More like mostly. It's nice for people who were already introverted homebodies, but it's turned a lot of the population into something similar. Even when they're out, they're looking at their phones and not the world and people around them. You only have to look at random other human beings for a while to realize how ridiculously exaggerated the online vision of an "attractive" person is.

True! Before it was only models and celebrities who had the resources behind them to edit their pics for mass consumption. Now that ability is in the hands of everyone, and more and more people are using it, warping perceptions of what "normal" people look like.
@TheImaginaryCat
@TheImaginaryCat 3 ай бұрын
There are plenty of things you can do to pictures in the darkroom during development. I think editing photos has been around almost as long as there were cameras and pictures to alter. For example some of those old black and white crazy corset photos are edited/painted in, but it was pretty normal for the photographer to hide little imperfections like akne and the like. It's actually a really interesting topic to look into
@yumeironeko
@yumeironeko 3 ай бұрын
@@TheImaginaryCat Excellent points. The same also applies if you go back to the medium of paint portraiture. Retouching acne in portraits I would argue has a negligible impact compared to altering body proportions, though. I wonder how many average people were getting black and white prints made showing off exaggerated body proportions. Gravure models are one thing, but would an average lady specify to her photographer that she wanted her waist nipped in/painted over? Or was that just a common service that they provided? Also, the fact that people's bodies were usually much more covered up by layers of clothing makes it more difficult to compare your body directly to someone else's since you can't see their actual body, just the effect of their corset and/or padding in their silhouette. Nowadays you can see basically everything, so altering body proportions has a much more visceral and immediate impact on the viewer. If the editing is done well, people can't tell that it's not someone's actual proportions (especially in still photography since angles help a lot).
@shelley5449

I mean, if we wanna go back far enough, 'portraits' that we're painted before camera's were 'edited' (painters would be asked to paint their subjects a certain way) when black and white photos were invented they were edited and cinched in at the waist too. For as long as we've had some form of 'selfie' we've had some form of editing. It is crazy, but yeah, it's fully deceptive too. And also beauty standards are always changing so there's no way to win. I think colour correction and anything like that to brighten and such, yeah that's all fine because cameras don't accurately capture colour anyway, but really anything else and we should avoid it. That being said, I do think it's easier said than done when we live in a ✨️society✨️ That being said, some people like to express themselves with colourful make up (me include) and dress and I think that's fine and we shouldn't shame them because it's not 'natural beauty' (because that can soon start getting toxic) but yeah, when it comes to pictures and the digital space, it has real impact when we're all editing and changing our body shapes and all the rest of it.

I love when you make videos like this, so opened and genuine. I love to think that everyone on social media tend to look just slightly different than how they do in person. The editing and how the camera portrays us can be different than how we actually look, and it's kinda crazy. I hate that I learned you can edit your body even in videos, and it's made me self-conscious because so many people on social media have better bodies or physical appearances and I almost never see anyone actually out shopping looking like they do. Editing isn't bad and it can be very cool and look aesthetic but I think we all need to remember that we as humans are suppose to have flaws and our skin has texture and not soft as filters make it out to be, and it's okay to have a different body type.

And that's why I think we should redefine body positivity and take it back to its roots. Aka instead of acting like obesity is healthy and great, it should mean that anyone, no matter if they're average, conventionally attractive, has deformities, whatever, should accept their body and feel comfortable in their skin. Body positivity should lead to you accepting that sometimes you just look a bit like a potato. It should lead to you wanting to make positive changes, like sleep better to combat your eyebags or do some sports, eat better food to get to a healthy weight etc. I think another problem is also though that, even to this day, women are still largely reduced to their looks. As if the most important quality they gotta have still is just "looking pretty".

But obese people cannot change how they look in 5mn and they still need to dress up, go out, use public accomodations in the mean time so we should catter to them too. @@tdelioncourt1268 I mentioned somewhere that - aside from the fact that people just shouldn't say mean things about anyone - the obese person may actually go with their weight down and such remarks are can be seriously undermining their effort... and comments looked as if people genuinely thought that others can shapeshift, not only to look better overnight, but also to annoy others by deliberately choosing to look "unpleasant" or however you want to call it. @@tdelioncourt1268 It's mostly that a loud minority used the term to justify not putting in the work to become healthier. So much so that it affected the general public's knowledge of the term and many people now just associate it with morbidly obese people using it as an excuse to not make a change for the better. And to unfortunately even drag other obese people down with them by discouraging them to improve their health. I fully agree though that you shouldn't shame people for being obese either! I'm sorry if it came off that way. I think especially obese people that work to make a change and might even be actively losing weight are incredibly strong, because changing your lifestyle drastically for the better is so damn difficult. Anyone who grew up seeing tumblr girls in the 2010s knows how dangerous this is, an0rexia was spiking hard and a lot of people talked about their experiences being hospitalized. I feel sad and worried that these- already pretty skinny people- feel the need to edit their bodies even thinner. I knew so many people including myself who saw these photos and felt insecure because of them, going on to develop EDs EDs destroy your health and can kill you, and I worry this will just prolong the current beauty trend we’re going downhill on. So many people are fooled by ai-art now, it’s only a matter of time before filters get so good they can roto their subjects and liquify bodies without distorting the background. With the rising desire of surgeries we may start thinking that natural bodies are unnatural and unattractive even though this trend was exacerbated by digital alteration Remember y’all, you do not exist to be attractive. Your looks do not determine your worth. Your body is built to live out your desires and nothing more. You can exist without purpose. And most of all you are loved more than you know ❤

Gonna add this bit of info I found a couple years ago doing research on social media and mental health. TikTok had a virality filter that pushed certain content depending on specific characteristics, and if someone has these, they get boosted. So, yeah, TikTok did some shitty stuff to promote body image issues with the way they even programmed their platform. This is one of the reasons I was fine with the idea of it being banned - it literally chose genetics over talent and originality. (NOTE: I don't know if this is still a thing or not - regardless it's disturbing.)

I am currently ashamed of my body... postpartum... planning to get fit when I can. But yeah, these images look pretty unrealistic, it's sad that people want to look like that. If people want to go back to the 1800's clothing style of looking like tiny waist, that would be healthier because you can fake it with clothing. But at that time, apparently ads women were really edited to have a tiny waistline

As a guy I'll give my two cents for what it's worth. Girls have it tougher because looks are so emphasized for them. But as long as you are healthy and not let yourself get disheveled, you're perfect. And you'll eventually find someone who will like you just exactly as you are. Even to this day when I look at the mirror I think to myself wtf is wrong with my girlfriend for liking THIS. But hey I'm glad she does, crazy as she is for it. Edit: Personality is so much more important as well, and you learn this as you grow older more and more. It's important you have similar goals, dreams and share similar morals. Because no matter how the other person looks good to you if at the end of the day you're constantly bickering with each other you won't last.

Thank you for this video Aki! Also I know you said you’re not fishing for compliments but I genuinely find you very attractive! We have similar body types and while I see you and think you’re beautiful I myself have been struggling with self acceptance. I’ve gained weight as I’ve gotten older but I reached a point where I accepted my body for what it is. It takes a lot of work to untrain those negative thoughts. And seeing someone like you helps me appreciate my own body more. Being on social media and seeing all of this stuff can put you in that mindset that you aren’t beautiful enough if you don’t look a certain way. And you MUST be beautiful! This mindset can get really dangerous. I’ve always tried to avoid those parts of social media. It’s not good for anyone’s mental health. Btw because I feel like I need to say this or else someone will misconstrue, just because I am more accepting of my body doesn’t mean I am not doing anything about it. It just means that I am not so hard on myself anymore. You can accept things as a they are and still put in work to make things for the better for yourself.

Aki I love that you're revisiting that "beautify me/edit me" topic you did in the past, but trying a different angle. it is totally a relevant topic, certainly to our generation too where we grew up through the tech development and transfomation of social norms. I went through several phases of subtle body dysmorphia. I didnt credit it to online / social media when I was in highschool but now that I am almost 30 and I've looked back and now see how some of it infiltrates into one's consciousness. EDIT: I think the important thing is for us to be self-aware about what we are seeing and know that it's a lot of fake shit AND/OR BEAUTY TREATMENTS (fillers, botox, surgery etc). Don't need to hate or be bitter as it's just a waste of emotional energy.

as much as I've always been an advocate for letting people do whatever they want and whatever makes them feel good as long as it hurts no one, this stuff just isn't acceptable because it DOES hurt people and it also looks completely ridiculous. women online are demeaning themselves by falling into these standards and it's sad to see because I know it often comes from body dysmorphia created by society's horrible standards and the way that men want women to basically look like s*x dolls at all times, and then it in turn influences more women to view themselves poorly and feed into this cycle of self hatred and self objectification

The worst thing is that this development in society makes both women and men unhappy. Women because they can't realistically achieve those looks, and men because they just never meet a woman who looks like this in real life. It's an expectation that can't be fulfilled for anybody. Luckily it only really affects people who are terminally online... but sadly that's just a lot of young people.
