During the show, it wasn't known until the end who would be "facing off", so the groups would have to work up these collaborations ahead of time not knowing if they would be required to perform them. Voiceplay and Home Free were never up for elimination together, so never performed this during the show. However, they had so much fun with it that they decided to do it as their own project after the show. For the best showdown of the show, watch "Home Free vs The Filharmonics - I'm Alright - Caddyshack".
@wendischambach6181 Жыл бұрын
As I recall, the other "Sing Off" elimination pairings seemed kind of competitive with a lot of back and forth. But Filharmonic and Home Free made a collaborative performance that was not competitive as much as a flat out great performance. It showed and paid off because I think the goal was to eliminate one group from each pairing but both Fil and HF survived and both groups out of another pairing were eliminated that week.

My favorite battle from the Sing Off is Home Free vs. The Filharmonics doing "I'm Alright" by Kenny Loggins (Theme from Caddyshack). The Filharmonics tried to get them to move a bit more, as they'd been pretty stiff on the stage. Not only is the sound great, but the performance is wonderful.

Might I suggest that you watch both Home Free’s and VoicePlay’s journeys on the Sing Off…they were on the same season (Season 4). Home Free won the season, VoicePlay placed…5th. This was done after the show…both groups had to prepare it during the show in case they were in the bottom 2 and had to battle. And they did this song on tour. The Sing Off Tour was Home Free (winner), Filharmonic (4th place) and VoicePlay (5th). I think it was VoicePlay’s idea for them to do a video since they didn’t need any preparation…each group was filmed separately.

Honey was only part of Voice Play for their performances on the Sing Off. This video was made because the battle never made it on to the show. So Voice Play and Home Free decided to produce it independently because they had so much fun doing. The ad you saw at the end is not Honey Rochelle but Emoni Wilkens, an amazing voice as well. Voice Play has done several video's with her. Another good battle from the Sing Off is one between Home Fee and Filharmonics doing I'm Alright. Love watching your reviews keep up the good work!

Sing-Off required VoicePlay to have a female vocalist. They asked Rachel Potter but she was busy on the X-Factor and doing well there. They got Honey and I think my favorite of what they did was Play That Funky Music. This one was slated for the show but VP was no longer on the show so it was done with the 2 groups in separate locations. Worked well. When they went on the Sing-Off tour, Honey bowed out and Emoni Wilkins (Wicked) took her place.
@brendasorenson6186 Жыл бұрын
The producers for the Sing-Off had many "requirements." HF needed/ asked to be country, VP needed to add a female voice, and knows what else. They also wanted a couple singers to be highlighted or to be lead singer in each group; hence Austin was the main vocalist followed by Tim. Rumor has it that the producers wanted Austin to sing Colder Weather, but HF went with Rob, who was better suited for the lead. The judges focused primarily on the leads (with an occasional nod to the beat boxer) while ignoring the rest of group. (In HF'S case, Chris was ignored.) They also had the groups practicing 7 days a week with almost no downtime. Really, in Chris Rupp's History of Home Free videos, HF describes their Sing-Off experience much better.

Much like Pentatonix was more or less forced to get a base, although Avi helped them a lot he never had the same goals or vibe the other three had, Voiceplay was told that the show felt they would be more marketable if they had a woman. If they had been able to get Rachel they would probably have won, but Honey was an independent act and continued to treat the team as her backup singers... you notice almost none of the scene stealing we have come to expect from Geoff. I wish the show had been sponsored by someone who really knew Accapella music, if you watch clips where you see the judges you will quickly note that all three were fairly well known musical faces, but none from the accapella world.
@lrfcowper Жыл бұрын
Some of the executive meddling paid off -- it was The Sing-Off that pushed Home Free to go country instead of just another generic Midwest a cappella group. Of course even there they wanted it to be the Tim and Austin show, and HF had always given the lead to the person they felt fit the song best, meaning all four singers were lead singers. They butted heads with the execs over Rob's lead in Colder Weather and basically told the execs where to go. I think they had the ability to do that because they didn't really need the win. They wanted it, but not at the expense of compromising their group dynamic. VP and Honey didn't really have time to mesh before they were thrown together on the show. There was no time to find their footing, and I expect more than a little meddling went into the song selection and arranging. We never really got to see VoicePlay on the show, only The Sing-Off's vision of VP.

Honey was associated and worked with Roberts Flack, a great singer. . She is primarily a solo singer. She was recruited by The Sing-Off producers to sing with Voiceplay in the competition. Honey has a very distinctive voice. Unfortunately, during The Sing-Off, Voiceplay was kind of reduced to back up singers to Honey. In contrast, Home Free had three lead singers, although Austin was the primary singer in the competition. Also Tim's bass was featured especially with Ring of Fire. There was no featuring of Geoff's bass during the contest. Home Free fans say that Tim actually helped Geoff to develop his bass during the competition. Home Free never expected to win the show. Then when it appeared that Home Free might win the show, the members of Home Free debated among themselves whether they actually wanted to win the conestt and be tied up with a record deal. A record deal isn't what many people assume that it is. Besides The Sing -Off competition wasn't that cut throat as the producers wanted it. It was more like Acapella camp with all the groups helping each other.

This is by a rather wide margin the best thing (and, probably not a coincidence, also by far the most theatrical thing) that VP did in connection with the Sing-Off or while Honey was with them. Honey was (probably still is) a talented singer, but for whatever reason VP did not make particularly good use of her talent. At this point in their career, VP was accustomed to defining themselves as a group in terms of their theatrics, which they were used to exercising in the form of musical skits like Road Trip, Auditions, the Chicken Song, and so forth; and at the time, they couldn't figure out how to turn that stuff into the 3-5 minute pop songs the show runners wanted, so instead they just tried to sing like all the other groups and got lost in the crowd. The show even handed them the category "movie song" on a silver platter, and instead of doing anything theatrical at all, they picked a random song that had been used in a random movie nobody cared about and did an acapella version of it, which ended up being the most forgettable thing VP has ever done. They could film themselves standing in line at the grocery store and it would be more memorable than that number. I've watched it three times. All three times, I completely forgot what the song even was within five minutes after watching it. If they'd done Poor Unfortunate Souls with Geoff as Ursula (even without the makeup and costuming and post-editing effects), or Hoist the Colours (again, even without the amazing make-up), the judges would've been scraping their jaws off the floor, but no. After they competed and lost and went on the Sing-Off tour and it was all over and Honey moved on to other (presumably vocal) endeavors, Tony had the idea for their Phantom of the Opera video, which, if you haven't seen yet, you really must. THAT set them on the path to being what they are today.

Honey was a friend of the group, who joined them for the Sing-Off because they wanted a female voice. The only other VP thing I know she appeared in is Just Sing, which is awesome.
