Dude a Steelix was what helped me win my run of that game haha. Don't doubt it. Also as late game comes you might want to have something that can remove terrains and change the weather to something that's less favorable for the enemy.

All my starters sucked and I was stuck with tangela my first run. Then I caught a gligar in the same run and was able to catch a shiny gligar with great IVS in the safari zone that I changed to have an adamant nature and poison heal. He and a Naganadel I caught that I gave modest nature and a choice scarf were absolute HARD solos in my run. Even when I upped the difficulty lol. Only other mon I tried (so far) that came close was mega aerydactyl

Another key mechanic was the huge variety of interactions that systems such as spells, items, and monster intrinsics had with each other. The modern hyperfocus people have on its permadeath aspect is comically narrow and excluding a game because it lacks just that one while including totally different games more or less solely because they have it is silly when you consider that the genre is named for "being like rogue," which absent the nonsensical modern connotation makes Mystery Dungeon seem like the obvious choice if you were asked to pin the label on either it or, for instance, the new Pokerogue.

To be clear, there's been a pokemon roguelike for 18 years (17 if you are considering the japanese releases) That being Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. So if you never played a rogue-like beyond this one, I would VERY MUCH recommend the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. They got an awesome story.
