I’ve been a neurologist for 20 years, did EMG fellowship. Mostly clinic-based, took my share of stroke call and hospital rounding every 4-6 weeks. In a general neurology practice, in addition to headaches there is a great deal of low back and neck pain. Lots of dizziness, syncope. Many people referred with vague symptoms like weakness and numbness in any and every location. Video does very nice job overall, but leaves out these outpatient conditions. I also in fact a lot of Botox, Mostly for chronic migraine. In a community hospital, most common reason for referral is encephalopathy, meaning the patient is not waking up or confused. More than half the time, it’s just a matter of too much sedative medication. The part about conditions being progressively worsening is definitely true, in particular I see a great deal of Parkinson’s disease and have known for many years. Same is true for Alzheimer’s. It is emotionally tough to see patients and families deal with the progression. That’s my two cents.

I have been a neurologist for 30 years and consider it the best job in the world. That being said, the emotional tool af seeing chronically ill patients can be draining. This was a great video, but you forgot one of the most challenging, rewarding and complex disease , multiple sclerosis. We have over 20 medicines on the market for MS, which requires thorough knowledge of the immune system as well as the nervous system. Rapid advances in all areas make the learning curve very steep, so get ready for a lot of reading to stay current. The reason it is the best job in the world is that, while you can’t cure many people, you can improve the quality of life of the majority of patients, and you rely on your intellect to do it. At last you get rewarded for being a nerd, and since most of the guys who used to pick on you are either digging ditches or dead, you have a good deal of respect in the medical community and in general.

A slow doctor is always better AND faster than no doctor at all. I agree neurology or frankly almost any medical career is extremely stressful. You need to have the right kind of thinking, motivation, and ability to keep calm in order to succeed. But failures will always happen. Shaming and blaming yourself/doctors for them rather than learning and improving is a bigger waste of time. We desperately need more neurologists; there's never enough of them.

I really love neuroscience and I want to study it as my major, but for the longest time, I wasn't too sure what exactly I wanted to do as a career. I was always kind of in between if I'd like to work as a neurologist or a psychiatrist because I don't know if it's the mental aspect or the physiological aspect that intrigues me the most regarding the nervous system. However, after watching the videos of the two careers, I've found myself to like psychiatry more than neurology, but I certainly am not too sure yet. hell, I'm only 17 years old, I'm sure I'll figure it out soon 😭

Because the physical and mental side (PTSD) are linked together in this injury. - Greatest advancement in treatment in Neurology is non-pharmaceutical. Instead using motor actions or vestibular stimulation can help repair parts of the brain. See the Carrack Institute and functional neurology. Drugs they are finding are now doing more harm then good. - My favorite Neurologist was also my Chiropractor (See DACNB). He fits the personalty profile you mentioned here as well! I love the brain and everything related it since forever. I mainly want to do research and feel neutral about having patients. I am pursuing a Neuroscience BS and will have to choose to either go for pHD (pure research but the pay relatively sucks for the amount of debt I’d be in), or I could try to get into medical school and do academic neurology (I’d still do research and the pay is much better, but it’s riskier because I’d need to spend more time in school and if I fail or drop out at any point, my life and parents’ lives would be ruined from the debt). I don’t even want to consider neurosurgery because that would take even more years and is so much more competitive, making it extremely risky and although the pay is amazing, the hours in the operating room are far too intense and there would be no time for research or living my life.

I have been interested in nurology lightly. I dont think im going to become a nurologist but i recently had a friend with bels palsy and i was able to help him minimize the dammage that having bels palsy can cause. All i had to do was tell him weather he had bels or had had a stroke and tell him to get some eye drops cause he could not close his eye. Poor bastard he had just got evicted and i think it was effecting his immune system. Plus his doctor would not see him cause he is sort of a difficuilt case. Its always good when you can help one of your friends.
