27:58 that Z7 III Jordan describes is exactly what I need: - compact lightweight body - high res sensor - higher sync speed for indoor and outdoor commercial shootings. I don't want that big Z8 body. I don't need great video capabilities. I don't need 120 fps burst rates.

Z7iii at $3000 makes sense to me because of all the reason Jordon mentioned, 1. Make the screen like a7rv 2. give better manual focus assit from Zf/Z6iii, 3. illuminated buttons 4. better DR with 61 mp sensor 5. may be ISO 32 as Native 6. focus imrpvoemwnts similar to Z6iii 7. 10 fps, 8. z6iii viewfinder 9. 8k video modes but with limitations

The reason I won't buy a Z8, but would buy a Z7III, is the size and weight of the Z8, It's enormous and for landscape use, it's simply too big and heavy to walk about with. It's bigger than the GFX I just sold because it was too big!

Totally agree! I prefer the body size of the Z6Iii but I like the three-way screen of the Z8. My specs wish list for the Z7iii is close to Jordan’s. I think there is actually a larger market for this kind of camera than Chris et al. suggest.

The R7 isn't a bad camera, but having used a 7D and 7D mark 2, the body is just so plasticky and minimal on the R7. No top screen, way fewer buttons. Feels like a Rebel dslr more than a real successor to the 7D series or nikon d500 level crop cameras.

@BlendyStick
@BlendyStick 19 күн бұрын
Fewer buttons perhaps, but the level of customization on the buttons is fantastic. No top screen is disappointing, I agree, but that's the market as a whole at the moment. As for the feel of it, I think the weight throws off a lot of experienced DSLR uses who are more used to a professional camera being a lot heavier. Compared to lower grade models within the R lineup though, the R7 feels quite sturdy and rugged.

A Z6III body with a Sony 60Mpix sensor (semi-stacked ideally) in it sounds a great Z7III to me. Super high definition and compact body would make it the ideal companion for many. Cause if the Z8 is a great tool, it's still pretty bulky and heavy... Where it makes sense for sport and wildlife, it doesn't for street shooters and landscapers alike

Nikon has never used Sony sensors. It designs it's own sensors, which are manufactured by a division of Sony. That's why no Sony camera has a sensor like the D850, Z6, Z7, Z8/9, or Z6III.

Thanks for the shout out! I didn't realize they made full on polaroid backs. The one that I was talking about uses the little 6x6 instax square film. If nothing else it's been crazy useful for testing lenses on the spot to make sure they're not crazy out of tune. Dial in the exposure, swing it all the way to wide open, fast shutter, take a picture. Swing it over to long shutter, small aperture, take another picture. Maybe another in between? five minutes later I know if the lens is good mechanically.

Everybody is speculating and you can also see the no. 7 in the intro of Nikon Z6iii where they were showing Z9,8 and 6 but you will notice a 7 in between for a short period.

My pipe dream is a super high res Z7III like that, but with a 28x40 sensor. The smidge of extra size would probably fit within the image circle of their current lenses, and let a very high resolution sensor like that retain similar dynamic range to the 60MP cameras currently on the market.

As a Z7ii shooter for 4 years, the Z8 is too damm heavy for landscapers. The new Z6iii is now in a bigger heavier body so that is no too. What about AZ7iii in a rangefinder style camera. As a lady who does landscape photography I don't want big and heavy. That is one of the reasons I tend to shoot more primes. I also own the ZF. After 18 months since release there are no stubby S line primes with appature rings. At the moment I am stuck with 2 plastic primes 28 & 40mm. The move to Sony is around the corner. I am sure I am not the only Nikon Z7ii- ZF shooter who feels like this. The other thing that has always got up my nose is there will never be a 70-200 F4. Instead we got a 70-180.

I don't believe a Z7 iii is coming until they have something to differentiate, all the reasons in the video. I love they take into account that it's an opportunity cost in terms of production lines and R&D. They should wait for the next high-resolution sensor, then it could make sense for landscapes. In the USA is even more radical, because a new Z8 is running about $3500, not 4K. Where are they going to squeeze the Z7 iii? On the other hand if Nikon wants to go crazy the diamerter of the Z mount is 55mm exacty the diagonal of a small medium format sensor. That will be a disrupting camera. The problem is AF Nikon needs fast readout to properly AF, so maybe in 3 years.
@MiltonGeorges
@MiltonGeorges 20 күн бұрын
I disagree re: Z7iii not coming - there is still a need in the lineup for an extremely high resolution camera, which currently caps out at < 50 MP from Nikon (pixel shift excluded). Similar parallel to the D800 launch when the “pro” cameras were the D3/4 lineup.

Hi PetaPixel, thank you for the podcast. Much appreciated for the information and entertainment. Not sure where to send my questions. These questions are probably for Chris since A7RV is Chris' favorite camera based on my understanding... Q1. How do you switch the tracking focus between different subjects in a wide or zone focus area? My current solution is to switch the focus area to "tracking spot focus area" and use the joystick when using the view finder or use the touchscreen on LCD panel, but i still prefer to press a button to toggle between different subject i want to focus on in a wide or zone focus area mode... Q2. Does using (S)mall lossless compressed file (18megapixel) give you better low light capability than (L)arge or (M)edium file? Thanks in advance. Look forward to your answers.

I think a Z7iii with the higher resolution EVF, no stacked sensor (same sensor as Z7ii is fine), and Expeed 7 processor for more modern autofocus would be fine. They probably wouldn’t need to update after that. It can be marketed as a lighter camera for people who hike and do landscape photography, but who want the higher megapixels. It would work better than the Z7ii for occasional wildlife, and as a backup body to the Z8.

I completely 'ditto' Jordan on the Z7iii. I had the 7ii and tried the Z8 and didn't care for it. More gizmos than I needed and too big and heavy for the kind of work I do. I ended up getting the Leica SL3 (lighter than Z8) and love the 60mp and a couple of lenses. However, if they come out with a 47MP Z7iii (don't need 60MP but that would be nice), and keep the same size of the Z6iii, same two way tilt and good AF, I'd seriously consider grabbing one again and put some extra money in my pocket. I can't see them having one before 2026 though.

In terms of dancing photography: Which kind of dance? To me, it sounds more like an argentine tango salon than like a lindy hop or typical social dance venue. If it's the first, dim lights are a must and bright lights a no-go. And it very much depends on how close you can get to the dancers, are you going for full body or faces - it's one of those question too much variables remain unknown and therefore the answer will also come out blurry. But I've only 20 years of experience in this situations, so what do I know 🤔? Generally speaking: the less you disturb the dancers and the more you share your pictures, the easier you get better ones.

If you make all the same updates to a Z7II that Nikon just made to the Z6 series (Expeed 7, new AF, increased video / FPS), you get the Z8. Z7III needs to be a high megapixel body to compete with Sony A7R series. My head scratcher is if Nikon was just going to kill off the 7 series, why didn’t they just call the Z8 a Z7III, and reserve the 8 series for whatever in the future?

For Jaron; a very good way to cut down on film costs is with DIY what you can. I shoot bulk (100 foot) rolls of Kentmere 100 and 400 that are available on BHPhoto for around $60 each with a $50 film loader (cheaper ones are definitely available), and last around 16-20 36 exposure rolls per 100 foot bulk roll. You just roll them into plastic reusable cassettes that are also on BH for about a dollar each, and send them to a developer when you're done. Developing black and white at home also isn't expensive, a full suite of Ilford chemicals and a developing tank will run you about $100-150. Since I scan everything, I can easily correct sharpness issues or low contrast of the Kentmere. Hope this encourages you to use the Nikons some more; I have an F and an FTn and they are wonderful cameras, the Leicas of Japan.

1:07:17 the a9iii is probably the camera Anthony would want to upgrade to if he can afford it. Would eliminate the banding issue and is essentially on par in dynamic range at the high iso settings he'd be using on his current camera. Plus 120 fps burst would greatly increase his chances of nailing that pause in movement.

Hey guys, you struggled a bit answering the question of dance photography. I’ll help with this: - A camera with stacked sensor is a must for this environment. You use Sony, A1 or the A9’s are the best choices. The others are not good for these purposes. - Some cameras has variable shutter, make your own test and you’ll figure it out because the frequency of the lighting will not change in these spaces. Same for theaters. - If you don’t have stacked sensor camera, you have the A7 something, use mechanical shutter and don’t use the electronic. - For video, only 24fps, 25 or 30, you have to make your own test to check what works best. Play a bit with the speed as well, the rule is the double of the fps but doesn’t apply for this. Or get a global shutter camera. Have fun

1:06:20 My tip would be to crank ISO and shoot B&W - at least some of the time. B&W is much more forgiving than colour for noise, as ugly chroma noise ceases to be a factor. Also helps mitigate the effects of mixed colours of lighting. Obvs not always the best, as you may want to capture the colours of outfits etc, but a mixture of B&W high SS/ISO shots to freeze action, with some lower SS/ISO colour shots to capture colour and atmosphere, could be a good shout.

Glad you took that "long drive" to one of the best camera stores in the flat 48. Next, you need to check out the FIND lab in Utah, they use an old mini lab as well for their prints on Fuji Crystal paper just like Blue Moon. Prices are better for scans from them. Blue Moon forever tho, that staff is next level and they all love photography. I mail my film to both of those stores when not traveling and near them.

I really want something like the A7CR but in the Nikon system. I really think the rangefinder style ultra portable market is underrepresented right now and a second full frame high resolution option would help open the market up.

Now that Nikon has dropped the 35mm F/1.4 dubbed optimised for video, it's highly likely Nikon is testing the water for users' response to the optimisation and Z6iii combination. It would be interesting to see Nikon not leveraging the video capabilities on the next camera. I believe the next camera will expand on the hybrid frontier and more likely APS-C. I expect to see a lot more video-optimised lenses for Nikon as well. I think @Jordon should try the 35mm f/1.4 on the Z6iii and do a video review. I personally am looking forward to doing video with Nikon. I have the Z6ii and 24-120mm f/4 as my primary video lens. The Z6iii is a good value proposition, and I will most likely get it going forward.

Nikon made the Z50 three times to varying degrees of success. The Z50 is in need of an upgrade but I don't know if people are interested in that end of the market from Nikon. I'd personally like to see a Z500 - a DX version of the Z9 in the vein of the D500. Whether there's still a market for rugged, high FPS, crop body cameras, I don't know.

I can't quite understand what did please Jordan so much in Z6 III so that he could switch. Was it EVF and readout speed? He basically said "add video lenses with focus clutch, open gate, shutter angle, and a bunch of other stuff that Panasonic already had for years or added recently". I also remember how he praised GH7 saying that sensor size matters less than videographer's quality of life featureset such model offers. What does Z6III do SO MUCH better than Lumix lineup (especially since we can be sure that nest FF video-oriented model will get all the novelties from GH7)? Also can you finally make the great APS-C shootout without Z50 II?

For the person shooting dance in a dim room. I do that a lot and also have zero control over lighting, and often have to shoot at f2.8 due to zooming. Crank that ISO up, honestly 3200 or 4000 is okay, at least for me. The second thing is Adobe's AI De-noise. It works wonders and it really makes that high ISO noise basically go away. And like the guys said, burst a lot, shoot in RAW obviously. You will still have a lot of blurry shots to throw away but you'll also end up with a lot more keepers possibly if you use Adobe's AI de-noise.

A Z7 III with combination tilt/flip rear screen would be a good idea. Both Sony and Panasonic are using this type of rear screen on limited models as well as Fuji. I also wish OM would make one I would upgrade just for this feature. Tilt screen are better for say close ups of bugs in tight bushy situations for odd angles as well as other types of photography

seriously, Nikon doesn't need another FF at that range, the price gap between Z6III and Z8 is not that big. What Nikon needs now is a powerful APSC camera to compete with Sony A6700, Canon R7 for wildlife and sport.

The issue with film development is that you can use machines, and those machines are somewhere in America. If you shoot lots of film, it's better to invest into those machines. Whenever I send out film to develop, there's always a mess up unless I developed it myself. Wished Costco and others kept doing those things. Was a great era to live in for film.

Just saying: I would take Jordan's fantasy Nikon Z7iii. I really could care about which screen; I love the one on my Z8 and Z9 and really don't take selfie's with my phone, so I could care less about a flippy screen. I want a mini-Z8 for hiking and travel. I could live with topping out at 15fps and ZF quality video, but great autofocus, no blackout (so maybe just electronic shutter), and the Z6iii's EVF. Great for hiking, much better for wildlife/movement than my old Z7ii, and great for travel, landscape, and general use, or as an occasional back-up to a Z8. The higher resolution (between 45.6 and 61MP) would allow for cropping when necessary, like when shooting wildlife and you can't position yourself to fill the screen with your subject. It's really the smaller form-factor that in a "mini-Z8" that would drive my purchase decision.

I think there is a market for a still image focused camera with the sensor size of the Z8 but without the higher end video function or high frame rate. Many are simply waiting for a Z7ii with better autofocus as that would totally meet their needs. Put the new processor and EVF from the Z6iii into the Z7ii and sell the new camera for around the same price as the Z6iii. Then buyers would have the choice between the Z6iii if wanting the video ability, good low light performance, and smaller sized files to store. Versus the Z7iii for still photographers who don't really care about video but who do want the larger file size of the Z7ii but desire the improved autofocus (plus the faster processor probably would allow slightly better frame rate without EVF blackout). For those wanting more bells and whistles or the better video with the large sensor, then the step up is the extra cost to get to the Z8. Three different markets.

For dancing, Can you put lights in the corners of the rooms? I'm assuming that lights disturbing them could be on camera flash, apologies if you mean any lights. I've lit wedding parties by putting 4 heads in each corner of a room, up fairly high, then turned them on and off as I move around the room so the flash is behind the people I'm shooting. Given your system and fast lens you shouldn't need too much power so it might not be too disturbing depending on the size of the space.

Great episode! I agree with Jordan in the perfect lens scenario. I would love if Canon made the same f/2 monster zoom lens, but 20-50mm instead of 28-70. I'am gravitating towards RF 15-35mm because of the wide part. Its insane to me that no one have alreday make a 20-50mm f/2.8 or so

If Nikon put Z8 internals in a smaller body like z7ii, cut some video features as otherwise it'll overheat, and then market it as the Z8 mini, or Z7 iii, that'd probably work for a lot of people.

Ad Pentax 17.. all three remaining operators in Ricoh are working 24/7 :D But this repeats. They are not building on stock before release. They did this last time with K-5 which was very successful camera. All other cameras introduced later had initial problematic rush which leveled after few months. Like when they introduced K1 and it was impossible to get it during first 3-4 months and then they were everywhere. My first K20D was different story. According to camera data my K20D was manufactured TWO MONTHS before that camera was even introduced. But those were old times when Pentax easily sold tons of cameras every year.

The Z7III exists. The secret order code is Z8. I'd expect a Z8C before a similar Z6. The Z9 will likely get Gen 4 cards in the next version. That will allow faster stills but also allow 120 8K and 8K prores raw. Final point describing a niche version of the Z7III doesn't make sense because niche cameras are never cheap. That Z7III would likely end up more expensive than the Z8. Smaller base for the fixed costs. Shorter production run.

Speaking of a possible Z50 successor, I would be curious if Nikon has any plans to launch a D500 successor (possibly a Z80). The mid/high-end APS-C mirrorless market has basically only been occupied by the EOS R7 in my opinion, since the Fuji bodies aren't as competitive with AF and lenses and the A6700 is more mid-range in terms of features. If an R7 II is coming sometime soon-ish, I think a Z80 of sorts would be a killer deal for sports/wildlife shooters at anywhere around $3000 US (25% less than the Z8), and it would represent the rebirth of the D500/200-500mm combo given the popularity of the Z 180-600mm. I just hope they'd give it something other than that poor old 20.9MP sensor!

52:27 YES!!! THIS 100% Why am I still stuck to the old and honestly not that inspiring 28/2.0 Sony FE lens? Also, why did Zeiss stop designing 28mm lenses? Aren’t their last released 28’s m-mount and C/Y era distagons? It’s such a shame the Batis line seems dead in its tracks. I love the Zeiss and Sony Zeiss lenses, a 28 distagon is sorely missed next to the 40CF. I know there’s a 25 and yes you can crop, but it doesn’t shoot the same way. Now the 40mm niche has been fulfilled, being on the 28’s! Oh and TS lenses, while you’re at it. I’d love to see what Sony could come up with on that front.

Another great Peta Pixel Podcast. Question on the new film cameras coming out. In the digital world, we know that some lens as so sharp, they cause artifacts (moire) in images captured by certain sensors. Especially sensors without an AA filter. Do you have the same phenomenon with film cameras? Different ISO film? Is that even possible?

I think a Z7 III makes a lot of sense as a stripped down Z8 near, say, the Z6 III's price point. Take away some of the more insane video features, maybe even bring back a 30 minute recording limit, give it two SD UHS II cards, give it slower burst, shorter buffer, no high-speed crop shooting. Keep the EVF resolution, and maybe give it a more pedestrian grip for smaller hands. You now have a high-resolution body for every segment of the market!

Wating for a Z9 II ( but not yet , my wallet is not ready) After 2 years with it , this is what I'd want: - Better AF - Most important , the AF is good , but on portraits not so much the eye AF ,is more like eyelash AF for sports excelent. - Pre-capture Raw - Better IS - Better EVF - ( though not critical , the Z9 though only 3m dots , it's still very clear and very responsive). 20 - FPS is fine by me actually , I am more focused on focus accuracy , than FPS so 30 - 40 not crictial ,will be nice to have. - If they intend to keep it mech-shutter free , improve flash sync and flickring or bring back the mech. Other than those love my Z9 , a workhorse, 248K images and still going strong!!
