My gripe with the more recent AC games is that they don't feel like genetic memories anymore. Why not just make a new franchise that's connected to AC instead of using the animus premise without really committing to it? I remember how grounded AC1 was. Every mechanic has an explanation that ties it in to the fact that it's memory being simulated through the animus
@peacemaster81175 ай бұрын
It'd be a shame to keep doing the same thing, right? The animus mechanisms change as the animus technology changes. Black Flag isn't animus-based at all, you're a playtester playing a videogame based on the genetic memories of an assassin. Origins and Odyssey both rely on portable high-powered animus tech that creates weird glitches, like fighting the Gods of Egypt.
@sleepyhyrule68945 ай бұрын
This is how I’ve get since Odyssey.
@gemgem-hl7ii5 ай бұрын
@@peacemaster8117 They don't have to keep doing the same thing. I just wish they made it more grounded. Yes, the animus was improved and became more powerful, but I find it hard to believe that all of Greece can fit into the genetic memory of a single person. Like, did she go in every nook and cranny of Greece? Maybe they could have made it the amalgamation of genetic memories of people from different parts of Greece and explained it as such. Also, the point of the synchronization bar is that if you do something that is not in-synch with the ancestor, it will deplete the synchronization bar. That's why killing civilians and getting hit (yes, the ancestor is really good at fighting that he/she doesn't actually get hit) deplete it little by little and going to a place the ancestor never went to results in imminent desynchronization. And remember how the previous games are divided in chapters called Sequences, which represent fragments of genetic memory sequences? That's gone now. The newer AC games don't even feel like memories anymore. I liked AC Origins and AC Odyseey, but they just don't give you the feeling that you're in the animus. Even the modern part of the story feels unnecessary, unlike in the older games where the modern part is well-integrated in the story and it actually feels like it's the main plot and what you do in the animus is just a driving force for that plot.

The problem with Yasuke is that the only notable thing about him is that he's black. He's not there for any other reason than his skin color. And he was so uninteresting as a character to begin with that they had to exaggerate his involvement and importance in the setting to make him somewhat interesting. But we really know why he's there - it's pandering and to push a current-day message. There were so many other far more notable characters - actual Japanese men - they could have used or modeled after instead. You know, people who are actually written about in books and have statues made of them. And just because some of the later entries were not historically accurate does not give them a pass to keep doing it. The entire selling point of Assassin's Creed is the historical immersion. If you don't have that, why are we playing these games? Other games do the formula so much better in non-historical contexts. I don't know how people can be immersed playing as a 6-foot-5 black samurai who is supposed to hide in plain sight like this. It's asinine. It's just not the feudal Japanese fantasy that people wanted to have with Assassin's Creed. You can't have that now. The entire narrative changes by playing as this character, as you stick out like a sore thumb, not to mention would realistically have very different interactions with the locals than any other native Japanese male samurai would.
@BroBomba6 ай бұрын
This. The fact is that Yasuke is really only remembered for being a fish out of water rather than anything he accomplished while in Japan. A Japanese man with the same history would have been long forgotten by now. I'm not against romanticizing the idea of him, or even producing works specifically about him, but he should not be upstaging a Japanese man in an Assassin's Creed game set in Japan. He would have been fine as a side character, or even a prominent character, just not one of the MCs.

This is why you are wrong. Please tell me the historical significance of Ezio, Edward, or Arno or any other AC protagonist. You can't, why? Because they did not exist. Ubisoft made them up. You could even say they "exaggerated their involvement". Now you have Yasuke, a guy we know was a fish out of water and nothing else, hmmmmmm a fish out of water that seemingly disappears from the historical record sounds like the perfect building block for a character in a series about an ages long conflict between two shadow organizations that don't appear in historical record. You yourself said part of the appeal is historical immersion, what's more immersive than playing a character that we know just enough about to know they were real but enough mystery to fill in the blanks? You're right though, a big guy dressed in all Samurai armor will stick out and won't be stealthy. That's why they created a whole second protagonist that is literally a Shinobi and clearly displayed the Samurai being a melee focused non-stealth character. More than anything this comment and many like it just go to show how deep seated your racism and prejudice truly are. Simply the existence and centering ( even though it's still a shared protectionist role ) of a (real) black person to you is "pandering" and trying to push a message. Get over yourself and be better

I think what is really funny about the Yasuke drama is that compared to pretty much every other AC protagonist Yasuke still is one of the most accurate depictions of their real-life counterpart. Most of the AC protags are completely made up and the ones that are real usually are just some normal guy. Yasuke was a retainer for a Japanese lord, and retainers were roles often held by samurai. So does that mean that Yasuke was for sure a samurai? No. But ignoring the fact that this isn't even the 1st time Yasuke has been represented as a samurai in a story, it still makes his depiction in this game closer than virtually every other AC protagonist. Side note: the controversey on why or why not he should be considered a Samurai also doesn't really track anyways. Because what is confirmed is that Yasuke was appointed to Guard Obunaga, was given residency and payment. He was for sure a "warrior" but the argument is whether or not he ranked high enough to be considered "samurai". And if we are being honest, people aren't getting upset because the new trailer hinted that Yasuke was inaccurately given 2 swords instead of just 1, or that he was given a fief instead of a residency. He's wearing armor, and using weapons like a warrior and in a fashion that we associate with the term Samurai, in which case historically Yasuke fits that description.

Yasuke being a main character is just super disrepesctful to the Japanese. In a historical setting characterized by the struggles, triumphs, and failures of Japenese men, it's clear what message is being sent by hand picking the only black person, a footnote in history who we barely know anything about, as the hero. Plus, it appears Nobunaga is going to be the villain, most likely. So they've got a plot set up to have a black man triump over a figure beloved by the Japanese. It's actually comedic that they've done something this on the nose. This would be like making Assassin's Creed Zulu, and then having a white main character set opposite a villainous Shaka. This is just as bad as that would be.

I’m just tired of games going for woke points. Yes these games are a work of fiction but historical fiction isn’t just pure fictions, it’s sprinkled with historical facts. For example Leonardo da Vinci was a painter but also an inventor. He dabbled in engineering so when he was the guy ezio went to for gear upgrades it made sense. Ac3 had George Washington in it where he was still the first president and a revolutionary fighting the Brit’s. Yasuke was just the first black guy in Japan. He was a retainer, and exotic pet for the shogun because he was so shocked by his skin color. That’s all there was in his history. Plenty of historical Japanese people on that time they could have used for this game and they chose that one black guy. Women could not be Shinobi but they made sure we had our female character to play so we have our black samurai and Japanese women. You can’t spell woke points any easier. Everyone knows why they did it and it’s not because it would make for a cool story lol. They did it to get those sweet woke points for black rock money or what ever investor they went with. You will never see them do this to a game based on a black setting.

Caesar wasn't killed by an Egyptian spy. Yet those inaccuracies are just part of the AC formula at this point. The games are bad because of Ubisoft's greed, not because they hurt your feelings with their choice of characters. Also Nobunaga wasn't a shogun, so your whine is just as inaccurate.

Like the people could be from the areas and they've built that into the narrative. "It does a grave disservice to the Japanese people to have a non-Japanese person play the role of a Samurai given the context of what a Samurai was in those days" is the feeling I get from the conversation in the community. The Japanese gamers aren't very happy about it either; an AC game finally in their country and they give the role of Samurai to a non-Japanese. It's just a bit tone-deaf, ya know?

1. Yasuke dressed in full on battle armor in a city of commerce, which I assume a trading hub. Samurai’s do not wear that in a peaceful city or that setting. 2. Yasuke was taken as a “Kosho” by Oda Nobunaga. Kosho’s were sword/luggage holders at a very young age for the major warlords. They were almost like butlers. They could become samurai when they grow older into service. Yasuke never had a chance to become a samurai because just one year into the service, Nobunaga got killed at honoji. 3. Continued from point two, Yasuke never saw action in battle. At least not as a samurai, sword fighting other samurai like portrayed in the trailer. Warlord campaigns lasted for months and years. Yasuke only served for 1 year and never again. He was so unimportant in the history of Japan that there was absolutely no record of him after his lord got killed at Honoji, so why would Ubisoft pick Yasuke as the main character? 4. At the very least, this is the first main Japanese AC game in the series, why is the main character not Japanese?

FYI, the rank that Yasuke had was actually part of the samurai, which all were vassals to their lords, so that is not actually a stretch of history, there's not just a lot more known about him apart from that.

It doesn’t have to be historically accurate, but it should be respectful of the culture it is portraying. I am Asian and I am offended. That’s obviously just my opinion, but I think in this case, it matters. Instead of getting a white savior, we get a black savior, us Asians just can’t help ourselves…lol

I don't think they are 'massaging' the historical record. It is likely (as agreed by most historians on the topic) that Yasuke, a respected and armed retainer of the most powerful man in Japan at the time, was considered a Samurai. Of course they will be taking creative liberties with his story but they have not distorted history to do so (essentially, they are filling in the gaps as very little is explicitly known of Yasuke).
@tehbeernerd6 ай бұрын
Regardless of the history, it’s a ploy for Ubisoft to get people talk about literally anything else, because it takes the heat off of their awful recent run of games. Nothing like ginning up discourse to make people stupid.
@petersimonsaba6 ай бұрын
@@tehbeernerd It was probably them trying to differentiate the game from Ghost of Tsushima, which had just come out when they started development. The distraction and diversity element are more likely to be side benefits. Keep in mind it is the developers who choose the story - I doubt they would have planned ahead for Ubisoft's failure in the subsequent 4 years.

@@theastralwisdomYou must have a lot of hay with the strawmans you’re making. Assassins Creed has always had the native people be the main playable character in the time period they’re set in from a demographic speaking stand point aside from Revelations. Having Yasuke and a Japanese woman be the only playable characters and not a Japanese man was very much obviously decided due to ESG and DEI initiatives that have minority quotas for black people only than genuine creativity. It’s extreme pandering. Yasuke was never a samurai. Assassins Creed has always tried to look and feel as authentic as possible with some obvious sacrifices for gameplay reasons aside from the couple previous entries which had more mythical creatures incorporated. If you’re going to be ignorant, at least try to educate yourself beforehand as to why people are really upset. We want to be a Japanese version of Ezio, Altair, Edward, and Connor set in feudal Japan without ESG demanding minority representation because they’re too fragile to play as someone typical from this era.

That is an insane take. You can do that with any other AC game. "If you take out the assassinations, there's nothing Assassin's Creed about black flag" And before you say "that's not the same thing, that's a key gameplay system" Naoe is the players way to engage with those systems in this game
@deltafive_o-first24175 ай бұрын
@@gbohunm.i You misunderstand. What Im saying is that specifically in this trailer if you just leave Yusuke there isnt really anything that says AC. Theres nothing about him that indicates hes an assassin. No hood, no blade, no Assassin logo even on him, no mention of the creed, no brotherhood, and even his target has no Templar logo. It doesnt need all of those but it should have some to make him feel like hes an Assassin. No your thing isnt the same because you escalated it to the whole game. Im just talking about the problem with this trailer and the current presentation of this character.

@@deltafive_o-first2417 There wasn't anything overtly Assassin-y about the guy in Origins either, and that game was pretty good. If you removed Connor from AC3 there'd be nobody who looked Assassin-y. Why's it a problem if Yasuke doesn't look like an Assassin? Who cares?
