49% of physicians report being burnt out, but which specialties have the greatest rates of burnout?🔥 After 3 years of steady increase, physician burnout and depression finally declined for the first time since 2020. However, there’s still a long way to go to get those numbers down.
Let’s dig into the findings of the 2024 Medscape Physician Burnout & Depression Report: www.medscape.com/slideshow/20...

Neurosurgery actually has a surprisingly lower burnout rate than one would expect, it is 52% compared to the overall resident average of 51%. In some smaller hospitals apparently it was one of the lowest burnout specialty. Possibly because it's so selective that only people who really want to do it end up doing it

i'm still in med school. the pre-clinical/didactic director is an EM doc, and the way she acts and talks to us, it's like she wants us to burn out as students, like it's normal. and not just studying our asses off, she literally told us over christmas break, "maybe you guys shouldn't go home for the holidays. or, instead of seeing your family for 3 days, see them for one." yeah, that's great for mental health.

During the medical internship, do you rotate through different areas??? In residency, you are stuck in the chosen area of your interest, but that first year of internship, do you rotate???
@uo.2103
@uo.2103 25 күн бұрын
You rotate in the last 2 years of medical school (depending on the school). Throughout residency you rotate within your specialty. For example a general surgery resident rotates in cardiovascular surgery, burn surgery, ICU, GI, transplant, etc.

Yall really need to do a video on Veterinary Medicine and One Health. Veterinarians are critical for human and animal health, often on the front lines of zoonotic disease (HPAI, Swine Flu, Rabies, ect). We also do all the same things as in human med, but our paitents cant talk. Its truly a wonderful field and I truly think some level of physician burnout would be solved if people really considered vet med before jumping directly to human med.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter if you are burned out,what matters is that you are happy in your field. That way, you can balance between work and home with family. If there are more physicians in a particular field, the burnouts and burdens are lessened. Therefore, accounting for more free time between them.

I have some reservations about blaming homeless patients for faking their condition so that they receive shelter and a meal. I understand the ER is - or should be -a place used for real medical emergencies but lets blame systems for not adequately addressing a person's social or economic needs and not people themselves. What about the SDOH? Isn't health and well-being related to and affected by issues such as income, education and employment? Perhaps some homeless patients might be guilty of malingering but I'm sure a large majority are acutely or chronically ill because they don't have access to a primary care doctor, NP or PA.

It didn’t seem like he was blaming the homeless, simply acknowledging the strain on emergency departments caused by patients incorrectly going there for services best provided by other means. Obviously the issue is derived from a misallocation of resources and some people having less options than others, but we should be able to acknowledge that a problem exists without jumping to misconstrue an important fact

@@Niyariii Fair point. My point is this: when you have no income what other services are there to access? I'm sorry to point this out but in the US, health isn't treated as a fundamental human right but is instead regarded as a matter of privilege for those who can afford care. Although he may not have meant to construe all the homeless as vagrants that was definitely mentioned directly in the video. This contributes to stigma and stereotyping. Acknowledge the problem yes but we should be mindful of our beliefs and values and how they impact our practice.
@Niyariii

@@shches8480 I don’t think anyone is disputing the idea that impoverished people lack options for services, you’re not stumbling onto any hidden knowledge. As far as I can tell the video maker simply said homeless people put additional strain on our medical services, which is true. At no point was anyone blamed for being homeless, he simply acknowledged a reason as to why our systems are overwhelmed. I just don’t see how you interpreted such a banal statement in such a negative manner, it seems like a bit of a stretch I edited my comment because you seem like a genuine person trying your best to advocate for those of us who have the least. I hope I didn’t come off as rude
