My biggest turn off from social media was the constant feeling of "I'm being sold something". I used to get on social media to check on friends or family, make new friends, and talk about my interests. Now, not olny do I feel constantly sold to, but even if I comment in an Instagram reel "hey, cool sneakers"; the algorithim attacks me with sneaker adds on every other platform.

I'm 47. I'm so glad social media didn't exist when I was a kid, or even a very young adult. I remember during my last semester at university, an English instructor wanted us to submit our essay through email. My mind was so blown! How? What? I was freaking out! I had no idea how to do that! She gave us step by step instructions. LOL and I probably still had to ask someone for help in the computer lab! 😂

I'm a similar age and had a similar experience while studying at Tech. Our computer lab had like three PCs that could access the Interest at the time and we had to take a basic computing course to learn how to send an email. During the class, everyone was like a kid on Christmas morning when a practice email from someone sitting next to them arrived in their inbox.

I am also 47 and had a similar experience. I went abroad my junior of college. They told us the best way to stay in touch with people back home was email. I was like “um, not only do I not know how to use it, I can guarantee me parents don’t either.” So I called from a landline and hoped they’d answer. I like that I grew up when I did.

This video is everything I’ve been feeling for months. I started watching KZbin about a year ago and was immediately sucked into several popular fashion/beauty influencers in the luxury space. Which, coincidentally, is how I found you. While I truly envied the lives of these women, I spent a small fortune buying ALL OF THE THINGS I thought I needed to be like them. Thousands of dollars later, I had a bunch of stuff, but I’d never been more depressed in my life. I’ll circle back to when I started watching your commentary videos my algorithm started to change and I was getting many similar content creators and podcasters who focus on commentary on many different issues. I started noticing every video from my most envious creator had an ad in it and the affiliate links were 12” long and it hit me, I was a fool. I tried to continue watching as I had formed a weird parasocial relationship with these women, but every video just made my head clearer and clearer. I was bankrolling their extravagant lifestyles that I craved so much to have. So that’s the long backstory, but to truly answer your question about why I despise “influencers” was a video posted by a women who had everything I thought I needed titled “my 96 luxury handbag collection”. That was it for me. I’m in a bad mental state and have been for most of the year and I had no idea how these influencers made me feel so inadequate and bad about myself because I didn’t have it all. It’s all commentary videos from here on out and I do have to thank you because your overspending story truly inspired me to change and try do better. Sorry that was so long, but the video you created validated my feelings that I was just part of a scam. Love your videos and how gracefully you approach these topics.

Wow! I’m so glad this video resonated with you. It’s so empowering to break free from that cycle and find more authentic content creators you connect with Thankyou 🥹🫶🏻

Look after yourself, those “influencers” are often “gifted” things by brands to show off & influence others to buy. They didn’t all put their hands in their pockets to purchase stuff. Be yourself, you’re an individual & unique. Buying items doesn’t make you happy, it just gives you more “stuff” to try & find a home for. More is Less, I’ve recently decluttered my wardrobe, 104+ items of clothing & handbags went to charity & I bought 4 replacement items. It was a freeing experience & glad I did it. Don’t worry I have a few handbags & that’s enough, how many bags does one person need. You do you boo, be the best version of yourself. We all have those ermmm days, pick yourself up dust yourself off tomorrow is another day. Take care 💐

Gen X here too. Childhood and teenage years with no internet. I watched all stages, since the internet became widely available. I was working in this industry in 1995 and felt so excited and hopeful about the possibilities - particularly education wise. Fast forward to now and it feels NOTHING like it used to. And I’m not quite sure if what we see today says something about human nature and the types of behaviors we would see no matter how technology evolved, or if the specific ways technology and social media have evolved have shaped people’s behavior. I suspect it’s bothered, simultaneously. And it’s a shame, because it could have gone in so many other better directions - theoretically. All I know is, I find myself feeling quite nostalgic about the dynamics pre social media. I’m fine with people making money online- people would have had to be making money somehow, it just happens that the internet has made options more accessible to people. What bothers me is 1) the manipulative ways many people choose to do so and 2) that making money has pretty much become the only motivation for people to share something, leaving very little room for truly educational and authentic content. And I don’t think AI is going to do any of this any better. The bandwagon people seem most excited about seems to be “ways to make money using AI without having to put in barely any work, or critical thinking, or true creative expression”. Delegating to AI some of the fundamentals of what makes us human isn’t exactly setting the stage for an improved scenario - online or offline.

I was born in 1992 just turned 33, and I feel really blessed that I got to experience an actual childhood playing outdoors and whatnot. Of course we had a computer in our house, but it was one of those big bulky manila colored ones with a huge monitor and it had dial up internet connection. (I think that taught me to be a little bit more patient.) getting to experience a brief time of my life as a child before anything online became social other than AOL chat. Damn… I wish I would’ve realized how good I had it. 😍😍😍

I hate social media, every time I go on it, I feel bad after a few minutes and I really get down. I think it would be psychologically easier for everyone if social media just disappeared. It's really bad, we compare ourselves to others both in appearance and achievements. When someone younger than you achieves more than you will ever achieve, you start to analyze yourself a lot and judge yourself for not achieving the same or better. It's a terrible feeling and I'm sure many of you have felt it or still feel it.

Today, he'd be some finance douche selling me a guru snakeoil course. Ugh!

Appreciate the walk through of how we got to where we are. While there are creative, educational content creators, the dominance of revenue-at-all-costs mentality for most is creating problems at a societal level that are quite literally resulting in the rise of authoritarianism in the US and elsewhere. Where we go from here is either total dystopia or a wake up that makes us better. I plan to do everything I can to help get us to a better, more equal society with a functioning government.

The amount of people that breakup relationships/friendships/and family dynamics but spread it all over social media is weird. I feel like half the time the miss the person but whatever Tik Tok mental health trend is going around they’ll just use that: my ex boyfriend is narcissistic or my mother is gaslighting. It’s to the point where people are extremely isolated and that can’t be healthy; but no one will take accountability in these situations; they just post it all over social media

I agree with basically everything you said in this video… except “having the time” to do things enjoyable. I think many people have time to engage in activities that are good and enjoyable, but it’s wasted on social media! I’ve recently started reading (a big hobby of mine when I was a child), and I’ve realized I have more time than I thought I did for activities outside of work, chores, daily duties, etc. If something is important to someone, they will make the time for it!

It's a unique look into fashion & lifestyle influencers and their journey; it's interesting to reflect on a lot of similarities but also major differences in the communities that I was a part of during the time you're reflecting on in the early 2000/2010s (my communities were mostly video gaming, tabletop gaming, "internet" pop culture, etc). We had our own unique platforms (BBS based forums, reddit, developer websites, etc which different from the "lookbook" type ones you mentioned) but of course there was always the the overlap on major ones like Tumblr, KZbin, etc.

It’s definitely the advertisements and the inflation that ruined social media. It was always bad but now every video or short I watch feels like I’m watching a commercial. I had a blogspot in 2003 and very high tech it was linked to a personal yahoo group. I was backpacking in South America so it was so everyone knew what I was doing. I didn’t have a mobile. I had to use a physical guide book and bookings online, if a thing was by email mostly by telephone. I’m glad all the social media wasn’t a thing. I even had an analogue camera and got my photos copied to a disk so I could upload them and send the physical photos home. I think there will be a big pull back of social media as the damage to kids mental health is now known & it’s also messing up the adults. Great video❤

7:32 I feel like MySpace was not only a place where you could show off who you were as an individual, but everyone on the platform was also so authentic. It would be super embarrassing to pretend to be someone you weren’t on MySpace. It would literally ruin your reputation and social life. People wouldn’t associate with you because it was so embarrassing to be considered a poser of any kind. I miss that so much! You knew that almost everyone you interacted with was like that in real life and could tell by how many friends they had on there. Low friend count meant you weren’t your true self. None of us would be caught dead faking our lives on there. I miss the freedom it brought to be unapologetically yourself. Man, those were good times. You actually hung out with the people on your friends list. You could always find cool new bands, local concerts and stuff. It was awesome!!!

Your little baby emo picture was meeee! The acceptable hair color was my own, and I was allowed very subtle highlights to make it “less mousy” but I wanted to be edgy so bad
@CaitlinPawlowski6 күн бұрын
Hehe same I was never edgy but tried so damn hard with the little changes my mum let me make 😂

The first thing I thought of when I saw this video was “share the luv bebo”, it was so good. How was it not popular in the USA 😮

My mom wouldn't let me cut or dye my hair, so our hairstyles were very similar and I rocked tiny bows every single day from grade 8/age 14 til I graduated at age 18 😂 P.s. I still listen to all those bands. It was never a phase, mom. xD

Hehe 😝 it was never a phase Looking back I’m kind of glad my mum didn’t let me fry mg hair with hair dye and excessive straightening

I remeber working at the student union and it was fun organizing events because you would post them and your friends would automatically come to join. Then in 2016 it changed and we found out about the algorithm. It became much harder to engage people into events.

I was born in 1990. I remember as a kid playing outside until the lights turned on. LOL Of course Internet and being online was a thing, but it was less relevant than it is now. I was never a fashionista or interested in fashion blogs, but I do remember being obsessed with Xanga, Gaiaonline, Neopets, Tumblr and Myspace. :P Back then people were just sharing and connecting. Of course then Facebook and Instagram followed, but I feel like the good 'ole days are really just that...the good 'ole days. Everything now is trying to sell you something, become a brand, or what I've noticed is a rise in people that just want attention or validation on the internet. Social media is a tool and has many great benefits... but I feel like it's just gone downhill rapidly in the past decade. At this point I'm just along for the ride. LOL

I feel like the app "like to know" is the fashion social media space. No voting on outfits but I believe you can post your outfit reels on there and then they link to where they got the outfits from. Seems to work alongside Instagram well more so than as a stand alone platform.

It’s the brand sponsorships. They are always promoting something I have no interest in.

Bebo was pretty popular in the UK for a short while from what i remember
@paularunslondon6 күн бұрын
It was! I loved it. I remember using it when I was at my first full time job, so maybe 2006ish?
@BexREB6 күн бұрын
@paularunslondon yeah that sounds about right! I was at secondary school around 13 years old at the time I think and remember how many of the popular kids had some black and white posed photo as their profile picture especially ha. It didn't fully take over from MySpace in my school though but then Facebook got popular quickly and bebo kind of died out if I remember rightly.

I miss the late 90’s very early 2000’s when the only thing you took forever to curate for online……..was the BEST and most epic/hilarious/cryptic/etc AWAY MESSAGE for AOL messenger and MySpace. 🤣😝 we used to sit there, reading away msgs down our list of AOL besties
