1993. The year I recorded the official video off a chart show, on a TDK VHS cassette. "Why can't we not be Sober, why can't we start this over?" Andy Wood of Mother Love Bone couldn't perform sober. The song was about him. He passed away in 1990.

The wailing of the guitar sends you into this uncomfortable state and then Maynard starts his part of the performance, conveying feeling through his movements and actions. I think it's brilliant.

Maynard did not keep that Mohawk hair style + Orange Pijamas dress up for many years - except for the 92 - 94 period i think . I saw them 3 times during that phenomenal 90's period when they emerged on European Festivals (in Belgium for my case ) . I could observe that the public at the time was shocked at his way of singing , movements on stage + the strong musical metal prog style displayed . It was unique to discover and exciting to experience .

I’m not an addict in the traditional way, but I really resonate with this song as the ‘highs’ of mania in bipolar disorder are pretty much the same as many narcotics and some people intentionally make themselves manic because they like how it feels or only feel creative when ‘high’. It’s dangerous because it can last for weeks and like alcohol and drugs your thinking is severely impaired. I have done this in the past and regretted it! It’s really really tricky when your brain makes it’s own drugs. Thankfully (I guess?) my highs have been mixed episodes lately (symptoms of mania and depression simultaneously) and that is very very unpleasant so I’m doing my best to keep myself steady to avoid it.

Especially when you have headphones. Its a whole different experince. If you like the live videos because you want to see if the band can pull off a good show.Dont worry they can! Lol The band don't like when people bring in cameras or videos because they want the audience to be fully Immersed into the musical performance.

There were not any good cameras back in the day, and they were pretty underground. They did have an unofficial live recordings place back in the day, but doubt they were of this quality. Crazy nonetheless but being how popular this version is doesn't even give Tool justice. I still can't find most of the shows I went to back from '98-2003, maybe audio recordings at best.

Hey Danny, you said you didn't have the lyrics. Here they are for you. Maynard tends to use his music as his own therapy. Thats why a lot of the time it seems real. Because it is. There's a shadow just behind me, Shrouding every step I take, Making every promise empty, Pointing every finger at me. Waiting like a stalking butler Who upon the finger rests. Murder now the path of "must we" Just because the son has come. Jesus, won't you fucking whistle Something but the past is done? Jesus, won't you fucking whistle Something but the past is done? Why can't we not be sober? I just want to start this over. Why can't we drink forever? I just want to start this over. I am just a worthless liar. I am just an imbecile. I will only complicate you. Trust in me and fall as well. I will find a center in you. I will chew it up and leave, I will work to elevate you Just enough to bring you down. Mother Mary, won't you whisper Something but the past is done? Mother Mary, won't you whisper Something but the past is done? Why can't we not be sober? I just want to start this over. Why can't we sleep forever? I just want to start this over. I am just a worthless liar. I am just an imbecile. I will only complicate you. Trust in me and fall as well. I will find a center in you. I will chew it up and leave, Trust me [5x] Why can't we not be sober? I just want to start things over. Why can't we sleep forever? I just want to start this over. I want what I want [4x]
