@@MM-nl8ci I agree with that! Also, I think the main point of this undercosumption trend is to be really mindful about what you buy and to avoid buying things you don't need. I see a lot of people still buying a ton of new makeup while doing project pans. It leads to majority of their makeup getting neglected and eventually most of it is going to expire. What I like about this underconsumption trend is that it challenges you to buy less.
@Blondehottie3214 ай бұрын
@moniquetibble2309 the term underconsumption also refers to all other items in your house, car and workspace. When it comes to clothing a person might continue to wear a tshirt with fraying edges because it still works as a tshirt. Or someone might continue to use a blant can opener. It might take double as long to open a can but it still opens. It can be seen as living on the poverty line. It's much more than just project pan.

I think ideas of minimalism / underconsumption romanticize your lifestyle in a way that feels different than “normal / average”. Giving it a name makes it feel purposeful, intentional, and special to the person doing it rather than it feeling like a default action. I love only having one/two of each makeup product, it makes me feel like a cool / it-girl with her signature products. But in reality it’s probably what most people do 😂
@Blooprint3943 ай бұрын
This is such a good point! I think this desire to feel special is deeply rooted in our psychology. This is literally what effective branding and marketing is preying on, when we are advertised products that try to make us feel special. Romanticising a lifestyle or certain behaviours is basically the same thing. However if we choose to romanticise the right things, we can essentially positively influence ourselves. It's essentially "hacking" our psychology. I love the example of the "it girl" with her curated collection of makeup btw. It sounds so fun :)

Anyone who tells you powder products that are a year old are expired is overreacting. If your powder products are kept outside the bathroom and used with clean brushes, they should last for years. Even if the formula deteriorates, for example, the pigment has gone drier and less opaque, you can still revive them with a tacky primer and by wetting your brush with setting spray after loading your brush with product. I’m using palettes and blushes from the time of the 2017 makeup boom, and they’re still going strong. If germs concern you, you can spray your makeup with isopropyl alcohol (which is also great for cleaning your brushes) . The only indications that a product is no longer usable is when it smells bad or the formula separates. Edit: if your mascara is dry, you can revive it with eye drops.

Great tips, Kelly, but I dare say this is just panning your products or making sure you have empties before purchasing something new. It's funny that the internet needs a fancy term for "normal people behavior" to be seen as palatable or trendy. It's like when outfit-repeating videos were becoming a big thing, when for the vast majority of history, folks only had a few garments they would wear constantly before repairing, repurposing, or passing onto someone else. Before overconsumption became the norm, it was very unusual to throw out perfectly usable materials without first attempting to make them work for you. In any case, in this economy, frugality is a virtue. If the term "underconsumption" helps us learn that lesson, by all means, embrace it 👍

Love this video!! One thing I wanted to add, is it's important NOT to mix anything else in with your sunscreen!! If you mix it with moisturizer, foundation, serum, glow drops, even water, it is likely to disrupt the fragile formula and you will not get the SPF promised. Let your skincare soak in before sunscreen, and let your sunscreen set/dry down before moving on to makeup! (You didn't mention mixing anything with sunscreen but I always like to share the PSA 🙂) I've been on a journey to use up what I have before buying more makeup, and oof it is hard! But it definitely has me reconsidering when I want to buy something new, especially for big things like foundation or eyeshadow palettes, because I know they will probably expire before I could ever use them up. I'm team mini mascaras only haha.

I tried your suggestion for taking out stoppers, and there is a ton a product left in there! And the mascara works way better than the way it was originally! That makes me wonder if mascara function is also a product of how the stopper works rather than just the formula and the wand. I have another tip for eyeliner/marker tips! So very often the reason why more product won’t come out and you think you’re out it’s because the tip gets clogged with other products (powders, oils from your skin etc). If you spray it with a brush spot cleaning product (eg cinemasecrets) and then gently rub the tip on a microfibre cloth it will magically start working again! I imagine a wet makeup wipe will work as well though I haven’t tried it.

I have been doing this for years! I use wooden coffee stirrers, plastic spatulas from Ulta or Sephora, or last drop type tools to get everything out. I use long handled makeup spatulas to remove shampoo, conditioner, and lotion from the bottles. I scrape every bit of lipstick from the tube and put it in a clean empty old eye shadow compact. Bonus if it has a mirror! It is a great way to carry your favorite lip shade(s) in your purse-just make sure you have a lip brush for application. I also cut tubes of certain products to get the last bits out (not toothpaste). I squeeze as much as I can out before cutting the tube. Using needle-nosed pliers to remove stoppers is best in my opinion. Underconsumption isn't just for makeup products. Remove the pour spout from liquid detergent. You will be surprised how much is left. Companies want you to throw away the container with product left in it and buy a new one. Over the years, I have saved my family a lot of money by not wasting the leftover product. You can also decant some liquid type items such as conditioner, shampoo, shower gel, lotion, etc. from the old container to the new container. Travel jars and bottles are great for containing the remaining amounts of product. Perfect for your next vacation or overnight trip. This is not a new trend for me, it's a way of life!

I would also recommend cleaning your tool well before removing stopper...

Great video! Over the past few weeks I’ve been turned off of makeup videos because the message seems to always be ‘buy buy buy’. Love the tips you gave. I’ve been making my own cocktails of primer and foundation for a while. I know the latest push has been single shade eyeshadows but it drives me crazy that the recommendation is to go buy a new single shade. Just whip out an underused (or regularly used) pallet and use a just one color

My favorite cream eyeshadow dried up, so I added a drop of glycerin and stirred it up. Good as new!

I’m so glad this got recommended to me - you remind me of how chill, practical and nice a specific side of the YT beauty community was in 2010. It’s so nice to learn some extra tips (I knew some but never attempted to re-press. I might do now!) & have less emphasis on brands “and this is the brand. This is what you need!!” Etc Thank you!

I absolutely love that you make these kinds of videos! I enjoy listening to you when I’m doing my make up in the mornings. I hate when the video is over though. Keep them coming! You have the best ideas!

One item that helped me a lot with using up my makeup is a metal spatula. I can remove the stoppers and scrape product out of the bottle, or destroy the powder finely for repressing. I also use it for jar creams to avoid putting my fingers in it. A very worthy tool😊

All of those tips i used to do it all! Especially back then when i worked part time and didnt want to spend another $10 or $40 on a product so scooping everything out gave me between 3 days to 2 weeks which is great so i have enough product until next paycheck 😆

Mascara brushes can be also sent to wildlife animals rescues. They clean tiny babies with them.

When I was little, I used lipstick as blush! 😂😂 Also, it works if you use a liquid lipstick, particularly a moussy one. ❤

I’ve been using powder highlighter on my shoulders and collarbone for so long, I love that trick! I actually purchased a bunch of shimmery body oils when colourpop came out with their SOL sister brand and I literally never use them cause I prefer just using my powder highlighter, it’s WAY less messy and goopy and easier to apply. Also for rejuvenating dry mascara- drop in 1-2 drops of eye drops in and mix with the wand. It’ll be good as new!

All of these suggestions are gold! For removing stoppers, I tend to use the edge of scissors to lightly work and jiggle the stopper up. Then the tweezers can have a space to remove the stopper without overly damaging it depending on the design. There are also makeup spatulas/scoops on the market that can help. For repressing powder, scraping the powder out onto wax paper or parchment paper and then putting it into a small wire tea strainer. There are even some that come with a bowl rest that you can let the product fall into. I work the powder with the end of a makeup brush or metal makeup spatula until the chunks are gone. Then I'll add the powder back into the pan in layers, pressing and spraying it with 91% Isopropyl between pressing until all the powder is back inside. If wanting to press a loose pigment, you can use TKB Mixing medium or Isopropyl Myristate. Your suggestion about mixing the powder products is perfectly wonderful and how some folks in the Repanning community make new shades with the formula of a brand they love.
