So You Want to Be a PEDIATRIC INTENSIVIST [Ep. 37]

So you want to be a pediatric intensivist. You love children and want to help take care of some of the sickest patients in the hospital. Let’s debunk the public perception myths and give it to you straight. This is the reality of pediatric critical care. Pediatric critical care is the specialty of medicine focused on the treatment of seriously ill children from birth to 18 years old and beyond.
Much like pediatricians, pediatric intensivists are the masters of physiology and pharmacology. They use the wide breadth of knowledge from medical school and residency and apply it at the bedside on a daily basis.
To become a pediatric intensivist, you must complete 4 years of medical school, followed by 3 years of pediatric residency, and 3 years of pediatric critical care fellowship. Some will opt for an additional chief year during residency to increase their competitiveness for fellowship.

I think another important factor to consider for PICU is that there will always be unexpected, sudden changes in patients, so you have to be okay with always being on your toes, like in emergency medicine. And you don't only respond to your own patients but also to patients in other units who may need higher level of care so you'll be running to other parts of the hospital. Thus, there will be multiple interruptions while you're trying to work. If you are the type who wants things under control and for things to go as planned, this may not suit you.

Why do physicians who choose peds get penalized with lower salaries?

It’s actually a good reason, which is that there’s not a lot of sick kids out there compared to adults. I guess the lower salary also weeds out people who are only in it for the money, so more pediatricians are passionate about their jobs.

Physician salary in any speciality is directly related to how many invasive procedures they perform. That's why surgical specialities are best paid. General pediatricians typically don't perform many invasive procedures, as those cases get referred out.

I'm 14 and have wanted to be a doctor since..... forever !! . My parents do support me eventhough they are a bit doubtful , and are not completely sure if i will make it. But they did say they will support me no matter what, and i love them for it!!!!. I hope i will make it. Just an addition - your patients are sick. That's why they are in an ICU. Don't expect cute looking children. Also while the mortality rate is lower than adults, your patients still will sometimes die. And if you cant handle a mother screaming at the loss at her child or children on chemo fighting/dying to cancer don't go into this. While It's a beautiful specialty just go in With both eyes open.
