes, who btw Izzy basically was the sponsor and the way she decorated her home and built her crafts may have given them awkward signals already. 😅 If Hitch is into cosplay, then MLP Fever have already said something right, that he didn't need suggestion from anyone else. This is true especially when it simply clashes with his masculine taste hinted at all the ensemble he wore for the pictures in his calendar. 😆

I suspect this movie was made by teams and the team in charge of act 1 and 2 didn't mesh well with act 3, winding up with the rushed ending. I would have loved if the unicorns had matched Izzy's song, being snooty and pretentious. I also would have loved a scene where Pipp confronted her mom and said 'she is doing this all for us. She has nothing to gain from us learning magic." A scene where Pipp used her social skills to get to the unicorn crystal would be good. Zipp, I suspect, is a rebel princess. She doesn't like the plan her mother has for her, doesn't want to be queen, and is interested in just doing her own thing. Could have been more explicit, but I think I picked it up.

I just don't understand why they wanted to make this movie a musical so much, the songs feel very out of place sometimes, like, in musicals, usually there's a WHOLE buildup before the characters jump into singing, first a tune starts playing with no song, then the characters says a few lines along the tune, and only then the character starts singing. In this movie... one second the characters are talking or moving around, and suddenly there's a cut in the scene and music starts playing and they start to sing, I don't even remember most of the songs because they were so quick and out of nowhere 😆 But I really liked the movie, it is a great start to Gen 5 as a series and I wanna see where all this is going.

One of my great gripes with this film too! 😅 They all just suddenly singing way too abruptly, which heavily contributed to majority of the people's takeaway with how flawed the pacing of this film has. Hearing the songs and seeing its footage on its own is fine and entertaining and very rewatachable, I give them that, but yeah I will never forget how I hated all the musical sequences in this film in my first watch because of how poorly they transitioned the dialogue scenes to the musical ones. 😅

It's there in the 1st Frozen and then Tangled the Series, and even all of MLP G4 (Pinkie Pie being the earliest victim in this), so I kind of don't mind the sudden jump. My gripe usually is just my first watch reaction. I actually love all of the MLP G5 movie songs after many rewatches, and they're all in my head 🙂 I guess I'm just waiting when musical scene transitionings are done masterfully like how it used to be back in the Disney's 90's films, so it'll be better received even in people's first watch. 🤔

You've got most of it right, though I feel like you've over looked both Zipp and Pipp. It's true that the movie didn't have much for them to say or do, but there are subtle moments that can be picked up later in the tv series! 1. Both Zipp and Pipp's flying style are very different, Zipp loves to fly more stealth, while Pipp loves to fly more like a show off. 2. Both Zipp and Pipp's personality also has a bit of Rainbow Dash, Zipp's a bit more confident and also has a little bit of Twilight's love of science as seeing in one scene. Pipp also a bit of Rainbow Dash's personality but instead of being confident she's more of a show off, and she also has a little bit of Rarity's girly side. 3. Then you got to look on how both of them reacted to both Sunny and Izzy. Zipp's reaction is that's she's really interested in them, so already she's more braver than her sister Pipp, not too mention each time she's around both Sunny and Izzy I get the feeling she has a mischievous side to her, I did read somewhere she had a rebellious side to her so that could explain it. Pipp on the other hoof, she seemed to come off as rather bratty sassy, and a bit spoiled at the start though as the movie progressed she quickly liked crowd. To me, Pipp in this movie was probably the weakest out of the Mane Five she doesn't do much or say much in this movie other than she loves the crowd. So again, you do got part of it right so here's hoping that they've fix that in the up coming tv series!😊

If the story was seperated from g4 I wouldn't be as ticked with the movie, but because it is, it makes it feel like the writers want the cake of g4s success, but have their own story beside it, which doesn't work in its favor. You cant establish yourself in a set universe if you don't want to adhere to its rules.

This film was made way better than the g4 one was. And Considering that this is the pilot for g5, I expect that alot of what seems to be missing from this will be addressed in the series that comes out next year. As for the science stuff that Zipp is into, we do get a glimpse of that we the girls are at the balloon station. As Zipp is standing in front of a blackboard with scientific research about the pegasus wing on it.

initially, when seeing the gen 4 ponies, I could see clearly how their personalities and designs correlate with their cutie mark, however, while watching the movie I find myself trying to decipher half of their cutie marks and how that correlates with who they are. The villain- or most likely "antagonist" was really weak, he was defeated quickly and the main character became an alicorn. I wish they would've taken things from g4 and worked it into the plot, the refresh of everything just isn't for me. There was a lot of unused material from g4 that could've been worked into g5, and it would've made the movie a whole lot better, and saved the writers some trouble. Old mlp fans would enjoy seeing some old references or maybe even old villains from the g4 show, that would be really cool. When the ponies wouldn't get along I remember the reference of an eternal winter? oh man would that be just awesome. an eternal winter would've been so much cooler than their abilities being taken away, and its illogical, just cause you're racist to other ponies shouldn't really affect you physically, and there's no direct explanation on WHY that happens anyway. I get g5 is a separate tale from g4 but come on, if lore from g4 would make this a better movie why not use it? because this movie was kind of a flop from a perspective of a fan of MLP. (I'm not really a brony, just someone who was an avid fan as a child) the movie is okay, but maybe if there were more writers who cared about MLP, there would definitely be an improvement.

Overall I think that this movie is pretty good! It's sets up a good possibility for more to happen in the series. Though I do have some issues. Like, if this is set up some time after the G4 series finale, and all of the ponies lost their magic, then how come they all have cutie marks? Evey time we saw a pony loose their magic, they lost the mark or it was replaced with something, like with Starlight Glimmer. What happened to Twilight and everything she did prior to her reign, like the school or connecting the various kingdoms to each other? What happened to Discord, Flurry Heart, Cadence, Celestia and Luna? What caused the ponies to all lose their magic? I'm sure that this could be answered as the show progresses, but if they don't establish what happened between the ending of G4 and the beginning of G5, it's gonna become a confusing mess of contradictions.

The film was kind of upsetting for me since they switched up the mane 6's personalities and put them onto new characters of a different race.The movie kind of plays out like a fanfiction and while some of the characters like izzy are adorable and amazingly done in 3d,a lot of the characters lack a real individual personality that doesn't resemble their gen 4 counterparts in some form (ex.pinky pie and izzy,rarity and pip,rainbow dash and zip).I loved the humor and care put in but the movie kind of fell flat for me.It also raised a lot of questions I just couldn't get over like "If a pony had a child who came out as a pegasus because their grandparent was one to a non pegasus set of parents did they just ship them off?" "How did the ponies get their cutie marks without magic?" "How do they get food if they all live in three individual cities without farmers?" "Who takes care of the sun rise if Celestia is gone?" "What happened to cloudsdale?" "If they're all the mane 6's descendants does that mean that the elements of friendship are a genetic thing?" And "where did all the ponies go? Because there's only three cities we see,two of them having very small populations.So,did they have a pony nuclear war or something similar?" I know it's stupid to ask the questions since it's a kids movie,but I just want to know.

This being a pilot movie for the eventual series does suggest that the world will be expanded and the sisters will get more screen time the way each of the mane 6 in gen 4 got. So to add a minor criticism to your point about the lyrics of Pipp's song Glowin' Up The line "We can't fly like we used to" stands out to me personally as since the whole facade is supposed to be that the royals can fly while all the other pegasi can't, yet Pipp says We in her song not You, blatantly admitting she can't fly either Though I agree Zipp should've had both more screentime and at least a part in one of the songs Another interesting note It's Pipp who says she knows a way out of Zephyr Heights after they steal the pegasus Crystal, that Line would make more sense coming from Zipp who's implied to have snuck out multiple times Hopefully all these problems and more are rectified by the series going forward.

IMHO the rating is around 6,5in a scale of 10. To put it short: PRO: The passing from 2D to a convincing 3D world The hommages through action figures and Twiilight Stars to previous generation, plus obviously the musics. Nice songs and nice to add a male character as part of the main cast ( shipping battles incoming) The nice touches of modern social media influence especially the Pegasus city The new main character being an Earth pony genius and the Unicorn being a combination of Pinkie pie weirdness and the skills as fashionista of Rarity. CON: Too many songs (i hoped at one time to see Starlight Glimmer appearing as cameo and say we get we get it, we don't need the whole song to express your feelings) No real villain (and no good villain song to make it worse) , only a jerk too much cared by a dominant mother, and no explanations why not windingos and the casus belli of the division of the three races ( The evil triumvirate from G4 escaped perhaps?) and who takes care of rising the moon and sun? Weak third act with so many cliches about losing the mcguffin device and having the epiphany and convenient device just in plain sight What are the special gifts for Earth Ponies after the restoration of magic? It is a nice try with the 3d, it only lacks that sense of wonder among fable and legend of the beginning of G$ wit the Nightmare moon lore for example, we shall see it how it will evolve

I’m not even a huge mlp fan at all but the new characters bother me because they all seem to have the same type of design except for Hitch and the short haired Pegasus (Zip??). There doesn’t seem to be enough diversity in their personality either. Except for the tomboy Pegasus, all the girls seem to be bubbly and optimistic just with varying styles of how they dress and how confident they are. I haven’t actually watched the movie because I don’t think I want to spend money on it, but just by hearing things and seeing scenes it lowkey bothers me that the new group of friends is nothing like the fairly diverse ponies from the Netflix show.

Like they never name the main six and don't know anything about them but Sunny has toys and stuff dedicated to them and no mention of if Eqestria still exists? I mean twilight literally became the new full time princess, so you’d think they would have a record of that or that there would still be an alicorn princess or something. Like if g5 is in the same universe as g4 then what happened to all that? Where did the alicorn princesses go? Who raises the sun and moon?.. Idk which direction they’re going for with g5 but it seems like they’re going for the younger audience first again.

This video and the comments give me comfort, I was starting the think I was the only one that thought it was a bit underwhelming. The thing is also, it wasn't just the three pony tribes that where mixed during Twilights time on the throne. The Changelings, Hippogriffs, Kirin, Dragons etc where also mixed in with them. What happened to all of them? Also technology normally comes about due to inventors. Which means what Pegasus inventor accelerated their technology to the point beyond the Earth Ponies and Unicorns? Are they still alive when the series takes place? That would be interesting.

I do agree. I love the movie, the animation, the music, the characters, I love most everything about this film, and I'll likely watch it again and again until the series comes out, but I just felt a bit cheated when the movie was over. Something was missing, plotholes were made, questions about what happened between now and G4, I want everything to make sense, not just love it because it's fun, likeable, and beautiful to watch.

A big adventure usually brings people together, I'm sure their friendship will be more developed in the series and the ponies will actually get to know each other but from experience I tend to find myself getting along with people naturally only if me and them are sharing the same experience like at my school camp where me and a group of random students got lost from everyone else, we bonded because we all were stressed and all had the same goal, to get back. Some of those students I got to know afterwards properly and now am really close with them.

She needed the other ponies to go along so they could learn it too. We already saw what just her saying "We should all get along" by herself got her (nothing and nowhere). By having the adventure together they learnt to trust each other. It was not a matter of Sunny alone knowing the other ponies had to get along with each other, it was the other ponies learning it that was important too. Dragging two princesses along brought the leadership of the Pegasus into it and the battle with Alphabittle (the de facto leader of the Unicorns) dragged them into it too. So now we have the leadership of two of the main sides beginning to see how dedicated Sunny is and that the pony adventuring group as a whole is getting along despite all the prejudices and that maybe things have been exaggerated. Then finally at the end the earth pony leadership gets it too (Phyllis, not Sprout). Its easy to say "Well Sunny could have just stayed at home and all of this would have happened anyway" but I am not sure that is true. The music did suck though (G4 was amazing, I love you Daniel Ingram) and yeah, Zipp and Pipp got short changed on screen time. It is a pilot to a TV show though so they will probably get more time to shine there. Also I think Sprout didn't get any comeuppance because how can they keep him as a soft antagonist in the TV show if he is in this times version of Tartarus? (speaking of Tartarus, I wonder what happened to everyone there with all the magic gone?)

I was so annoyed by the comedy, they frequently undercut the sincerity of various moments with some kind of goofy over-exaggeration for the lulz. I like how you mentioned the voices, I think making them sound more like real people takes away from the whimsy of it all. The 2017 movie did this to a lesser degree too, it's like they know they're making a movie and not a Saturday morning cartoon so they direct it more like a traditional film. That might be fine for some but I want more of the sense of the fantastical when I go to Equestria. Hopefully the show is better.

The beginning was nice but it was easy to write as they bet on the nostalgia that the film relied on overall. The scenes that went beyond that were mediocre at best and I thought the finale wasn't very good even for a children's production. Regarding how they set up the world. For ,,friendship is magic" they broke the logic. When I first watched G4 as a 13 year old I was worried they were going to go the way of the mediocre cartoon that friendship is the ultimate source of magic which for a couple of series it seemed like that but luckily it turned out they wanted to take it in a more natural way why having a good relationship with everyone around you is a good idea which is not only great in that it educates the kids but also makes it better for older people to watch. I saw G1 as a 7 year old and I don't remember them pushing similar elements into the story forcefully there either, even if qualitatively it wasn't anything special. Yeah, the dance scene was definitely the point where I was like...what even is the point of this again? Like we KNOW she has to win the third time, so it was more of just seeing where it was going than trying to guess what happens next. Also, you do bring up a really good point about how the magic being restored seems arbitrary. Like, it made sense to me at first, each of the three leaders has to agree to be friends again, but looking at the film again, it really doesn't touch on that nearly enough.. At least the songs were good! I also really love the connection to G4 this movie had. Made it feel like we had a scene a far distant past that was unspoken of. I really do wonder where this generation will go next though, considering magic is now back. Hopefully, we get some lore about the three crystals that were in this movie and why they were created. I honestly did like how even the third crystal didn't work actually. I just didn't really care for how Sunny literally right after figured it out. I think keeping the audience guessing a little bit more would've been a good touch.

I think that why magic wasn’t restored right away was because the main characters were already more open minded. When they were able to convince other close minded ponies to come together, thats when magic was restored.

The world of MLP Gen 4 is perfect, the world, it's inhabitants, the character designs (their names, attitude, powers, cutie mark, back story), their objectives, direction of story, challenges faced by characters, EVERYTHING is perfectly put together and well thought out. Though that's kind of impossible when the movie mentions that equestria wasn't ever like this before in the movie. Also there are way to many unanswered questions and I think one major retcon when it comes down to these new magic crystals that affects each races magic. I'm sure they'll try to explain it and even affirm it's existence in the coming series. The thing that makes me uneasy and even angry about the plot of this movie is the absence of the existing plot from g4. The only thing that ties g4 is the mane 6 being something that Sunny and her father remembering. But some how everything that happened in g4 basically was for nothing. Again I understand this is for a new audience, but to me the new writing team completely or willingly forgot what happened in g4. I mean it's kind of comical in a way. What happened when Twilight toke charge? The apocalypse? #FalloutEquestria

My main complaint was that it felt... rushed. With that first song with Izzy, she could have said something that was just a bit emotional and the song would have been so much more natural. It would have been nice to see a bit more of the difficulties of the travel and not just "yep we're here!" and the last bit is that in the just dance game, not only is Sunny up there instead of, I don't know, the pop star?, but she just suddenly gets incredibly better with two rounds of being absolutely awful. Other than that, it was a pretty good movie, many laughs were had

My complaints were the cutie marks were only on one flank instead of both and they used their hooves as hands instead of using their mouths and it made it odd to me. Also, their deffinetly should have been more songs and I did like a lot of the movie, but I agree with you about the ending.

If I may add my two cents, there IS a reason why the three "big ponies in town" (Phyllis, Haven and Alphabittle) joining together in accepting friendship was pivotal to magic returning - they're the LEADERS of their respective factions. As seen in the Heart's Warming Eve episode of G4, ponies put a lot of importance in the actions of their leaders, and when they act, they follow suit (they're a herd, after all). So, if the three head honchos say Friendship is Magic, everyone falls in line. And no, I'm not talking out of my pootis - if you noticed, when Sprout, moron as he is, elected himself Emperor (with the uncertain support of the previous leader - his mother Phillis), everyone fell in line just like that. ...okay, this puts a VERY negative light on the pones...

You know, for being the "very distant past", given how they already have what is close to 20th century tech in G4, their technology sure didn't advance much if this was centuries or millennia. If I'm entirely honest: First impressions so far are that G5 MLP is looking a lot like what Transformers: Beast Machines was to Transformers: Beast Wars. How Beast Wars took Transformers following its G1 and made it more epic and more than just a shallow toy commercial for a specific gender is comparable to how G4 redefined My Little Pony.

The movie looks good in all, characters are decent art style is decent. But if it's meant to be a sequel to Gen 4 then the Lore breaks that have apocalyptic implication need to be addressed. No magic means no food, no weather or uncontrolled weather, no day and night cycle which would cause freezing and burning of the planet except for a small area. Not to mention since friendship isn't all magic they shouldn't have lost their magic.if they did wouldn't there be giant beasts that want to eat them that they can no longer defend themselves against? Magic being an external thing tied to a crystal that can easily be broken or stolen makes no sense. Magic is a naturally generated power by the ponies and is not externally generated, nor is it all the magic that exists in the world or tied to friendship directly. (Sombra for reference, doubt he had friends). Unless the actual show retcons the movies story, then it can't be a Canon sequel to the fact that these ponies wouldn't exist or their world to be more apocalyptic do the lack of food ,good weather ,and so on . Of course no one pays attention to this stuff, and the movie continues to get perfect ratings cuz people don't notice stuff(or care apparently). A sequel should build off the lore, the world, the world building, and rules. Otherwise the sequel isn't true sequel it comes off as a company trying to ride the coattails of a successful franchise and not actually trying to make a competent sequel that actually makes sense. This would have been better if it was a completely separate from generation 4. But at least the art is good . Gen 4 wrapped up so well and so neatly it didn't need a direct sequel. ,(At least not one like this)

Oh, I do love your very objective review. This film is very beautiful to look at, and I was one of those that was actually very impressed with the quality of the 3D models of how detailed it is, and then later how expressive it is. I'm glad MLP finally leaped into producing at least one expensive big screen 3D film. The Disney-princessy angle of the character's style kind of works for me within a 3D environment though. If G5 later adapts a 2D style for its TV series, I bet they will get a stylistic overhaul to a degree, like maybe we may get to see these characters with bigger, rounder set of eyes instead of the almond-shaped we're seeing now for example. 🙂 And for Hitch when it comes to disguises, I guess the simplest way which we can make sense out of him is that he has taste. He basically doesn't want a look that tarnishes his masculine charisma, and what was Izzy offering at first was a full blown make-up looking like a silly clown 😅 which really didn't matter in the end cause what he got to wear was just a sparkly horn.
