American football is a collision sport. Although, you're likely to see only a few hits like these in a game. What makes it fascinating to watch is that there are a lot of rules, plays, schemes, and moving parts to the game. It does take a couple of seasons for the casual viewer to catch on, though.

There are some rules for how to tackle/block. The ones that come up the most: You can't lead with your helmet in a tackle and impact the opponent's helmet. That's called helmet to helmet. It's acceptable I'd you lead with your shoulder and the helmet to helmet contact occurs by accident. You can't grab by the neck of the jersey/pads in the back. That's called a horse collar. You can't block in the back. You can tackle the player with the ball from behind, but you can't if they don't have the ball. They've found a really happy medium in recent years between safety and action. Most of this was legal when it happened.

@John Thomas We ant Rome, this is not the gladiator arena. Actors get paid just as big it's not the risk of injury or death that they are paid on. It is because they are the best. And the business (sports teams) wants the best to come in and entertain so they get the best viewer ship to make the most money. Go watch the movie Concussion. I've got a million of 'em... The slang you heard like "drilled" simply means that the "victim" of the hit got hit really hard. The players are trained and rewarded for their ferocity on the field. Offensive linemen- the "big ones" who protect the other players by "blocking" get hit in the head an average of 10,000 times during the span of their playing time. This is from childhood until they retire from the NFL. So brain damage is becoming a "thing" among the veterans. There are some really messed up stories about that. Look up Junior Seau (that's his name), Dave Duerson, Mike Webster, Darrell Dawkins for just a few. Aaron Hernandez is also suspected of suffering from the condition of CTE.

Most of those hits are considered illegal. During each game like European Football (Soccer) officials (referees) toss yellow flags for penalties depends who are penalized: defense or offense. They lose or gained yardage during each turn up to 4 downs. Main goal is a touchdown (try in rugby or goal in soccer), but in order to reach touchdown team (offense) needs a 1st down for new set of downs.

Yes, people have died in this sport. Chucky Mullins was a kid from our area that died, his story is on youtube. Then on youtube search simply "Tatum Stingley" for a story of a player that gets paralyzed, and the player who was NOT sorry for doing it. Then watch the youtube video entitled "Gregg Williams Saints Bounty Audio" to hear a coach instruting his players to INTENTIONALLY hurt players, and to "go for the head". It's freaking SPOOKY! He and his head coach were suspended for a year for this, but only after winning the SUPER BOWL!! Best wishes!

That hit on lucky number eleven ended his career. Mo Lewis (defense) hit number eleven Drew Bledso. He kind had a ruptured spleen or some such. A bit of trivia is that the backup QB was Tom Brady (you’ve probably heard of him). That knockout hit started Brady’s career. One last thing, you’d asked before how long do they last. The NFL Avg. career is 3.3 years.

As long as it's not in the head or neck it's legal with some exceptions. You can't hit late (after the play is over). If the QB is in the pocket (back to pass) you also can't go for the knees. If a player slides feet first he's giving himself up, so you can't hit him then. They'll call fouls when the QB is on the receiving end of a dirty hit a bit quicker than the other players because the QB is the most important guy on the team. Unnecessary roughness is a 15 yard penalty, if it's against the defense it also carries an automatic first down. Those apply to hitting the guy with the ball. You can hit players that don't have the ball as well, it's usually blocking. (An offensive player attempts to knock a defensive player backwards, sideways, etc. to make room for his teammate with the ball. In those cases the blocks must come from the front of the player being blocked, or the side. Blocking from the back is a penalty. 10 yards if above the waist, 15 yards if below the waist. You also cannot blindside block anymore. The game used to be rougher than it is today.

@belinda96963 жыл бұрын
The offense is smaller and can run fast to carry the ball and the defense are the wall that prevents them from getting to the in-zone goal some of the defense can be 6'7" tall and 300 lbs. imagine that hitting you at full speed, that's why they need the helmets, mouthguards, and pads to help keep them from being injured(sometimes for life) or worse and that is why these players in NFL get paid very well to play also.

Keep in mind that you're seeing individual plays from 3+ hour games, and those clips range in dates from the 70's through to I think last year. Yes, those big hits happen and yes some of them are penalties but most were legal, clean and good plays. You could watch multiple full games, or even a full season, and not see some of those 'big hits' happen. They happen, but it's not like it happens on every play or even in every game.

The skinnier guys (still usually over 6 feet tall and 200 lbs) are usually wide receivers, cornerbacks or safeties. Quarterbacks too. The big burly dudes are the linebackers, defensive tackles and defensive ends. The huge guys are the offensive linemen...guards tackles and center. The guys that are usually shorter but thick, with huge thighs are the running backs. The big tall guys who can't run very fast but can catch and block are the tight ends.

"Lick" is American slang for a hard hit. Some of these plays were illegal, but most of them were actually clean hits, at least at the time the games were played. Some of the rules have become more strict in recent years. When I played high school and college football, from 1978-1985, it was pretty much anything goes. And if you notice, most of the guys that are getting hit are getting right back up again. These plays were about half and half between professional games and college games. The head injuries in football have gotten to a point where Will Smith has made a movie about it. They've taken steps to eliminate "targeting" (aiming towards the head/neck, a defender launching themselves at an opponent, or even a defender hitting a receiver too hard right as they're catching the ball) but to the point that there are hits that are viewed by many as clean hits (not aiming for the head/neck but sometimes resulting in it when the offensive player ducks low at the last possible moment) are getting defensive players kicked out of games for attempting to do their job, even offensive players for hard blocks (see 7:22). Many of the hits in this video are either from a time before football started to crack down on the most violent hits (which in part came about from the over $1 billion settlement the NFL reached with former players after they filed a class-action lawsuit) or were "flagged" (penalized) for unsportsmanlike conduct, some of which resulted in ejections. Final thought (sort of): this clip must only be known about by Nebraska fans because I never see it in these compilations but if you want to see another devastating hit watch this. Kind of old school but still one hell of a hit. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJzah6xpqrB4aqM

2:57 very few of these clips are long enough to show the flag and the penalty assessment. And contrary to everyone saying most of these were legal until recently, it's been well over 10 years since intentional targeting (helmet-helmet strike) could get you suspended and about 10 since unintentional targeting was made a penalty... spearing (leading hit with the helmet, and arms down) has been penalized for 34 years now. Roughing the passer (hitting QB late after the throw), defensive pass interference (hitting the receiver before the ball arrives), horse-collar tackles, chop blocks, clipping, facemasks, all illegal for decades or more. You aren't given enough of the video to see the gridiron football penalty process because it's quite deliberate since play stops for downs and the line is reset. They can take their time, each instance here could have been 30-45 seconds worth of deliberation. Longer if an injured man needs to be taken care of... ED. 3:01 flag thrown in from the left. Flags are weighted handerchiefs, they're all yellow, the ref will throw his hat instead if he's run out of flags.

A lot of the hits where you can tell it’s older footage were legal hits at the time. Any time watching these and you see a yellow flag get thrown toward where the play ended are going to be penalties. The NFL (pro) and NCAA (collegiate/amateur) have become much more cognizant of player safety in recent years (mostly because of the possibility of legal litigation). The hits where guys are going helmet to helmet, or shoulder to helmet are totally illegal now. Leading with the crown of the helmet is an automatic ejection from games now and a huge fine in the NFL.

I hate when Europeans watch this first. It is actually the most fun game your gonna play in your life.
