You are 100% right. But it was definitely like two different bands VH with diamond Dave, and VH with Sammy. Both great but I think the biggest difference was Eddie wanted to play more keyboards in the VH with Sammy. But I saw them live both with each one and I prefer live with Sammy better, but the actual songs on the album I prefer with Dave because they were harder rock and Eddie was playing the guitar harder when Dave was the singer

You were talking about his guitar....it's a Steinberger guitar. they became sort of iconic in the mid-80s. A lot of people were using them back then. The point of the guitar was to reduce weight and balance it perfectly by removing the headstock completely and taking as much off the body as possible. It also has a rather unique adjustable tremolo system on it. In fact, this song would be all but impossible without that style of tremolo. They were cool and forward looking but a lot of players couldn't get past the strange look of them and they fell out of favor in the 90s. Recently, that style of guitar has made a small comeback and there are other companies making them now.
@woodch2 жыл бұрын
Eddie was probably one of the biggest guitarists playing one, too, which made it a big deal. If I remember right, they were hideously expensive, you had to buy special strings with balls at both ends, and if you didn't maintain it with the same discipline you would with a weapon, then it will fail you like a poorly maintained weapon. I always coveted one, especially when Vito Bratta started playing one-- it was just so futuristic and sounded so awesome.
@RaeWilliams2 жыл бұрын
Van Halen was the complete package for sure. Eddie IS the guitar hero of all time. He is using a pick for certain parts of the song and doing finger tapping on other parts. The guitar is a TransTrem equipped Steinberger which can transpose up and down depending on the players desire. Eddie pulls it off masterfully - like no one else. RIP Eddie.

Listen to those vocal harmonies! They make the song! Back when Dave and the boys first started playing clubs in the early 70’s, Dave said they did not have keyboards, horns, rhythm guitar, etc. to fill in their songs. So they had to really learn how to do 3-4 part vocal harmonies! What an amazing musical contribution and a true American treasure!

Van Halen's guitarist is the G.O.A.T of guitarist and in a concert he would go through UK p tut o 25 picks because he would switch back and forth between using his pick and "!tapping" which he didn't invent but he was a wizard at using it in between the other ways that he would play.

Everyone loves the Charvel based Franken-Strat or his Earnie Ball signature models, but if I could have one of his guitars, the Steinberger is the one I'd want ... they were an awesome guitar made entirely out of composite material with a tremelo that would stay in tune while being used (instead of detuing like most tremelo bars do).

To comment on the guitar, that particular guitar is a Steinberger headless guitar. The tuning knobs are down by the bridge, and the whammy bar system is designed to where all strings descend or ascend tuning wise to where they go up or down together. It’s like if you strum a chord on that guitar, then depress the bar, it’s like the whole chord modulates pitch wise down to whatever tune with the sound of that chord remaining in tact. That’s the only tremolo system you can do that with
@GuyNarnarian2 жыл бұрын
The guitar he was using is a special Steinberger guitar that has what is called a "trans-trem" so he could play the song in two different keys without switching guitars. He used it on a few songs. He does use a pick on a lot of it, I think he fingerpicks the beginning and definitely has some tapping riffs in the solo, etc. You need a pick to make that killer scrape sound at the beginning.

Side note on the EVH guitar, EVH had the Steinberger and invited Peter Frampton to play it , the difficulty is you can lock the tremolo in anyone of several keys to play easily, Frampton said he just couldnt get a handle on it and EVH picks it up and goes No like this, then play this way, and give the guitar back to Frampton. Frampton said he was just lost at it, EVH was just happy to show a guitarist his new guitar.
@alexzarvis69492 жыл бұрын
Amazing song written by Eddie right after he got the new novel headless guitar (Steinberger), it has a tremolo that locks in tune to multiple keys just by positioning and locking the trem bar. He figured it out pretty quick and wrote summer nights. In the beginning and end of the song you can hear him raise and lower the key of the song in real time, which was basically unprecedented at the time. Yes this is nerdy info, but it is reality and porn to musicians like me. Oh, and Eddie is using a pick, if you look carefully you can see him holding it in his mouth when finger tapping, and grabbing it when not. This is also a standard practice among modern guitarists that tap or alternate fingerstyle. Rock on in heaven master Eddie.

Van Halen has a deep catalogue of great music. For some suggestions of songs with David Lee Roth at vocals, I recommend Mean Street or Unchained (personally I prefer the studio version). For songs with Sammy Hagar on vocals I recommend Dreams, Poundcake, and the music video for Right Now. Given your prior reactions I am confident you will really like all of those. During this song Eddie goes back and forth between using a pick and tapping on the fretboard without one. You might have noticed during the video of the eruption solo that he tapes picks to the guitar and tosses them into the crowd when he is about to tap. Lightening fast reflexes. Pure genius. Thanks for all the great content.

That little guitar was a Steinberger Trans Trem G2. It was given to him by Steinberger around the time the band was working on the "5150" album. It's not a regular guitar. It has a plastic body and is outfitted with active electronics. But Eddie thought it was cool and because he always saw types of guitars that were different than his as something new to create something unique with, he wrote a pair of songs with it (Summer Nights & Get Up) for the album.

That guitar rhythm is just epic! There's a reason they call Eddie Van Halen the king of rhythm because he had riffs for days! Apparently there's a whole bunch of unheard material from him and his brother that is uncertain on whether or not we'll ever get our ears to indulge, it's all up to big brother Alex. And that guy may never show his face again!! He lost his brother, a brother he never left the side of. According to Wolfgang, his uncle was the one in charge of the band, to what extent I'm not sure, but I'm almost willing to bet just about every aspect. Alex, may have seemed to be a nice guy in interviews and I'm sure he is on a personal level, but I can really see him crackin the whip when it came to business, and if I didn't have to I wouldn't want to mess with big brother Al. I've heard that Eddie was one to wanna scrap too if you did something he didn't like. Look up his quarrel with Limpdipshit! Eddie took a fuckin tank to that guy's pad and told him to hand over his guitars that he had left at his place and was supposedly not going to give them back to Eddie!! I can just see that right now. I'll bet anything too that it was during Eddie's dark years
