The actual story behind this song makes this song more amazing. There was a beautiful, popular girl he had a crush on in high school that didn't know he existed. Many years later he's famous, he's playing a show, that girl shows up to see HIS show. Even though she was there to see him he was terrified from the moment he saw her and was still too terrified to speak to her, he still felt like a creep, like a weirdo. The girl never knew about the crush and likely still doesn't.

He is wrong about that. There are two copyrights at play with a cover. The song is copyrighted, but a specific recording also has copyright, which in this case Prince owns. They can both claim copyright, and subsequently Thom York cannot demand that Prince forgoes his rights. It's also a bit hypocritical of him. Radiohead has always been very adamant about copyright, even being the first band to use copy protection on their CD's. That's their right, but Prince has that same right in this case.
@ziggythedrummer5 ай бұрын
@@jbird4478 this may be correct for the covering artist's own recordings (say, if Prince had done it in the studio or arranged the recording of his live performance), but I'm not sure it applies if an audience member records a live performance which isn't being "officially" recorded. I believe he's not just singing for himself. When he sings, he's giving his all for everyone who's ever connected with the song. Even to hear "you are special" just doesn't fit in that moment. It's for everyone who feels like an outsider, it's for everyone who feels rejected, it's for everyone who feels alone. He's singing for them. He's singing for you. And that beautiful wailing at the end is proof of that.

I remember when this in the MTV "Buzz Bin" (which was how MTV intro'd new, up-and-coming bands back when MTV actually played music videos.) This was the song that intro'd Radiohead to the World, and they are one of the only surviving bands from that class of '93 alongside Tool. So many great bands from that era--Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, etc.--have gone by the wayside or lost key members, but Tool and Radiohead have endured.

So I can see that when Radiohead came out with this song, I am not surprised that it became an anthem for teenage self- deprecation. I know you get especially excited when the performance is live because as you say perfectly imperfect which makes the performance that much better. Thom has definitely proven he can hit notes perfectly. You can find live recordings where his technical precision will blow you away. But to use painting as a metaphor, often a loose brushstroke is much more powerful than a tight one. And dancing around the note can be more interesting than hitting it. And when he does hit it, it's that much stronger.

They are such a staple for a reason and even if they don't 'sit' well' and can be a difficult 'first reaction', I can assure you there is meat on these bones, no matter what you hope to get from music. The lead singer Thom Yorke, and also Robert Plante were both big fans of Jeff Buckley. You can sooo see that here with Thom's emotive singing, and the build to that vocal crescendo, he was highly influenced by Buckley. Wheww! What a live performance! There's an interview of Robert Plante saying he was amazed the first time he saw Jeff sing. You like perfectly imperfect singing that is 100% passion straight from the soul? I suggest Jeff Buckley (live performances like "Lover You Should Have Come Over" or "Mojo Pin". Him and Joe Cocker are the purest soulful singers in my book.

Covered by Prince, which is high praise indeed from such a prolific artist in his own right. Also a standout in one of Starlord's mixtapes: ie Guardians of the Galaxy...

Fantastic performance, despite the cold weather. Singing about insecurity, while bravely soldiering on through the weather, to a point he even holds and corrects notes he went off key in. Do the thing. The show much go on. Completely vulnerable while also being completely a pro. Brilliant.

I was made to feel this way by someone and I dedicate this song to them. This is a song that has meaning to me and that long note is a release of that emotion.

I have been catching up on alot of your first time reaction videos of so many.. this month and last month.... loved the video most of all... Five finger death punch.. wrong side of heaven, as I can relate as 100% disabled veteran. You said you love variety of music and would love to see your reaction to a group I don't think you have reacted to yet. I just seen them in concert for the first time on Aug 2nd and was in awwww.. they have been around and have been underrated ... they are sooo good... please when you can get the chance to react to them the group is: The Funeral Portrait. The 2 songs I love most are: Voodoo Doll & Suffocate City. I look forward to watching more of your first reaction videos.

If you ever get the chance to be in the audience and see this performed live, it's a pretty amazing, possibly religious, experience. Their shows are fantastic but this song just hits big for the entire audience and Thom is absolutely in my top ten favorite rock singers of all time.

Love Radiohead, Thom Yorke is a legend. Best two piano players Thom Yorke and Tori Amos. They can really move you with those keys in some of their songs. You should watch his live performance of "Analyze" and "Bloom". And watch his live performance of "How to disappear completely". You might be put off by some songs but if you love good music, definitely give their entire discography a try and maybe some time... if you get turned off, leave it and come back to it later... you will find something that really resonates with you...
