A headcanon I have about the demon hunters is that after Legion, most of them decided to travel the universe on the space ship (forgot its name) they hijacked on Mardum to bring the fight to other Legion worlds out in the cosmos. It would explain why they're seemingly no longer around, anyway.

Well. As someone who plays WoW on a european RP server and mained a DH for a while, I can indeed say that some did end up devouring a fel imp's heart (bit more formidable than the pesky tiny imps). That's part of my DH's story. It's been cause for a lot of amusement.

@@FalloutFM Blizzard will never return to the idea. They never do for good ones. People hated Garrison missions and they keep trying to bring them back every expansion they can. People hate arbitrary "main expansion resource" farms like Azerite or Artifact power, that's why every expansion has those now. They hate Titanforging and it's a staple of gearing now. Meanwhile we liked things like Class order halls and class identity and blizzard just dropped it after legion. Just... nothing. No more class themed quests or storylines. No "x class only" zones where you can meet other ppl from your class, potentially talk about builds or just light rp. The covenants in Shadowlands were a somewhat interesting expansion on the idea of COH, but they were fundamentally tied to a very bad expansion so they sunk with it. Man. All these years, people want their class identity to be recognized again. Can't believe it's been 8 years since Legion.

One of the lore tidbits that people overlook (and my favorite and best apologetic for why we need DH's at all) all demons unless killed in the twisting nether come back. DH can permanently kill a demon anywhere and at any time with no prep. The act of consuming a demon soul (which is very present in game) is passive. A warlock and Deathknight could I suppose trap a demon soul at the moment of death. Warlock is the easier of the two of course but it's an active choice to do and doesn't always pan out. For that reason alone especially in the book mentioned once the legion learns Illidan has an army of hunters (not just him who already terrified the legion), Kiljadian made it priority one to end the hunters.

We see a demon hunter with a different fighting style on Azsuna, she wears a scythe as weapon and is specialized at soul torture and interrogation. It's funny to think she had an demon inquisitor's hearth as meal during her training.

In the books it has been explained that most if not all of Illidan's Demon Hunters arrived before the black portal re-opened. We know how this happened with the blood-elves but every single night elf found his own little portal to outland before classic-players managed to do so.

I would love videos like this for every class. But also a majorly screwed up part is post Legion, you are now told your brothers and sisters in arms are now the enemy and the Night Elves have to fight the Blood Elves. I have to imagine that canonically the Illidari stayed neutral during BfA and stayed away. But I can't imagine the stalemate of a battle between Demon Hunters. I've definitely struggle to play a Demon Hunter in Dragonflight where there is little conflict.

Demon Hunters have no hard bonds to anybody. In the novel, you see Vandel come to terms with the fact that he will have to kill his own people (night elves of the Alliance) if he is threatened by them. That, and before their binding, Vandel and Ravael are relatively friendly, but after they become demon hunters, something as petty as losing a fight prompts Ravael to metamorphosis and attempt to kill Vandel, who fries him with a single spell. Vandel enjoyed killing Ravael so thoroughly that it took every ounce of willpower in his body to not start eating his corpse immediately after, and nobody present is concerned that two demon hunters just turned a non-lethal sparring match into a duel to the death. Point being, demon hunters do not have hangups about killing each other if they have cause. You can even see that in game with Altruis and Kayn, fighting over the loyalty of a guy who is dead for all they know.

They can join their race assigned factions if they choose to, but lore wise Demon Hunters and Deathknights exist outside of the main factions as neutral parties who allow their ranks to fight their own battles as they see fit while pursuing the overarching goals of their organizations.

funny thing is, there's a battlepet trainer NPC in dragonflight who's a demon hunter who took up pet battling because she wanted to keep busy after the defeat of the legion. i'd like to see the status of the demon hunters explored more "seriously" ingame at some point, but i thought that was a cute touch.

When demon hunters first came out, I came up with this silly scenario one day: So, a demon hunter walks into an inn and sits down at the bar. The owner at the bar looks at the demon hunter and asks "you look down, fella, what's wrong?" The demon hunter turns his head, sneering at the owner, his eyes covered with a ratty pale rag as green fel energy illuminates the cloth from behind. "I have sacrificed everything. What have you given?". At the other end of the bar sits a death knight, his hand causing the mug of ale to suddenly freeze until it bursts, the ale frozen solid and hitting the bar with a loud 'thud'. He looks at the demon hunter and says "sacrifice? Let me tell you a story...". Before the death knight can get another word out, the three hear a dry, hacking cough as they were scoffed at. The death knight and the demon hunter both turn to see a Forsaken sitting alone in a corner, a full mug of ale that he cannot drink and a plate of food he cannot eat. His body is mangled and torn, skin ravaged with undeath and eyes glazed over. He looks up at the death knight and the demon hunter, a look of disapproval on his face. "What do you know of sacrifices?".

Hah a morbid joke I can get behind. Although if we are talking of suffering and Sacrifice no creature alive in the Warcraft universe has probably suffered more than Illidan. Man spent 10,000 years chained below the earth with no real human contact, food or water in a cage barely a few feet across. All the while tormented by magic withdrawals, fel visions from his eyes granted by Sargaras and the thoughts his friends and family betrayed him. Despite the fact he played a major role in saving the world, killed more demons than anyone and laid the ground work for the world tree and moon wells. Finally gets free only to be banished by his brother, then killed by those he was trying to save, resurrected by those same people years later and then made to Jail Sargaras for all eternity. The man can’t catch a break. Lol

This is why even if they remove all race/class restrictions there will never be new Demon Hunter race choices. A Draenei after years of allying with other Warlocks in the Alliance might give it a chance, a Blood Elf may rediscover their Druidic roots, an Undead may rediscover their faith in the light and become a Paladin but lore-wise no one would ever willingly subject themselves to this especially after the Legion has already been defeated.

So far yes, only those who were part of the Illidari could be demon hunters- Broken/Krokuul, Fel Orcs, and Naga. Void Elves are also theoretically possible, but given the small population sizes of both groups and the specific allegiance changes needed, they’ll probably only add them because they’d require very little model work to do. Zandalari are also possible, as some old lore includes ‘demoniacs’ who summoned demons inside their own bodies. There would need to be a new generation of demon hunters to train (like the allied race death knights) to fight a new threat (like a Rusted Legion type thing) but if there was Zandalari would be first.

Yeah methinks Bliz just bit off more than they could chew. Entire new plane of existence, lore, re-retconning old lore, something is bound to be left behind. Like others comment, possible head canon may be most DH hijacked a ship to travel the twisting nether, exterminating the legion on other planets. Sod the army of the light, we got the army of darkness, kinda thing. A few DH may have stayed behind to wipe out legion remnants, and got involved as players with the shadowlands, but majority of the group was perhaps unaware it even happened.

@@mikfhan Shadowlands is literally the WORST expansion in terms of lore. The journey to the underworld is a common theme in fiction and mythology. Hercules did it, Tolkien did it, the story writes itself. Instead Blizzard turned it into a circle-jerk. Remember playing Horde? Remember the part where you get trapped in the Maw, and encounter the soul of Varian Wrynn? and you have to work out your differences with him to escape? No? That's because it DIDN'T HAPPEN. Remember playing Alliance? and you encounter the soul of Garrosh? and you have to work out your differences to escape? That's because it DIDN'T HAPPEN EITHER. A classic journey to the underworld involves confronting the past and coming to terms with it. Hercules went into the underworld to rescue his dead friend, Orpheus went to rescue his dead wife, Luthien went to rescue Beren, her dead husband. We got NOTHING. We didn't rescue Varian, we didn't rescue Garrosh, we didn't rescue Uther, or Arthas, or Grom, or any other fan favorite characters! We literally could have rescued EVERYBODY and brought back ALL THE CHARACTERS. The journey to the underworld is a story that writes itself, and Blizzard STILL FUCKED IT UP!

Great video Platinum. I love demon hunter lore (also a fellow dh main) but I wish it wasn't so inconsistent in different areas. For example, the inner demon thing is actually stated by Vandel in the Illidan novel to be untrue, he was mistaken to think it was a separate consciousness in his own mind and realizes that those impulses and demonic thoughts are simply his own thoughts. That, and the metamorphosis in game doesn't represent how it was described in the novel at all. If you go and watch the Illidan vs Arthas cinematic for WC3 reforged, Illidan's transformation at the end is actually I think the most accurate depiction of a dh metamorphosis (assuming you are basing it off the book)

I've always resonated with Illidan's story more than any other character in WoW because there's something really profound about the question: how can you defeat your enemy--how can you know they're your TRUE enemy--unless you've walked among them as one of them. Illidan is arguably the most embattled character in the lore. He's a pariah, misunderstood, and afflicted--and mostly for decisions he made. But he's true to his convictions beyond the shadow of a doubt because he's perpetually having to fight a war against the demon inside of him, and he knows he is one of the few with the strength to defeat it, even though it terrorizes him. Such a great anti-hero, and my guy to the core.

I love Demon Hunters. They have some of the best class fantasy in my opinion and I enjoyed leveling in Legion with them. Before I started playing wow on a regular basis I played it on my brother's account and only leveled till level 10ish. But when I heard Legion will come out and Demon Hunters are playable I knew I have to play the game. In addition I played heroes of the storm for a while and my favorite character was Illidan. Therefore I am a pretty big fanboy when it comes to Demon Hunters and daddy Illidan. The Illidan book is also worth reading and of course, I bought it. Thanks for this and all your other videos. They are so entertaining and I am always hyped when I see that you have uploaded. Keep doing this great work. I really appreciate it.

If you think about it, Illidan was a genius for doing what he did. The Burning Legion was amateur magic users who wanted to get powerful easily. Imagine the powers of Fel in the hands of an expert magic user? Like if Khadgar had Fel magic, the game would be over 3 expansions ago.

I'm currently reading William King's Illidan novel. I'm on the chapter where the new recruits, if you will, are being transformed into demon hunters. Reading the part where Vandel, one of the new recruits, is being trained and he's facing his demon(s) is just brutal. The experience which he goes through kept me glued to the book at work. I just couldn't stop reading it during my break. 10/10 video ♥

i need to play somehow this whole experience. would be cool like a challenge, make a n/belf (warrior, hunter or rogue) and do the iromman challenge, with no deaths all through the tbc zone, and once you get to be enough lvl to create a dh, create it as your previous character. i think that would be cool
