Great job rock climbing! I agree, artists need a hobby outside of art especially if they are inside all day 😂 A few years ago I decided to get into weight lifting and taking long walks to get some sun and confidence. I love the colors in your painting btw!

Haha thank you! I went again the other day and I think I’ve improved a little 😅 those are great hobbies! I love ones that get me active, since art require a lot of sitting still. 😊

@@AshleighKing Awesome! Rock climbing looks so fun! Yes, having an active hobby as an artist is essential I think. I've been so afraid of having a bad back from hours of work but deadlifts fixed that 💪

I agree with all the above, also how we underestimate the importance of self care! I fit in self care before I do work, that way I know that part is done and i can go deep into that rabbit hole of work. I'm not a professional artist (yet), but this is a practice that I believe will help sustain my future practices in the long run.

I'm a book editor. Your tips about maintaining fun hobbies resonates with me! I've been on the verge of burnout a few times because I forgot that doing my passion is still "working." I appreciate these reminders, and I really loved the fairy and the background music!

We're glad you shared your thoughts about the transition from self-directed artist painting only for oneself to a professional constantly dealing with the expectations and opinions of others. We've met professionals who say they thrive on that pressure, and others who say they don't feel free to make the art they want. Glad you figured out oil ground!

Hi Ashleigh, your creative and personal journey videos are one of the few that are inspirational to many artists. Social media is saturated now with "quick art" or "Studio Ghibli-ish" , clean studio type of clips, then I wonder "Is that type of art salable?" Keep learning, reading ... True art is like nature, ever-growing and changing. It is work, it is from our souls. And as you move along with your abilities, you will find that it will take you where you need to be. ☺

Wow this is such a beautiful and informative video 💕☺️ I hope someday I could also earn a living out of my art. I just loooove to draw and paint. I wish I could do them every single day. But I also know that having an art career would take away much of the time out of that to be able to run a business or market yourself. So until that day comes, I will try my best to enjoy doing what I love, creating things that speak to my soul and focusing on improving my skills. 🙏🏼 More power to you Ashleigh! Keep going! You are an inspiration to all of us! 🫶❤️

I really enjoyed watching your fairy painting process and yes I agree other hobbies really are necessary to keep us connected outside our art. I walk a lot with our dog , as I live very close to lots of beaches here on the East Coast of Australia my inspiration comes from that and my relaxation too. If I were to paint a fairy I would definately paint some flowers around her in the background or perhaps a forest. Thank You for your honesty and sharing your thoughts with us.

As a (recreational) rock climber dabbling in art, it's cool to see an artist dabbling in rock climbing. Be careful though, it can become addicting. Also, I love the color choices in the painting!

2:22 🫂 thankyou. thank you so much. I really, really needed to hear this. right now I’m in an environment where creativity and utilising your artistry is not a common practice and is not even seen in my peers, so I feel like I need to be shaped into the mould of being highly academic. although I’m not failing, or just being a little too close to getting that ‘bad mark’, I always drift towards being a more creative person. always. I wish that one day I, and anyone who can relate to me, can use our creativity as a full time career- that is, we wake up everyday to get the chance to cherish something that we formed for ourselves. thank you Ashleigh for that gentle reminder, a simple message that I’m sure many of us needed to hear 🫶🏼

I enjoy your contemplative and honest outlook to various subject matters, including this one. I never knew I would pick up art one day as a serious hobby. Beyond a personal hobby, art has allowed me to connect with the community and serve others who are seeking to take their first steps into it as well. Who knows... some career artists may emerge from those whom we have journeyed as hobbyists 😅

@@AshleighKing well, in the past I worked with oil and acrylic paint, so it's very different. I absolutely am enjoying it but at times it's frustrating as I'm learning how much water to work with and how to control the water. Very different from working on a canvas but I just ordered canvases for watercolors and I can't wait to give that a try :)

I love seeing that I'm not the only one who at least occasionally needs pliers to open my paint tubes 😂 On marketing yourself, I appreciate you mentioning its importance and the fact that most young artists don't really consider the necessity of it. I feel like most of us are fed the fantasy of being so good at what we do that we end up recognized as a result. Honestly, I wish it were required for art schools to teach students about self-marketing. The closest I had was an art business course which discussed the gallery world, valuation, and the history of the art market. Nothing on marketing oneself though. I feel like putting so much work into improving one's craft only to later figure out that you're not getting anywhere because you weren't putting nearly enough effort into marketing yourself can cause such long-term burnout. Also, please do try out working large-scale, Ashleigh! I used to stick to small panels because I felt it made my paintings more delicate, but I opened up a world of freedom and detail the day I tried something huge!

Relatable 💁‍♂ After spending nearly 20 years in IT, it feels a little painful to spend time on the computer after work. 🙈 As for the fairy, how about changing the stance to be engaging, kind of flowing movement, with gentle graceful energy, holding a paint brush with the back turned to the viewer, twisting her upper body a little so she can look into the eyes of the viewer, with a gaze of surprise? From there we'd find her painting a leaf. The scenery could be a waterfall on the right surrounded by foliage and a few branches, rocks and beams of sunlight breaking through the foliage. Or your fairy could stay exactly as she is and place her in her room decorated with giant flowers and a bed made of a matchbox carton and a sewing pin for a sword. Or a fire fairy. With the meanest look on her face standing heroically on a slab floating on magma, heading out through a black cave opening. Yeh, what ever it's going to be, it'll be cool! 😉

Crossing the line, entering into art career... Hobby-career balance out. 😅I thought you are a full time artist. Art career is a big jump from art hobby. I'm still at the hobby level. Maybe I don't have much confidence to go into an art career. I try Print on demand T shirts, but I am still trying to make my first sales... No sales. I'm still a long way art as a job.

I got pretty lucky with my first video doing so well! I put a lot of research into how to film and edit videos beforehand to make sure the quality was good. I make my income from KZbin and selling art prints and original paintings online! I saved up money from my full time job before taking the leap to try this career. Hope this helps!
