Here's some inside information on a joke Colbert makes in this interview, as I was in the studio audience that day: After Colbert gets the egg on him (a little after 3:00), he says "I'm excited I have more than one suit." The reason the audience went so wild at that line (because it's really not that funny) is because before the taping of the show, Colbert does a Q&A. The first question was from a lady who stood up and asked him "Why do you wear the same suit every day?" The audience (and even Stephen) all laughed at the question, because of course he doesn't wear the same suit every day. Stephen was so flabbergasted, and could barely get his words out. He explained to her that he doesn't wear the same suit every day, and how he had worn a grey suit the day before, and today was a blue one. If you watched this episode live, you may have noticed he came out in the beginning before the monologue and said something like "We have a great show tonight, and I'm wearing one of my many suits." I can't find that line on the internet, but it did air on TV.

I think Colbert kept it classy at the end while also asserting his control and dominion over his show by taking the skelly-hands himself and placing them on his own face. That idea had a vague, Dadaist potential, but also had an undercurrent of the slob guy delighting in trying to get away with murder on TV. He should go do this to Oprah or something, sure it'll go over just great.

Hell, he could have donned a pout, and with very low energy pull out a red clown nose, put it on, honk it, take out the pie tin and cool whip, fill it up, slap himself in the face and go "Happy now?" As long as he played it up and looked committed to the gag, whatever narrative arch it might play in the long run, it'll at least be mildly entertaining.

TJ Miller has said in calm, relaxed, normal-person interviews that he loves doing early morning news guest slots and talk show slots like this because he treats it as like half-comedy half-performance art. @DannyWilliamH9 жыл бұрын
Not like that. Miller has a shtick but he was trying too hard and the egg thing was clearly not planned by both parties. The guy is annoying when trying to hard and this is an instance. Colbert didn't seem mad but like he lost respect for him as a comedian lol. Shows put out feelers for guests but most are booked by agents of the guest. I'm sure Colbert was thinking of all of the people they turned down for that moronic 5 mins.
@DannyWilliamH9 жыл бұрын
+Chris Hill Dude. I don't dislike Miller. He's been solid and I've mentioned here that he was fine up until the egg. You can even tell he was thinking twice about doing it as he's looking for it. Colbert isn't Carson, btw. I'm glad he's not. Either way, he was clearly unimpressed with Miller the same way a teacher is with a student thay thinks they're brilliant, etc. Like him or not he's not a comic genius or avant-garde or whatever. He's a dude that often tries too hard and often bombs when he does. He's better when he's just being himself and the clip is a perfect example of that. Even a fan has to admit when this was lame and cringe worthy, dude. David Cross is my favorite comedian but he has given a million great interviews and a bunch of clunkers. That's ok as it doesn't validate me or something haha. I can admit when he bombs or comes across like a moron. No sacred cows, dude.

Here's my take on it. Things were a little weird for 3:33. At this point, TJ makes a joke and looks at Colbert, who does not laugh at the joke. This seems to anger TJ, as seconds later he interrupts Colbert mid question. This leads to some awkward exchanges as Colbert offers a chance for them to stop conversing (possible hint to TJ?) Stephen attempts to restart the conversation but yet again TJ interrupts at which point Colbert quickly decides to give up hope and reaches down for the skeleton hands, which is TJ's last act. You can see the look of despair and failure on TJ's face as Colbert reaches down for the hands but he has no choice but to perform his final act and end his brief appearance on the Colbert show.
