We hear so many people new to art say they feel pressure to share their private sketchbooks online, like popular influencers whose work looks impossibly perfect, and worry that they can't measure up. We think it's important to remember that a lot of what we see from popular creators are really auditions, displays of finished art intended to show the artist at their best (and that includes "sketchbook tours"). There's nothing at all wrong with that, but every artist needs (and deserves) a private space to develop, experiment, and exceed their current abilities, even if it means not every effort results in finished art.

I completely agree with what you said about 'how can you expect your art to look like someone else's who has put in more practice' everyone is at a different stage in their journey and we need to try our best to remember that ❤

'I should only be comparing my art to my past work, to see my improvment. Wishing my art looked as good as someone who has put in more practice than I have, is foolish, and only ended up hurting my feelings... The only way to improve is with patience and practice and since I'm committed to do that for the rest of my life, I'm very optimistic about where my art skills will be in the future' I absolutely loved listening to those words. They touched my heart in such a special way. What a timely message to hear 🙏🏻 Thank you ❤

Awesome! Your artwork is aesthetic, arrtactive and absolutely good feeling in this art vlog. 💖 So I too think that appropriate social media is helpful as an artist, but excessive immersion is a problem. Thank you for sharing and letting me comment! ✨💕😍

Social media can make us so hard on ourselves. I find I feel better the less time I spend online and then mostly Instagram. The encouragement has been nice but I do sometimes find myself wishing I could paint like so and so. I have to remind myself that while they've been painting for years it's fairly new and I'll find my style the more I practice.

For as long as you have made videos on youtube i have said " be you ". opinions everyone has one and never compare your own art work to someone elses. Put it out there for sale and someone will buy it. that is what matters. As for showing everything you make you dont have to right away leave it for a year and than show it like " this is how i was a year ago". Art is up to you not others and never should be. Be You

Hey Ashleigh, like where you are going with your creative process. You are getting much better at judging/choosing the value ranges (on the initial layers). The mid-tones in the woman's face were beautiful. Previously you had the tendency to lay in the dark tones too soon which numbs the ability to render the subtle mid-tones (where masterful painting resides). If you continually stand up and view the work from a far, you can better see if the value range is actually working. During the lay-in, it is good process to do this every 5 minutes. Painting large pieces makes it even harder to see the proper contrast, so taking pics and viewing it from at least 3-4 times the diagonal aspect is ideal. Painting culture has oversimplified the lay-in process as many teachers tell you to put in the darkest darks first and then build up the lights from there. If the intention is to create beauty then this is not the way to paint as the result tends to be too graphic looking(digital comics). The best painters(Sargent & Sorolla etc) begin with the largest mid-tones and slowly build up to the lightest lights and darkest darks (simultaneously). After they are done all of the tonal shifts, then and only then will they add accents, small details, and highlights. This is the most difficult way to oil paint as it requires the most delicate shifts in tonality and delaying the gratification of putting in accents/details. The face you did at the start of this video is a step toward this process. Great exercise for developing the ability to paint accurate mid-tone shapes: do a few larger pieces on paper and use a large flat brush to lay in the tones like a quilt blanket. Don't do any blending until you have laid in a tone for every part of the painting. This will level you up in both seeing colour shapes, and also paint mixing skill. Once again, great to see your process maturing Ashleigh:)

My main issue is that I got like 600 + followers they are mostly active in my IG story than posts. Then they come to me either in my DMs or something and tell me I don't post a lot... but I am... I always get like 10 likes and 3 of them are me on my other accounts and I mostly see 5 followers like my posts the others are non-followers. Sometimes I'm tired of the " wow your art is so good" and then they walk away, never to be seen again and it repeats over and over again. I'm beginning to think " No it's not...good" I just smile and say thank you. I do appreciate it but my views, likes, shares, comments, and followers. It's really sad and embarrassing for me. I would say this "when I get to 1000, I'll do this and that and this..." I did this many times and it was just stupid of me to think I'll ever reach that and I continue to embarrass myself while I feel people laughing at me. I don't want to think these things and always keep positive and I see improvement every day in my arts. But not in the engagement even tho I update daily on all my social media. I have to run a business now at an art market, so it's just a hard life and the worse part is that I'm doing all these things alone, no art friends, and no one to share my work. For me, the Art Community is lonely. I've tried too many times for years reaching out to Artists and none of them, would give me a second. Especially when I've helped most of them grow, and those I helped don't talk to me anymore and they got 1000 + followers and keep growing while I struggle and they don't even bother to help me out. I have to ask which is so low...so I never ask and keep going on with life. Idk what I should say or do anymore. I'm gad I did help them grow and I'm not complaining about it. I just post now and move on. I don't even see value in my art anymore but sometimes I do like to smile while I draw and I miss that so much... the only time I see the value of my work is when someone wants to buy it. That's my main goal, to share my art around the world by selling it. 😊

Nevertheless, some artists are so rude they don't even bother about their followers. They don't deserve being on social media.

Social media hurts a girl, who every time she posts something.. and when she puts her phone down, she knows that isn’t her true self. And it torments her so badly she steps in front of a train.

Girl, if social media hurt your art you won't be able to sell it. Painting is a very expensive hobby. Painting is like learning to speak another language. If you can't start to paint from different perspectives and angles, for example painting the shoelace first and ending with the eyes, you're not a true artist yet. Just like a foreign student starting to learn English, they interpret from their native words to English in their head before speaking it out loud. Once they start speaking English in their head it would only be then that they truly master the art of the language.
