196 | EP60 | So the music album is dead? Not so argues John Patitucci
To many musicians making an album has always been the epitome of their art, but with digital streaming taking a hold of the industry, do full length albums still matter? That depends on who you ask! Having recently released the first live album of his incredible career, John Patitucci has put together one of the standout recordings of 2022.
In this episode, we quiz John about his need to still be making albums, the basses he’s played over the years, his chance backstage meeting with Jaco Pastorius, and his Italian tour with Chris Potter and Brian Blade!
In this episode you're going to learn:
How John’s ‘Live in Italy’ recording came together.
Why creating a full-length album is still one of the best things you can do for your career.
How John was reunited with his Ken Smith 6-string bass.
Why he was crestfallen having met Jaco Pastorius.
And much more!

This is what real music royalty looks and sounds like. Humble, funny, excited as if he were a child, no bragging, so down to earth. You don’t need to brag if you’re John Patitucci.

Mind officially blown, I am crazy busy lately so it took me three days to listen to this in entirety. Please bring in more artist for interviews/ bass conversations like this. Inspiring to say the least. The piano, the Smith, the Yamaha, , the upright, the stories, educational pointers for both playing and composing….

Always been amazed by John's music but I'm probably more impressed now by the quality of his spirit. He's a good man.

Wow what an interview boys. When he got up and walked barefoot to his piano and proceeded to play an absolutely gorgeous melody with notes y’all gave him…I fell off my couch

Thank you for interviewing a bass legend! John is one of my primary influences on the bass! I dreamed about owning a Yamaha JP1 in high school. I now own two JP2’s and they are my favorites! Absolute beautiful tone! Another World is still my favorite album! Thank you John!!

I saw John live with Wayne Shorter in 2009. It was a tribute to Miles Davis concert - 50th "Kind of Blue" anniversary. Amazing!

Regarding Earth Wind & Fire, what many don’t realise is that Maurice played drums on many many tracks throughout the years! Fred was their credited drummer for a period, and Ralph later became their Live drummer, but Maurice played on many of their studio recordings, often not credited as drummer!

I saw John live way back in 1998 when I was only 14. I was new to the world of jazz and it was all fresh and fascinating to me. He was playing with the legendary Roy Haynes at the time and the great pianist Danilo Lopez. Little did I know what kind of legends I was witnessing.

I find it very hard to absorb that John is complaining about the electronics of the Ken Smith , because I grew up listening to him with that bass, to Me, That’s the Sound I want to hear from him! Those early recordings!

This was great! John P was talking about that ex gangster that did work in Chicago during the Al Capone Era. Apparently I'm somehow related to AL Capone. I know my grandfather immigrated her from Italy to Chicago in the 20s and was affiliated with the mafia. I never met him or even seen him, but my dad and grandmother told me stories.
