@Tripps2564

A few things I would add: subspecialties of Family Medicine vary in their scope and responsibilities. 1) OB alone without complex cases or C-section privileges can be done with simply getting enough cases in residencies. C-sections often require either a fellowship or 40 primary C-sections being performed at a full spectrum Family Medicine program that caters to OB. 2) ER can be done without a fellowship, again with enough rotations in residency, but that often is only at lower acuity ERs in smaller cities, towns and in rural areas. I'm not sure if a fellowship would allow for jobs in larger ERs. 3) Local high school Sports medicine can be done without a fellowship, but all Professional and Olympic doctors are fellowship trained. 4) To my knowledge, Hospice and Geriatrics usually don't require fellowships. In essence, Family Medicine is a rubber band. The specialty is flexible as Family Docs must be capable to see every age and assist with many procedures in lower density areas like towns and rural areas. That said, if you find yourself in urban USA, you can easily focus on one aspect of medicine. In effect, few family doctors are true generalists anymore. OB-Peds, Adult, ER, Sports, Hospice, etc, all require specific skills and no doctor can manage them all BUT family doctors scope is broader (and as a necessary consequence not deeper) than most specialists. In terms of respect and prestige, its depends. As a PGY-3 in Family Medicine, I can honestly say that a good family doctor is respected. Patients do not seem to care about MD, DO or even PA, ARNP etc as long as they get good care. Obviously, prestige seems higher in surgical specialties (as does money), but at the end of the day that happiest docs love what they do and surround themselves with individuals who also value it. Working in underserved areas is a great way to gain that intrinsic value and communal engagement in your work. That said, patients may be more demanding of credentials or question you more if they are upper middle class (though I haven't seen that very much personally). For those considering family medicine, ask yourself if you like everything. If you want the option to do OB or ER in addition to other things. If you like to be the base of the healthcare system. We are often unsung heroes who don't receive the praise of MFM, Ortho or NICU, but who are truly the most valuable to healthcare. That said, if you want to do IM fellowships or anything surgical other than C-sections, family medicine is not for you. Peace

I remember the stigma attached to certain specialties when I was a medical student. When I rotated through intensive care, the attending was really impressed by me and asked me what I was considering. I said either Family Medicine or Psychiatry, to which he scoffed and said my potential would be wasted in those fields, only people who don't know what they're doing go into those fields. I should do something useful like Surgery or Internal Medicine.

In my country family medicine doctors are really important. They are considered the gate keepers of the health care system. For any medical problem that isn't an immediate emergency you will have to see your family medicine first.

This is excellent. I've had to have many specialists, but now tired of going to so many docs, my local doc (known him all my life) for family medicine, IS THE BEST. I'm in a rural area, and he tackles everything of mine! They were in a private practice, but a larger system bought them out, bc they are older (70s! but still awesome & there's a 2nd one - same practice - in my small town with him & then there's the small hospital with a clinic & excellent ER that is essential for our location.) My Dr is an MD, his partner Dr is a DO. My Dr is actually the one who has helped me be better, even after all the health issues in the past & genetic, he listens to me & just cares. He's been wealthy bc back in the day, they made more (late 70s & 80s, they were able to be more customized & see more ppl bc they didn't have to deal with computers yet lol) plus he has been a great Dr. You were so accurate with this video! They definitely have to be into helping & listening to all demographics of ppl bc they get EVERYTHING. ❤️

PGY1 in FM here - family medicine is very training dependent! At my institution we can realistically primary 50+ C-sections and are certified as OB Fellowship equivalent. We spend about half of our residency on hospital services (medicine, ob, peds) and many of our graduates work as hospitalists, in ERs, or in a combination of both in rural or international settings. Many of us do colonoscopies and EGDs as well. So, I am just saying to consider the breadth of training and know that you can get very different experiences in different locations! I for one appreciate the absolutely wide breadth that my program trains in. edit: for number of primary C/Ss. Some of our residents will get more, some will less. Some have been primary surgeon on dramatically more! There is some variance year to year.

Could you do a video (or videos) on what to expect in the different years of medical school (like 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year, and so on)?

In Sweden family medicine residency is 5 years. The compensation is one of the highest among alla specialities making more money than a neurosurgeon .

If you are only thinking about money so radiology. If you like both money and you enjoy practicing so plastic plastic surgery If you are into pure medicine and u don’t care about money so neurology or cardiology

I wasn’t interested in family medicine until I worked in an FM office this summer! If I were to become an EM fam med doc, would it be possible to go back to clinic-like primary care after years in the ED? (I think EM is so cool, but I am concerned about the burnout rate)

Hey ! I’m a pre-med interested in EM and FM. My concern was w/ the over saturation of EM physicians, the severely suffering job market, and the burnout. But the field is cool! I’m conflicted. To answer your question- yes this is possible.

What’s the difference between family medicine and internal medicine?

Internal medicine docs deal with adults while family medicine docs deal with the entire family including children, teens, adults, and seniors.

Along with the previous reply, the best comparison I've heard is IM is great inpatient, good outpatient. FM is great outpatient, good inpatient. This is in terms of general practice obviously not including subspecialties.
