As an immigrant 2nd grader in the US for less than 2 years, I learned the “N-word” from some Black kids I often played with. Once during art class, we got to do anything we wanted. I decided to draw whales and color them white, brown, and black to show that different kids could get along. When asked by the teacher why the different colored whales, I answered well these ones are white, the brown ones are Filipino like me, and the black ones are “N-words”. I immediately and loudly learned that this word was not OK to say and got sent home after school with a note. 🤷‍♂️

那个 (na ge) Definitely not a filler word. This is very interesting. As a Chinese, it's a word that is essential in a speech. It's a speech word *demonstrative pronoun* for ideas, things, any inanimate objects, living animals (sometimes), people (very rare and rude because one is referring to a person as a thing). Most of the time it's used when *you do not know the name* of the item you are referring to when speaking. It's so essential in speech we if do not use it, we do not have the pronoun for "there that thing" in the situation when that thing is unknown, vague or hard to describe. Without it, in chinese grammar SVO structure, it will become VO. While in OSV, it will be come SV structure. To make things worst, it is similar in pronunciation to 哪个 (nei ge) in some accent. Which is the pronoun for "which". To compromise we can use the word 那 which has the meaning of there/that/which.

Thank you to the student for clarifying the NAACP was made for “all people of color,” including Asians. Anyway, this same thing (i.e. teacher’s suspension) happened with a Jamaican teacher in Florida that follows the Rastafarian way and used an Ethiopian word that sounded like the “N” word to describe a child’s hairstyle. The word actually meant dreadlocks and the context of use fit (just like this Chinese example), but the Jamaican teacher was suspended anyway. I think the problem is repeatedly when these judgements are executed without discussion and understanding. Thanks for sharing.

The thing is that everyone is both average AND unique. Average in that any experience, thought, feeling or emotion that each of us has ever had has been pretty much been experienced by millions, if not billions, of people over the past several thousands of years. Unique, because no one else can live in our particular body and experience the world through its five senses. My father was a scientist. When he got old, I sometimes got annoyed by him always talking about 'problems'. Even the smallest thing could be a 'problem'. But then I understood for him 'problem' was the method of coping with things: as a scientist, he 'problemized' things, because that was the start of analysing the situation and coming up with possible ways to solve the issue. So then the word 'problem' took on a positive notion: making the effort to define a situation, debate it, look at it from different angles and look for solutions.

So it's racist to say a women can't wear an afro in the military, but not a man? Men are forced to shave their head when they get in and have extremely strict standards for their hair. Nobody gets to just wear their hair natural, so these claims seem a bit rediculous. Everyone had the same exact standards and the black women who served with me, worse their hair the same exact way white women did. Everyone was held to the same exact standards and men had it even stricter then women, so it just seems a bit much. Especially considering that part of every uniform is a hat. The dress code is done with the idea that you always have some kind of hat on. The military isn't for everyone and it seems rediculous that we are lowering the standards on everything to be more inclusive. The military isn't a place for inclusiveness. It's a place where jobs must be done as best as possible and every rule is set to ensure that happens
@nedhill1242
@nedhill1242 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. This is nonsense. The military is about uniformity and part of basic training is to drum the individuality out of people. When he brought up white privilege during that conversation I was dumbstruck. Tons of white women have curly hair and hate it. Not because of anything other than it's a pain in the ass. My blue eyed blonde Irish sister is retired Air Force and she had to wear her hair short. There are legit reasons for this and guys all have to have very short hair. lol acting black. UM, NO! Blacks in Africa and other countries don't act or talk black from an American perspective. This is so dumb. There is no such thing as white privilege. It's in-group versus out-group. This is basic psychology. I like Sam and what he's trying to do, but he is all in on white privilege and systemic racism, etc. and it's all BS.
@trleith
@trleith Жыл бұрын
But it's been public policy for at least 75 years the military *is* for everyone -- in peacetime it's a mechanism of "social improvement" and specifically a way to help socialize people into the working or middle class. It's very deliberate. And these days "everyone" includes women. If you want to sum up the regulation it comes to "Do what you want as long as it doesn't keep your headgear from fitting properly or draw attention to itself." But because we're a nation of adolescents, regulations can't be this straightforward, so we hear about inches and symmetry and uses of dyes.
@nedhill1242
@nedhill1242 Жыл бұрын
@@trleith very well said. JD Vance, Glenn Loury, & Thomas Sowell are among the many extremely successful people that were brought out of poverty and educated thanks to the military. I have always been amazed at the ending of Band of Brothers when they talk about the success that each one of those men had after World War II, and how most of them went on to extremely successful careers, many of them using the G.I. Bill. Most of them never would’ve stepped foot on a college campus, or had anything other than a very average life as an adult had it not been for the military and the people they were around. And yes, that was a very special group of people, but that’s actually a common tale. The military also does a great job of taking people from divergent cultures or people that have massive egos or lack discipline, and put all of them on a path of success that they otherwise never would’ve found. But now we’re destroying it with woke & trans ideology. Our enemies are laughing at us! Eisenhower and Patton, and even FDR see people like General Milley and Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, George Bush, Joe Biden, running our military, and they are spinning in their graves!

@nedhill1242

@@merc9nine Because if it doesn’t fit tightly, it doesn’t do any good. Players in the NFL white and black with long hair have their helmets come off a lot more often. You should be required to have short hair in the NFL otherwise sign a waiver that says you will not hold the NFL responsible for CTE . Because the helmet doesn’t work if it isn’t on tightly. If you’re a white guy with long hair that helmet is going to slide right off especially if someone grabs it and the facemask. So every player in the military and NFL should be required to have short hair. My sisters retired from the Air Force. All the women had to wear short hair. Not as short as men, of course, but that would be short and a certain style. No one complained. When you join the military, you sort of sign away part of your rights. That’s part of the deal. Welcome to the world of woke!

Not all classes are equal. In most four year curriculums, there are classes that almost all are required to take regardless of the student's chosen major. Sociology is one of those classes. Therefore about 50% of Penn State's 80,000 students will end up taking this course. Also, some courses are better suited for lecture type (think of history, economics, entry level biology and in this case sociology) where a professor has a monologue in the teaching process. A math class which requires a different type of teaching process will have a much smaller student to teacher ratio. Additionally, I am sure with the KZbin videos posted, this professor/course is quite popular and there are a large amount of students trying to get into this particular class. So yes, this particular class is quite profitable for Penn State. However, that fact cannot be extrapolated to the entirety of all of Penn State's courses and their professors/students.

This was good. Reminds me of a time when I was young and was dating a Spanish speaking boy. We were at dinner with his parents . He was pinching my side under the table and l finally snapped at him to "Stop Pinching me!". His mother went pale and was very upset. He was delirious with laughter. HE finally did explain that PINCHING sounds very similar to a very inappropriate word used in Spanish. It was all cleared up and even his mom found it funny.😅

Around 35:00 the professor question was never going to generate a separate answer, in my opinion. She’s facing both the real time pressure of hundreds of people staring at her, the possibility of hundreds of thousands seeing it online, and the social consequences of her answer. I don’t believe most people would have given a difference answer to “before moving, did you have different perceptions of black and white in america” given these circumstances. It’s much easier to lie in this scenario

The military regs are weird because no one can wear their "natural" hair. There are length and bulk requirements for men, and women must put their hair up if it is long. I will say it is straight fucked up to be made the straighten your hair just to conform to regs, as the aforementioned regs do not require such levels of work and potential damage to the hair. As an aside I do believe that afros can be pulled into a bun to be able to wear a cover. As I spent most of my career on subs I have little exp with female hair regs so milage may vary. Great class as always.

It's called path of least resistance. Water does the same. Electricity does the same. We do the same. You can have a child matching your skin color, easy mode (well.. you still have to be a parent and all), vs. a black child for white parents, figuring out he is adopted before you can count to three, you have no control on when to break it to him. Not to mention on what the hell do you know about being black as a white parent? Much harder to raise a kid that way, so why would you? It makes sense.

I don't think that Korean American kid knows or understand any Korean. He might be ethnically Korean but it's obvious he doesn't understand Korean or Korean culture. I'm white American but know more about Korea and Korean than that kid. I've lived in Korea for little over 2 years and know that the word "Heuk Hyung" isn't a racist word. It doesn't mean "black dude" but "black older brother". It's actually a way to call a black man in respectful way. In Korea, the word "Hyung" (older bro) is added at the end when you want to call someone(male) respectfully. For example, if your name is "Sam" they will call you "Sam Hyung" to show respect. I'm from Tennessee so some of my coworkers called me "Tenne Hyung" when I lived there.

It can be used similar to how we would use "bro" but still with the honorific respect. Like you would only use 형 to someone same age or a bit older in age but only within a few years. With someone more than just a few years older there are other honorific you would use depending on your relationship with them. So it could be used in a way to mean like "bro" but it would still imply respect and not an insult or slur.

Its about intention over the actual word, all words are just sounds coming out our mouths there isn't any sound you could make that's worse than any other, A word isn't offensive unless its used with the intention to cause a bad thing to happen or upset or degrade someone. Its all about reading intention and context over the word itself. the sperm doner situation you'd of course pick someone that looks like the dad so that he feels like its his child and look at family history like health conditions and disabilities to give your kid the best chance its not racist. if there was two white people with a black baby you'd assume one of them must be a step parent or the kid is adopted where as you wont have those assumptions make if it looks like your child. Dads already don't get treated as equal to mothers as a parent teachers at parents night and doctors tend to look at and talk to the mother over the father. Being seen as a step parent on top of that to your child isn't something id choose id want them to think its my kid even if it isn't biologically means less questions and you are seen more as the kids parent.

The military has had their standards on grooming mostly for safety reasons. Men couldn't have facial hair so that O2 masks would fit tight to their face. Hair has to be put up or short to fit protective helmets etc...but if your job only consists of say mainly desk work, where there is not a safety issue, as long as it looks professional in uniform and well kept, I see no reason why women of any race can't have their natural hair. Personally, as a white woman with crappy straight hair, I appreciate women with curly hair doing their thing. It is so beautiful in my eyes. Don't be afraid to do you, whatever you decide, It's all good!!!

If you just google AR 670-1, it will explain it with pictures. But the short answer is no, you don’t have to keep the shaved to stubble haircut that you see in the boot camp scenes of movies.
