If the aliens are meant to represent the rich it is probably just as horrendous as a story except the author can excuse himself of racism maybe? The rich and powerful of society are not a solitary race, they were not handed their caste from altruism and live amongst the working class. Inevitably this manga will result in a message of “Desperate circumstances lead to desperate action, oppressors should not oppress in society or else bad things will happen, watch Joker: Folie à Deux.” I would love it if this story was about class dynamics instead of weird fascist shit! I don’t believe in an eventual plot reversal of “the MCs were crazy and weird and bad and unreliable narrators” either, because what does that then say about the entire first portion of your story? Well, at almost every turn the violence and xenophobia is meant to be justified, but do not engage with the ideas and characters placed in front of you or you have failed morally. You should have known better not because the story led you to wonder what is right, but because you should have known beforehand. Well, it should be obvious that the main characters are bad, but then why make this story other than to..rugpull hitlerites who read Shonen Jump? Stories are rarely written from the perspective of an unrepentant nazi or racist murderer while the reader is provided minimal subtext to think something is wrong with their convictions. Compare this manga’s beginning to the start of Attack on Titan, American History X, even Jojo Rabbit. I’m sorry mangaka of Drama Queen but I don’t have faith in you to turn this into something revolutionary, I don’t think stories are given a structure like that for a reason, and the reason is that it would be bad.

I was basically going to post something similar to this. In this story we aren't really shown any other characters being oppressed by the aliens so far, and the one assassination contract we're shown was by a human who ran the same scam as the alien they were contracted to kill. So the problem with the anti-capitalist/anti-rich read on this series runs right back into the same problem as the "it's racist!" read does: the only characters portrayed as being in the wrong are the aliens. There are still humans who thrive under the system who aren't portrayed as being wrong, and absolutely nowhere near to the same degree as the aliens are. The characters are upset that a different race of people are at the top, essentially and yearn for a time when their race was at the top instead, and don't actually give a shit about fixing the problems in their life which wouldn't measurably change whether or not it's aliens or humans punching them in the face.

If you really pay attention, there are a lot of moments where the characters were portrayed as horrible. In fact, YOU DON'T need to pay that much attention, is fairly noticeable, that shouldn't be brought into question just because they have justifications for them selves. Following the perspective of an evil character is gonna do it, is kind of a given. I think there's room in the story to have it both ways. It could have a lot of aliens who are bad and even give credence to the conspiracy theory, being orchestrated by the aliens on top. But also have good ones, innocent ones. It already happened! What the fuck did those 5 aliens from ch 2 do to anyone? lost their license? They didn't do anything, but they died because of their race or species. You can have the characters fighting against a corrupt group of aliens while also being evil them selves. Cus at the end of the day, they are racist. Whatever the case is, I SINCERELY hope this keeps going, cus I'm entertained, and let's be real, this is NOT hurting anyone. Alien Lives Don't Matter, they're not amongst us. lol

being African and seeing all major chains or stores being owned by people that aren't from your country made me view the manga differently. I was still aware that people would probably view it as a weird racist story. I don't agree with the message of kill the invaders of your country and all that. I also know Japan isn't a developing country so the mangaka probably would not write about neocolonialism and how it looks in the modern day. Also the whole "they get special treatment" line reminded me of a corruption case where foreigners could set up and run businesses without needing to pay as much as they were meant to by bribing politicians. again no violence against foreigners just want to make clear. The most annoying thing about the manga is how it exposes how a lot of anime fan like to infantilize Japan. Let me explain. A lot of anime fans sees Japan as a place where there isn’t no politics at all. Which mean there’s no politics in anime/manga Which makes no sense as just like any country. Japan has a history of having a side of conservative and progressive. Been discriminated against and discriminate other people. TLDR: Stop acting like Japan is this magical utopia where it’s just big titty wifue. Just like other countries- it is own country with a long complex history. Sorry if that doesn’t make any sense.

Tbh the main vibe the aliens gave me were colonizers more than anything. A group suddenly showing up and taking over a land that didn’t originally belong to them, and rather than living alongside equally, change the way society works there to have it completely revolve around and they’re at the top, while not really caring for the natives. And while it’s just one example, we know there are at least some element of things like segregation in this world, like with the apartment complex only for Aliens, that seemed to be built just for them. This doesn’t justify what the main characters do, I don’t think the perception so many have about them just being foreign immigrants is right. The anti rich one to a lesser extent because the more I’ve thought about it if that is meaning, the more I realized that “eating the rich” is being taken very literally.

Having heard people claim immigrants get "special privileges" many times from hardline anti immigration people, to me it really just came off like the author using that far right talking point and making it actually true in their text. @TheSpeedPlays
@TheSpeedPlays 10 күн бұрын
Reading the first chapter, I can understand the anti-immigrant sentiment being come across, because the dialogue certainly gives that off. But, I get the sense the author was for an anti-american influence specifically. When Nomamoto says she guesses she likes the technology that came from the aliens, that is a very common historical analysis of Japan post-WWII. I think what locks this in though is Kitami's backstory of an alien doing a hit and run and killing his family in the process. Last year, there was a case of an american serviceman in okinawa that hit a japanese citizen on a public road. Granted, that serviceman was prosecuted by the american military, I can imagine there would be sentiment among japanese citizens that the serviceman should be prosecuted by the japanese court. Maybe that was the mangaka's intention, but with the rest of the chapters out, maybe that still is the underlying message but the main characters just haven't gotten to that point yet. Kitami's comment in chapter 5 of being "invaded" and he "loves this city" reads to me like someone who does have legitimate class grievances but doesn't have the class consciousness to make that realization. I agree this story is much better read in the leans of the poor eating the rich as it stands though. There are only 5 chapters out through so the story basically hasn't started, so this really can go anywhere, especially with how the main characters are presenting their problems. I still stand that I don't think this is a general anti-immigrant sentiment underlying though.

It's a marketing ploy Jump is notorious for axing series before they have room to blossom, so manga now have to come out of the gate running to avoid getting cut, see Kagura Bacchi and Dan Da Dan. I do find it insidious that this series is using anti-immigration talking points in a shonen (young boys) magazine rather than a seinen one, where the reader base might have wiser reading levels to not just take the protagonists xenophobia at face value. However in isolation it's pretty funny in a "South Park" kind of way and I'm willing to hold my thoughts until more chapters come out.

I'm not sure the idea it's a class analogy works considering their special privilege is based on race and that the depictions or concerns of the characters don't involve rich humans. If the aliens disappeared, the class system would stay the same but there wouldn't be a group that has social privileges based directly on their race. I'm ready to bet the author isn't necessarily expressively racist, but it seems pretty obvious to me that the story mimics the kind of fascist theory of the great replacement, where immigrants are slowly overtaking a country's population by acquiring special privileges while trying to neutralize the culture and population of that nation. The aliens are at most neutral in their depiction if they're not violent or rude, with their ridiculous appearance, so they probably work as a place holder for an invading force where the protagonists can have a reason to kill without seeming like the most massive psychopaths but it plays into the symbols and language of far right ideology, as do other works out there that weren't created as propaganda

this plot is WIIIIILD, im probably gonna keep up with it solely to see how off the rails it goes- which could be the point, it could just all be a marketing thing. its entirely going to hinge on whether or not these characters get critiqued, end up as outcasts, etc. if its solely an "eat the rich" metaphor like how the vid describes, i think that by making the aliens a specific race, it's WAY too easy to substitute the metaphor for a race/foreigner one. don't even think media literacy could be an argument there, if the mcs end up being framed as justified any metaphor has flopped. if it were up to me, this plot should go the route of showing how the mcs are directing their anger at the wrong sources, bc its not a specific race or type of people thats creating poverty, and directing your anger at your peers and neighbors rather than actual oppressors, like the companies that choose to pay you unlivable wages, or a broken justice system, will always lead you nowhere or worse. i think it's reasonably possible it could swing that way, but we've already seen them both say they're fine being in it just for the love of the game, so im not entirely sure, again it's gonna hinge on if the mcs get framed as justified or not. either way, as everyone has already said, it's an utter train wreck you cant look away from

Honestly I been keeping up with the series just to see how bad it gets but lk the vibe I get is that it *is* about xenophobia to a degree but it gives the vibe that it’s showing how absurd that mindset is. The way Nomamoto and the other one are presented make me think this is one of the stories where you’re following the villains/monsters, especially so for the guy (I don’t feel like remembering his name) cuz his backstory and reason for hating aliens genuinely feels like a ‘tragic’ villain backstory…and nomamoto is just insane good for her. Plus the fact that all the aliens so far do bad things that could or explicitly are being done by humans (ex: their first target huntaway) or in the case of black hair’s victims after chapter 1, didn’t do anything at all, I just get the vibe the manga is going to show how absurd xenophobia is over the course of the series, or at least make it clear the protags are the villains of the story. Even more so considering there’s another manga in Jump+ that also has elements of xenophobia but explicitly in the antagonists so far and certain things in drama queen are almost mirrored in that manga but in a much more obviously negative light (the manga is ‘Yattara’ btw it’s extremely good so far so I recommend it) I could be completely wrong tho maybe it is just promoting xenophobia or ur right and it is about eating the rich guess we’ll see

Drama Queen is in jump+, not the main physical magazine, jump+ has so many more manga that fly completely under the radar than even the smallest titles of the main magazine. It's incorrect to say being a jump property got Drama Queen significant attention when the magazine it runs in is so much smaller, the controversy is by far the main reason how so many people learned of it, being jump is almost inconsequential compared to that

tbh last semester i had to research a lot about puerto rico and it's relation with usa. it's the first thing that popped into my mind, it's crazy and a bit scary how many similarities it holds. i feel the "eating debate" if you could call it that, is ridiculous since yeah, you have two sociopaths and you expect them to be heroes? these type of stories about colonization and the class disparity caused by it are gruesome, and drama queen isnt even THAT bad. i had to analize "amalia" by rosario ferre and that sure is, worse than just some canibalisim, hate and violence

I would agree with this and maybe I will once the manga’s finished but as it stands it’s the fact that a whole ass human is doing the same shit the alien is yet they could care less what the human does. The fact they are an alien is the only driving force for killing em, so as much as I want money and class inequality to be the reason for the characters hate it’s looking like a stretch. It feels like an excuse for the characters to justify their actions. With the obvious fact that japan still refuses to recognize anyone who doesn’t look Japanese (including the ones born and raised there) as Japanese also makes this manga fishy. Until they acknowledge the obvious imbalance of hate in this manga I can’t agree with what it’s doing. There’s just too much focus on the aliens and how bad the aliens are that the “message” of eat the rich is completely lost. The only way I can see this manga not being xenophobic is if it shows the flaws in the characters logic. Show me a nice alien and an evil human show me this isn’t just about hating/killing another race. There is always gonna be someone or something trying to take from others so blaming a whole ass race just doesn’t seem logical. Like what happens when you do kill every alien? The world magically goes back to normal? No you still have whole ass humans running the same schemes these aliens you hate so much are doing. It’s not gonna stop just because you kill all/few aliens. The logic ain’t logicing. And if someone tries to say “the characters are fucked up so duh” and? How does that justify killing a whole race? Like bro let’s be real with ourselves until we get over the speech “I hate aliens” all it sounds like to me is “I hate *insert race here*”. If the language was more natural like “I hate the rich” or “I hate the police” that would make more sense. Anyways yeah this whole manga just puts me off and I honestly hope it’s not gonna continue with this “let’s kill all aliens” vibe.

One thing noone shows which I read when trying to ignore discourse from people who all sound kind of ridiculous to me(as someone who loves writing biased povs which in good writing should be EVERY pov) is the end panel of chapter 1. They talk about how aliens ruined their planet and about all their hatred, play around making and kicking sand aliens, and it shows a huge panel of the beautiful scenery zoomed out with Nomimoto saying she never realised how much fun it was being miserable. Literally "being miserable" over a huge spread of the beautiful beach scene. I'm pretty sure the takeaway is they can't appreciate what they have is beautiful because they're full of hate. Like it is not a question who it sides with if you actually read and write at all. The framing is against them ffs. However I'm not interested in the story, I don't like the current trend in lightning speed pacing because that's where this sort of ambiguity is allowed to come from anyway. If it didn't need to hook people quick we could spend longer watching her and Kitami's perspectives clash with the framing of a beautiful Japan and aliens trying to fit into a culture just like anyone else. That doesn't need to be serious either and can have jokes in it while we wait, so the humour feels less sort of depressing I guess when it's the cannibal stuff? I don't think there's anything in there wrongly promoting xenophobia as it's framed as them being completely detached from reality, but this sort of pacing and clickbait the magazine has a lot of itself hampers any interesting stories. It reduces what people think this could lead into to 1) a story about defending xenophobia in a surreal setting, 2) a story about how xenophobia is bad and we eventually watch the alien eating girl get redeemed and forgiven by aliens for murdering them, or 3) a story about how xenophobia is bad and how bigots are delusional monsters whose actions you look forward to leading to their painful deaths. When you could have an actual nuanced story from everything it's given us? How about a fourth one suggested by me now: 4) A story about two irredeemable murderers whose perspective was horrible and hid the beauty of their world from them, as they start siding with other alien killing humans, maybe eventually coming to face those aliens they saw as colonisers being driven to their planet because they were already some sort of refugees from other alien species, who are now going to use the species Nomimoto learned to hate to distract humans as they cause all the pollution people are complaining about. Meanwhile some of the aliens start to coexist better and learn the perspectives of other Japanese people who weren't all speciesist against them but did think they intruded and didn't recognise how their technological superiority and other treatment came off as a privilege. The aliens and other Japanese people learn to connect with each other more throughout the series, while Nomimoto and Kitami's perspectives take them to the heart of others turning them against each other as their casual murder(without even the ridiculous reasons Nomimoto treats as making her better like actually caring about Japan, not liking the skyline, missing eating meat etc) slowly make them hate the killing but leave them with no other allies, at which point they end up as rogue elements maybe killing and eating the ones who were killing the aliens? For some weirdness maybe Nomimoto was actually part another species which is predatory towards the refugee aliens at the start who are turning them against humans and also work with other humans like Kitami, but of course without playing into defining the groups as acting out of biological determinism or whatever - I just think it'd be kind of fitting. Anyway they don't get redeemed but they end up playing an important role in improving things for everyone which couldn't happen without the third group in the plot making contact with some irredeemable bigoted murderers who have just made themselves outcasts from both humans and the starting aliens. Also it's not a bad xenophobia analogy because two things can both be true: Japanese people have a big problem with rising xenophobia, a lot of which is whipped up by actually privileged white westerners immigrating from the US who have no idea how much they fucked up the economy and how complex Japan's feelings on westernisation in the meiji era etc are before making judgements of them and refusing to learn the culture. When it's from Japanese people and not Americans, even coming from the ethnic majority complaining about immigrants CAN punch up since some of the immigration is part of imperialism against them. Is it xenophobic for a Thai person to complain about foreigners coming over and harassing girls everywhere? Still not if it's in the context of sex tourism which westerners have done a huge amount of harm with, even though those same words would be very xenophobic in the context of Germany for example. Is it xenophobic when Nomimoto complains about aliens making her job bad and calling them partners in interspecies couples, not learning the language? YES, because that's the damned point, whatever actual problems there are with the alien's presence and privileges doesn't matter because her pov shows she's ignoring valid issues and focusing on those which let her be hateful and isolated. They let her be an edgelord who "can't say anything" and is the black sheep who has the "courage" to say what everybody is thinking, supposedly. Lots of bigotry is like that and if the story treats it right it might be a great plot.

I wanna see other peoples' opinions and give my perspective. I agree it's confusing cause it seems like parts of it could maybe be sending some kind of message (whether it's a good or bad one lol) and I thought maybe it had inspiration from some of the rude foreigners we've seen in recent years going to Japan only to be rude and disrespectful. Although I'll admit it's kind of hard to tell at this point if we're suppose to be shown that yes, while what Kitami and Nomamoto have gone through sucks and we can at least emphasize why it made them the way they are, that it doesn't justify their still unfair, biased views on aliens but at least shows us WHY they think this way, or if the author goes the bad route of saying that they're 100% justified for their actions and they get their "happy ending", but at this point with only 5 chapters it's hard to tell. I totally get why people think of it being racist but I think I'll at least see where the manga heads 😭

Unfortunately, conflating class struggles with race is a common right-wing tactic, so even if the mangaka wanted to make a class allegory (they're literally eating the rich), they aren't beating the allegations by representing wealthy people as an alien race. Now, if that conflation is what they want to deconstruct, then I could see what they're going for, but I think they'll have quite the challenge pulling it off with this setup.
@OfficialModZero
@OfficialModZero 9 күн бұрын
This is what I'd be pleasantly surprised by as the setup seems to be there for a subversion/deconstruction of xenophobia, like with the mangaka never showing Nomamoto actually being hit by the aliens before her nose bleeds which lends credence to her being an "unreliable narrator". Including how that conflation can be exploited for profit/political gain by bad actors. But expecting/having that level of discussion to occur in a shonen instead of seinin seems like a recipe for rampant controversy and grief for the author if that is their aim. And theres a strong chance the author may just be stumbling into this by accident, but it really is too early to tell. However, the comments on mangaplus are just WILD and bringing in some of the most edgy reactionaries atm.

Even in the most charitable angle, this is still a pretty bad story/analogy. I don’t think this story has any legs unless it rallies a supportive crowd (likely racists) or maybe a big twist. But even then if it keeps stirring controversy it’ll likely just be taken off by Jump. Mind you there are plenty of racist authors and works out there, the amount of people online that act like Japan is some apolitical haven worries me a lot. Especially since xenophobia is a recurring theme on Japanese politics (even if younger people are generally very receptive)

I feel like its truly irrelevant whether the author is actually intending to write rightwing propaganda. In terms of the text, the main characters are just straight-up racist/xenophobic, and so far it seems like we're just asked to sympathize with them, at least to the point of finding their actions amusing and not being horrified. Thinking this is gonna be some kinda 5head reveal where the entire initial premise and framing of the story and characters are reversed and the author says "haha werent you silly for thinking I was racist" seems like an incredible reach to me. And even if the author did do that, again, there's nothing really in the actual text here to suggest that such a twist is coming, the racist violence is presented at face value as at worst an extreme reaction to a prejudice that the story considers true: aliens are an incursion who get undeserved special treatment and are therefore causing damage to the city as a species by living there. That is textbook xenophobic/racist rhetoric. So if you suddenly reveal "oh actually that was wrong", you still wrote that, straightfaced, with no hints towards the contrary, so its not the own you think it is. Anyways, I dont think this manga is worth investing more time in past this point. Its racist at worst and bad, unskilled satire at best.

Isn’t this just another story where the protagonists are just awful people? Like seriously those two are dicks and we’re not necessarily supposed to agree with them but we might see why they think the way they do… even if it’s wrong. We only see their perspective so we don’t see how everyone does. Maybe the rest of society legitimately enjoys having the aliens around. It’s just that we’re following these horrible people on the outside. Not every narrative follows good people you should root for. Sometimes you want to see them fail because that’s the story.

To me this is just a yet another edgy fodder for (Japanese) teenagers.

Maybe Drama Queen is anticapitalist/anticolonialist, but just handled clumsily or there’s a twist coming, in which case I might be back. Maybe it is racist, and I’ll stay away. Or it really is just about a bunch of a-holes, which is totally fine, but just not for me. Regardless of which it is, I don’t think we’ve seen enough yet. I also wonder if maybe the point is to bring in the really racist readers and then try to impart some sort of lesson. Still a super risky move and not one likely to work imo

This is the first time I've heard of Drama Queen, but the vibe I'm getting is the same like when you're on a bus that makes an unexpected turn. You know that there's some time before your stop comes up and there's a possibility of a detour or an extra stop you didn't account for. Yet minute by minute as the bus keeps going off the route, you're starting to question if this is the correct bus and how to make it to your destination if you escape now. The plot of the story has some interesting ingredients, but by chapter 3 it seems like the story is cooked and hard to save as this point. Others have pointed out about the possible US occupation connections leading to this class of "aliens" with protected statuses, and it feels like that might be one of the few ways to save this story. Unfortunately, the inclusion of anti-immigrant tropes is making it difficult to believe this bus is going to arrive at the correct stop, and instead somehow manage to just recreate the turner diaries at the end.

I agree with quite a lot what you said in the video. but to mention some stuff like to address or at least how see it. I do see this manga mention some irl political problems I have seen, but I don’t wanna cause a whole fight about in the comment section because knowing just arguing about it ain't gonna get us anywhere. so I’ll just tackle what is mentioned in the manga. So I agree that these mc’s might be mentally ill especially with the male mc because what he experience was a traumatic situation that left him scared miss placing his anger in the wrong direction. I think personally he’s probably the most reasonable character to be upset. An alien, who was drunk driving crashes into a family killing three of them and just drives, and even after the cops get involved they let this alien slide with no consequences of his actions. Now we don’t know the alien perspective on how if he was really guilty or not for what he done or not probably wont be answered in a while. But clearly by the male mc perspective this alien, who committed a crime that resulted in his families death gets away scot free because how political and societal figures do not wanna cause problems or paint a bad picture of the aliens after doing so much for earthlings. But it exposes this unfair treatment on how can we treat these aliens as individuals if they're very clearly taking advantage of their position such as getting away with crimes and who knows how many crimes that were swept under the rug. But it shows that we are also no better too as humans has done the same things getting away with statues or taking advantage of certain circumstances. now im not gonna get deeper into this whole political side of it. But I thought it was good to mention more about the male mc and how this world and their society has failed one of their own people possibly creating a monster. But in the other hand we don’t know about the aliens but since their so far seen as individuals, but seeing how scummy some of them are being completely aware of the laws and morals of the country they are in. Now like I said before we have little information about these alien if they came from a culture like this or maybe the aliens that were looking for a new home was bc their were kicked out of their own planet for being scummy. who knows we don’t know and thats why im not freaking out about this bc every writer has the right to write a story for everyone to read their its made for political reason or maybe just plain fun and theirs no meaning behind it.

Reading the comments makes me think like yeah this feels like a marketing ploy of some kind, and while I understand your point of hating on the rich and famous I dont think "They speak another lenguage different from ours and comes from another different planet" is about class. The "they probably fled and now they're here because they comited a crime" is something that is used against inmigrants a lot too, so I cannot see it only as "the rich" at all, its more fitting into a racist/xenophobic view. I know this specially bc in my country there is a lot of xenophobic retoric against inmigrants specially. Also the "have special treatment" is also a thought that racist people think about people of colour see for example that in publishing books sometimes there is people that think bc somebody is of colour that they're granted special treatment diferent from white people when is not the case.

I believe that the main factor that will determine whether the allegory is about immigration or colonization will be the conceptualization of the protagonist's actions in the end. What I mean by that is that, to a xenophobe, immigrants are the same as colonizers, just because they themselves didn't personally welcome them to the "their land". Their reasoning, however, tends to get conspiratorial as to why their government would allow those "invaders" to come, since unlike real historical cases of colonization, this didn't involve any military action against the colonized, which becomes a downward spiral of radicalism. We get hints of such thinking in the manga too, regarding the aliens saving Earth from an asteroid. Usually, in the real world, those conspiracy theories are just nonsense, with immigration being just a thing people have done naturally since forever, but in a fictional world, anything can go however the author wants it to. If the conspiracy turns out true, then it will be an allegory about colonialism. If the conspiracy turns out false, then it is an allegory about xenophobia and immigration. The morality of the Protagonist's reaction is solely dependent on the reality that the author decides to create. For all we know, we might suddenly find out in a future chapter that the aliens also eat humans just because the author said so, which would retroactively absolve the protagonist of doing the same. Or maybe not, and the protag will be held accountable for the murder and consumtion of another sentient being, even if they believed themselves to be right.

So, I just want to say that even if a character has a specific mindset that doesn't mean the author shares that mentality or is trying to promote their ideology. Protagonist or not they can be inherently flawed (or downright evil is some cases) people who believe they have been wronged enough to warrant their extreme viewpoint even if they almost certainly haven't. It is entirely possible that they are written to be in the wrong and completely overreacting. (Hence drama queens) They might not be meant to be heroes, they just happen to be the protagonists. The mangaka doesn't have to support a xenophobia, genocidal or a general murderous view in general to write a story about it. There are certainly some out there who write blatant mean spirited and hate filled manga, but we don't know what angle he is going for yet as the first 10-15 issues of a new weekly manga can be kinda shaky as they try to exposition dump and find their footing. I'm interested to see where the story will go. I just hope that Jump+ doesn't drop the series before it has a chance to go anywhere.

I think it’s anti colonialist. Minorities don’t get special treatment but especially those in Japan nor are they treated with reverence. Yet in a colonized country it’s often that way as those colonizers are seen as superiors and may freely treat those below them poorly.

Yeah I don't get the backlash. The only difference between this manga and immigration like which is a big theme is that we don't have immigrants bringing in advanced technology at all. The other issue is ok they supposedly saved the planet but how is it that they can turn a 1st world developed country's population into 2nd class citizens? In the west mass immigration has become such an issue especially when local government prioritizes them over its own citizens. I see this reflected in Japan bc the stagnant economy and ongoing low birthrate for decades now. It's gotten so bad they might actually have to taken in more immigrants/illegals. There's great examples of how much of this is, imagine a foreigner becoming the manager of a company in a place like Japan and not even knowing the language. This is similar in the US where we are beginning to have to learn a foreign language to accommodate the ongoing influx of illegals when they should be learning ours. I do see how it's controversial when Japan, a successful homogeneous country of all places has a right to protect its culture. The same goes for South Korea, China, and the Nordic countries. I don't advocate for violence towards foreigners but I do understand where the prejudice stems from. In this case, I also wouldn't be taking crap from cotton candy looking aliens making life harder for me.

Not seeing how it or the mangaka are racist, if anything it reminds me of the fact that many Japanese don't or didn't Like US occupation or the cultural changes after WWII. Angel Cop also had a dialogue about this and being "The US's vassal state". The concept and character are interesting.

I feel like this is an extension of the moralizing of goblins/orcs drama, where people look at them as like black people and connect dots from there, but I don't see where it's clarified that the aliens here stand for a race that is of moral consideration even, such as having consciousness/morality, for all you know they can be a hivemind next chapter and that surely would lend to think differently? I just don't get the need to as quickly as possible project implications and call it "n*zi sh*t".

If I recall Goblins were used as Jewish Stereotypes at one point? Might be remembering wrong, But it's mainly that people are looking into the story and noticing similiar things to rhetoric about "oh we're being replaced by the IMMAGRANTS and the foreigners! We should kill them all!" and are being cautious Especially since n,zis and really shitty people in general will use dogwhistles to appeal to eachother. (For example that whole thing on TT where people used "Hunting Gnomes" as a replacement for "Hunting Jewish People"

hi! came here just to debate a point - but sidenote, in my opinion i believe these elements in the manga could simply be symptomatic of bad writing (i.e, the social commentary usually relies on "speciesism" - for example the very obvious priviledges that rely on BEING an alien - instead of deriving from a symptom/escalation of the systems in place), id much rather see how this goes down to see if its like, very overt racism/xenophobia or "accidental bigotry by poorly thought out writing", lol i feel like the perception of the aliens as a metaphor for immigrants comes from actual xenophobic discourse, though! dont quote me on this, since i could be misremembering, but dont actual xenophobic circles use (or used?) the term alien to refer to foreigners? add that to the text, with those really edgy lines about "thrashing my home" and "society is on their side", also the part about alien language with their boss, and it starts to get kind of. weird, honestly sorry for any mistakes btw, english isnt my first language lmaooo

@@ephemeral999 Your English is better than mine probably so don't worry about that. I get where people are feeling something from it (especially westerners that might have this thinking more ingrained as you say) but the issue I have is the need to as promptly as possible to label these dialogue bits as "N*zi sh*t" as the author of this video did in the last part of it, when I could easily imagine plenty of other ways where that dialogue is just talking about the aliens in the story and not meant to for something in the real world, something that might make the aliens not even of moral consideration. I believe the author of this video is trying to act out that they are a neutral methodical party that isn't as hasty 'as the two sides' but they are pretty hasty themselves.

@@BlackTakGolD honestly, i feel like most of it comes from believing - like myself- that art is a reflection of the real world, so while i wont say its "n@zi stuff" due to this just being the start of the manga (which could have some 5d chess turnaround if the author is just punking us), i can understand people who interpret this as a reflection of general bigotry or potentially the authors views on the subconscious level of writing, even if it was just intended to be a "simple story about aliens"! which maybe was intensified due to the real world relations with japan and immigration, i dunno but thats my take on it as someone who loves to overthink anything and to me the person who made this video clearly is trying to play both sides but has complicated feelings on the subject (either thinking its a bad attempt at a metaphor for a class-commentary or just. kind of weird with the concept of aliens), but that just comes with the territory of being human - no ones 100% unbiased i guess its better to wait to see how far the story goes, depending on the way it plays out it could either just be the worst case scenario (the immigrant thing), the best case scenario (we got played) or some other options (poorly thought out class-commentary, something that was meant to be unserious but had weird implications, etc etc) i hope you have a good day and understand a bit of mine and others perspective on this :D

18:20 I mean when you try to simply something that obviously has layers its gunna get confusing The manga shows us aliens being bad The it shows us humans who can be just as scummy Its also shows us aliens who are just bystanders It shows us aliens who have relationships with humans But is also shows us how aliens are usally privlaged and are in places of power But also shiws us aliens who arent but whod still probably be on a higher socail standing then the humans in poverty given there social prescription Then we see our main characters they seem thankfull for aliens improving life but also hates the aliens because in return for improving human in some way they are getting special treatment Sure ther bosses in lowe incime jobs could be replaced by shitty humans but thats not the complete point but its is part of it right? we see alien social standings and we see what they are more likely to get away with If that car drive had been a human it could've been a likler chance theyd be found or had consequences but because that ailen could be genralised with the ones who saved the human race idk its all up in the air im hoping for more episodes

from what ive seen, the issues around this manga is just another case of terminally online people projecting their thoughts onto a manga they havnt read, and that goes for both sides of the argument. imo the author probably isnt fascist, if he has characters pointing out the futility of the main characters plan, thats still the author writing that, if there are good aliens that contradicts the main characters view of aliens, thats still the author writing in those aliens. there are plenty of stories throughout history that have main characters who arent meant to be good, sane and logical people without the author endorsing the main characters. edit: also i want to point out. its called drama queen... you know, what you call someone who over reacts

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if the author does or doesn't mean the story to sound racist, bc that's the result, at least so far I might try to read it in the future once it's either have more chapters (50-60 maybe) or it'd finished I am on the side that it's probably intentional that the story is seems so wild and controversial, but it doesn't matter to me bc pissing yourself ironically it's still pissing yourself I do wish the best to the author tho! Shonen world is very cruel with how easy it is for new mangas to be axed if they don't have a super attractive or polemic first couple of chapters

Idk to me seeing the chapters people rage about I don't understand how it's about racism exactly. It's not the first time a different species or fantasy race is mark as dangerous or oppressing. Honestly seeing this kinda made me thing someone wanted to make a Manga about eating the rich literally. I think I'd need more than just this. Feels like an anime about corrupt corporations and of course you can't outright make an managa about that. Because you can get unwanted attention from them. So I think making them aliens is like the equivalent of Dangparompa (definitely butchered the name), making the blood pink to be less graphic.

Manga writers were overtly progressive back then. Cyborg 009 denounced fascism, Great Mazinger Z was anti racial discrimination, Akira was anti-capitalism, and Black Jack had a story that acknowledged Jim Crow laws. I feel that the author is not really naive, they know of the implications behind what they're making.

First panels could already feel the authors frustration with gentrification which has been happening a lot all over the world since Covid. I mean hell, imagine life becoming more difficult when foreigners start coming to your area, in result apartments start to turn rise to an unfordable, groceries shops starts to place things overpriced and the lost of local culture to cater to the style of the “foreigners” with the same generic cafe shop. This comic is not xenophobic this comic is a product of its environment. This is frustrations that exist and deserve to be expressed through something. Preferably some poorly written comic than actions that lead to something worse.

Yeah but it is still xenophobic for a person to blame their neighbors who are from a different culture than the actual power structures that are impacting their neighborhood. A person can work with their neighbors to bring up issues like high rent to local government meetings. Instead of just seething in rage all alone resenting people who you could be in community with. Xenophobia is just the lazy-man’s option that creates no real change that most people take because it’s easier.

Even if you lied to my face and told me the creator has zero biggoted idiations and i chose to believe you, the material in of itself is biggoted and does not promote a open minded perspective to cultural assimilation and immigrants. It is disproportionately "othering". If the story hard pivots thats one thing but in its current form it's gross because even if you as a writer are a totally swell person, youre actively ignoring uninted messaging and subtext that can be siphoned from yours or any body of work and as such youre not immune to criticism on your manga being politically poo poo. I say that because 10:33 into the video because "being charitable" to the writer might as well be the equivalent of a free pass to keep it up instead of reflecting on what he may be intentionally or unintentionally saying. Reminder, theres been no attempts at the moment to show the "aliens" (who are assimilated to society and are not evil violent invaders here to "take your white women")in a positive light and our other human characters are also supporting our leads. Again, theres a chance the story will hard pivot into a new perspective and truly show that the early stuff was a sort of bait and switch. Which i'd respect. But im not about to read and watch every manga and anime expecting the next Attack on Titan if you get my point. Now that i got further in the video and got to the "eat the rich" theory. My point is emboldened. Frankly this is why i hate Japanese creators using fictional creature's for metaphor/allegory because they dont line up 1 to 1 with the real thing. So the message falls flat on its face because "yknow, maybe that politician has a point about that kid who shoots laser from his eyes". For all the faults of comics, im always glad real united states history factually happened in them because when a writer might wanna be coy and use the xmen as an allegory for race or sexuality, at the bare minimum those marginalized groups are actually in the story because your fictional stand in cant ACTUALLY stand in for the subject. They Simply provide a window to its ideas. Think about it, it's a mixed message if theyre a "eat the rich" allegory but theyre ALL ethnic minorities not from "here" and instead of using language that focuses on their types(the rich) the manga uses language of "theyre different from me". Ultimately good video.
