So You Wanna Know About Bob Glidden's Ford 351 Cleveland, See Inside The Engine, The Shop

I made this video to document, a week with Bob Glidden, with his early cars, initially, and then just the '76 Pinto. He raced a Fairlane, and Mustangs, in super stock, my favorite is his 68 Cobra Jet Mustang. The paint now, if it is the same car, is Killer Candy Red. I wanted to make it a week with Bob Glidden, Seeing the Pinto race, coming back to the shop, and get torn down. See inside the Ford 351 Cleveland he raced, check out his shop inside, I narrated it to give more insight, and detail on things you might know, if it was not pointed out. I am not really a Ford guy but appreciate all fast cars. It was in 88 or 89 when on the western swing the prostock guys would stop on their way Seattle at Woodburn to test. I was at the Warren Johnson pit watching him sign autographs. Got bored and went over to the Glidden pit to watch him for a while. There was a kid in a wheelchair towards the back of the line. Bob got up from his seat, walked back, got the kid, picked him up and sat him in his car and posed for pictures. Changed my perspective of Bob Glidden forever.

Wow, that’s a real story. I love that. No doubt Glidden was like to fans very cool and out. I will tell you this. I talked to Warren Johnson, and last Friday, second time we have talked about 45 minutes. What a story he has to tell. It just amazes me. He’s going to be on DragBoss Garage live. Chat soon. I looked up Glidden in the dictionary it simply said " LEGEND". Bob won with various makes and models. He also won with both Ford and Mopar small blocks and my personal favorite his 500 inch Boss. Always had time to talk with fans unless he was thrashing. A great racing family.

The Cleveland's are still impressive today. Jon Kasse race engines based off the 351 Cleveland consistently wins the engine masters competition most years. Glidden was ahead of his time. And that was also a Cleveland that Ernie Elliot built that helped Bill take the fastest lap around Talladega at 216 mph .

A late stepfather set a record at Daytona in 68 in his 67 Shelby GT350, with his 289. 167.86 mph lap, 210 back stretch. Black flagged for possible cheating. Long story, but it was legal and made 504@9k rpm all season.

FYI, Ted Haywood. God bless his soul. :-) Taught me much. He learned from Smokey. After a stint in the Marines, and a tour with Jax PD. They weren't fond of racing officers. Seems you would promote him to train the rest and reduce fatalities, but that's just me, I guess. I think LA caught on 40 years later.

Although I'm an FE guy of 50 years literally, mainly pulling truck motors, wish I had his secrets back in the 70's . Fortunately, our sideoiler and a few head and port tricks of our own kept us on top locally in the stock class. But, when I watch this I see how far behind we were in knowledge, skill and work ethic. As I build what will be my final FE (428 cj) you can bet I will have some intake runner experimentation going on. Ray Paqueut, legendary t-bolt racer has allowed us good looks at his 427. We shall see this Sumner. Thank you for all that you do brother. Glidden deserves nothing less

That was like 74 or 75 ish. Good luck with the build. My buddy has two aluminum FE blocks, that need finished, these are as cast. He designed the Pond 427 block. If interested in a block let me know. Working on deal to get 2 as casted Cleveland blocks from buddy. My other new friend, is going to machine them.

I find the Ford Pinto so cool man , beautiful 70’s lines , I’ve got a ‘79 F100 with an Australian Made 351 Cleveland, it’s a beautiful engine I absolutely love it , when I bought the truck I used to flog it , and it never let me down , one day this mechanic did a dodge work on the hose felt on the 750 Holley butterfly locking it I was with my daughter behind this B-Double the truck kept pulling forward I tapped the accelerator to try unlock it it went further up on the high revs I pulled onto my drive way it was high as high I turned the key off even made this blast noise of petrol , unlocked the butterfly she runs like a queen up to today it was almost 10 years ago , 351 Cleveland are very loved in Australia, thank you for this documentary. You didn’t mention the exhaust plates. The trick was to mill 1 inch off the exhaust ports, put the plates on that straightened the port exit- as stock they have a bad dog-leg bend. By straightening the exit and making the bend downward with the headers instead of the head the exhaust was freed up allowing the trick intake to work.

Thanks Tim! I was a big time pro stock fan through this period. This is great stuff. I met Bob at the Mile High Nationals in 1982. He was standing inside the doorway of the trailer checking spark plugs when I first saw him. I brought two of those spark plugs home with me and still have one on a shelf in my living room. I have always been a naturally aspirated engine guy and enjoyed learning as much as possible about racing engines in general. Thanks again Tim for helping to keep this history alive.

I watched Bob in the finals against Dyno Dons Pinto at beeline dragway AHRA Winternationals in 1973. Have video of that final. Don took the win against Bob in the finals. But I don’t believe Bob had won his first race as a Pro Stock driver yet. Watched Bob in the following years up until he passed Dec 17 2017…. Great photos of Glidden racing Tim. Thanks.

Many moons ago in a small machine shop in Pooler GA I remember coming to work one day and the old man who ran the shop said he had some eye candy for me. A guy had dropped off a set of Rousch Cleveland heads. I remember that the exhaust ports were completely milled away. As in the factory exhaust ports were completely gone. In their place was a plate that ran the length of the head with exhaust ports relocated. The plate was bolted into the head wherever they could find a spot to drill and tap on the head. That and epoxy everywhere. Not only that but all the head bolt holes were drilled out and sleeved, due to the extreme angle the heads were angle milled. The rocker bosses (all of them) appeared to be all welded and redrilled and tapped as well. The intake ports were filled with epoxy and resembled the shape of a BBC intake port. The guy that had them said he had spent a lot of time trying to buy them. I believe he said they were an early nascar head. They were pretty neat. I don’t know what ever happened to them.

For awhile at least. They definitely were challenging when spraying the ever living hell out of them. But all in all it worked well for me.

I ran into Bob Glidden once just walking around the pits at the Winter Nationals back in the early '80s. Have to say he was one of the most approachable drivers in the Pro classes, a class act. Custom sheet metal tunnel ram intakes became pretty much the standard by the mid 80's if I remember correctly and VERY expensive too. Great video my friend, thanks 👍👍.

My best friend and I were 13 and working on his 289 the summer we got to see Bob Glidden at Thunder Valley in Bristol, when it was IHRA. We thought we were in the club, knowing how Bob would cover his motor. :) The details you show are amazing and very cool! I knew The Hardy family, Don Hardy chassis, I went all access to the US Nat's from 1978 to 1993, and young Don was a good friend at the Nat's, my age, and we hung out the whole time every year. Now Don Jr. is a VERY accomplished custom engine builder! I grew up in my dad's Machine Shop, but not for me. Feel free to look up Don Hardy Race Engines, he's great!

Now that’s a pure pleasure memory, the days when things are much simpler. In the heat of the moment, you’re very lucky. I was only about 13 and 78 and we got to see it on TV occasionally. Thanks for another great collection of photos and videos of the Glidden family in action. The intake photos clearly show the extensive modifications that were necessary to work quite well with the rest of the Cleveland combination. The results weren’t very pretty to look at but the final results IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE made up for the lack of pleasing eye appeal. Gliddens critics still enjoy speculating about his reasons for concealing the induction system. Maybe he felt a little uncomfortable with how duct tape looked on a typically beautiful Cleveland engine ? Another Cleveland specific item that’s visible in all of the photos are the aluminum exhaust port plates that are an integral part of the production cast iron heads “high port” conversion process. A expensive modification such as this wouldn’t be very practical for average street builds but for more radical builds back then AND now, I would consider it to be an essential modification for any Cleveland that uses OEM iron heads. The proof is in the classic videos showing Glidden pulling away from the competition on the big end. Or in the case of a rare hole shot on Glidden, he would catch and pass the competition by half track for the win 🏆. No wonder BILL JENKINS was so GRUMPY 😉.

But the DBG has made many newcomers aware of the Cleveland experience and they might benefit the most by starting with the basics. One thing is for sure, when the Clevelands hit the Pro Stock scene, all of the other competitors had to work much harder to EARN their runner-up trophies 🏆 😁.

@@DragBoss351Cleveland …Despite my somewhat twisted sense of humor, I would have to give credit when it’s due. Pro Stock is one of the most difficult classes to be consistently competitive in. It truly is a team effort and not just all about having a great driver. The class is also vastly different now than it was during the seventies when the driver was often the owner, engine builder, chassis and transmission guy. He could take credit for the the wins and the losses. Nowadays it’s run like a business and requires a team of specialists. The cost in dollars is staggering and having sponsors with deep pockets is often a requirement for a winning team. Modern Pro Stock competitors still have to work their asses off. But I still prefer the glory years of Cleveland dominance and the other competitors got their asses handed to them along with their runner-up trophies 🏆 😁.

Went to the Pro Drags in Seattle in the early 90's. Walked down to the head of the staging lanes right behind the next set of PS cars ready to go. A bunch of people standing there ahead of us. The next set of Pro Stockers leave the line with a tire grip screetch. The guy ahead of me swing his head around to keep from getting rocks in his eyes when the cars launch. Non other than the Champ Bob G, staring right back at me from about 3 feet. He gives me a sly wink and turns back around. Smart move swinging his head to keep from getting rocks in the eyes before his run. He was thinking of the BIG picture, always.

A bit more if one cares. Last seen The Champ at the 2008 Street Car SuperNats at The Strip in Vegas. He was there with his son Billy. Billy had prepped a nitrous BBF Mustang for Bob to run. That guy cut a .007 pass on one of his passes, and it was of course a Pro Tree!. Some call that a bad job of redlighting,,Lol!. I call it Bob Glidden experience. He went out early during Elims, but it was really cool to see him run again. Billy won Outlaw 10.5 with his Mickey Thompson backed PS car.@@DragBoss351Cleveland

Mr Glidden built some very fast Fords. What a legend. I was a wee kid watching NHRA on TV in the 70s and 80s. My mom had a Maverick and I had an aunt that had a Pinto. That Budweiser car was insane. Thanks for this video.

Another "Great" Bob Glidden video! I love seeing those days, it brings back tons of memories. As I've said many times, I was dirt dobbing when Mr. Glidden was tearing up the strip, but we ran the Clevelands too. I'm always amazed at how advanced he was on those engines. I could have used a few of those spare parts he had laying around myself lol.

Great video! Bob was then man! I sat on one of his slicks at Fremont in 82, and watched him and Etta change one of these mountain motors in his EXP. He wasn't doing a well then. That all changed a few years later with that Thunderbird!

This is such a great video. Just a Glidden fan here, graduated hs in 1975 and my car was a K code four speed mustang. My girlfriend lived in Franklin, IN and I lived on Indy's southside. So to get there was I65 south, take the Whiteland exit, west to Graham Road then south to Franklin where the RR tracks cross. Went by the Glidden's complex on the way there many times. Most times I would push the clutch in and give a high-rev salute. Thanks again.

Tim, love the retrospective. Through the 70's and 80's I was both a hard-core Chevy guy and tired of seeing the Glidden Cleveland head advantage. Nothing thrilled me more than seeing RMS take the title away and hold it until Lee Shepherd's death. But I came to appreciate Bob's work ethic and I even had a 4bbl Cleveland in my collection for a season. Thanks for posting.

Bob Glidden was a pioneer of sorts. He did all of his own engine development and testing. That is what it takes. Ford helped with financing and that was it.

To tell you the truth Rondell, ford did not do hardly anything for Glidden, he did not get tons of cash or parts, that is the irony. Truly a pioneer and ahead of his time.

I built a 71 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland when few were building this engine. We had the first and second set of Venolia pistons when the valve cutes on the first set were wrong. We had help from Earl Wade (Dyno Don's motor guru) with how the main oil passages need to be restricted and an external oil line run to keep oil in the bottom end. Moroso came out with a kit to do this a couple years later.

In the early seventies my dad built a model of Bob's red white and blue Pinto he gave it to him at the US Nationals and Bob gave him a picture of the car that was signed the picture was the size of a credit card and to this day my dad still carries it in his wallet my dad is 82 years old

I loved the fastback Mustang when I was a teenager. A friend of mine's big brother had, I think, a Mach II? It was very similar to the Nitro 9 in the beginning of this video. It was nothing for these cars to pull the front wheels up off the pavement. Back in the early 80's in Midwest City, Oklahoma, Air Depot Blvd was the main drag on Friday and Saturday nights, and I was lucky enough to cruise in the back seat a half a dozen times when I was 18, I think, or somewhere around that time. It was a tight fit back there lol but it was something to ride in! When I was 17, I got to drive a 67 GTO a friend had built and modified with a 3 speed on the floor and slick 50's on the back, and that thing would burnout from first to 3rd at a roll. I was on a new residential neighborhood street and burned out from one end of the block to the other, I don't know, two or three hundred feet? Man, the power it had! Fun days back then with all the street racing.

Once Bob started he didn't stop winning. He was the best Pro Stock driver and mechanic there ever was (in my opinion). I seen Bob run many times in IHRA at Bristol Tenn. How do you think Billy learned all he did. I'm not sure about his other son, but he was right there wrenching too. You talk about them covering the intake, but back then they were doing so much experimental work being done to to the intakes and the heads. All camps were doing it, and that is where all the power was coming from. Because once one team learned something to add a few HP then they all did it.That is why Pro Stock is so competitive. There isn't much room for improvement because the rules make them so close. So that is where your power comes from. Ronnie.

Very cool, such a legend. interesting to note the current sealed factory 5.0 class runs 9.0s at 150 in 3000lb cars. We have come along way, but it took guts from peeps like Glidden to pave the road.

I just built a boss cleveland engine and turned it into a 408 stroker full roller moter I have always thought that the cleveland was a great engine and after seeing these I'm glad I chose the engine and I built it for my 67 fairlane for a street rod you don't see many cars with a cleveland in them much anymore I wanted to be different thanks for the awesome video I used to have a model of the pinto years ago
