My grandfather was born in the same year as Mrs. Garcia. He, too, fought in WW2 and never talked about it much. He was Black American, and the small stories he told was heartbreaking. Black soldiers were not treated very well in the military. Then he fought in Japan only to return to the segregated. He didn’t get voting rights until well in his 50s. Think about that! And for those who say the Confederate flag is part of their heritage. It’s part of mine too in many ways. My grandfather, along with surviving Black veterans, would March at the state capital on MLK day to remove the that flag from the capital building. All those old men died never seeing that flag removed. I lived to see it, though. My grandfather is my hero. He loved everyone regardless if they loved him back.

That's a sad injustice too. We need to have our history books reflect the history in fact. I see it mainly acknowledges white heroes of the war. But skips over the sacrifices of soldiers of many ethnic groups. This is why I study history for more than what the school books are telling us.

There is an Audible series called The Home Front, and it goes into some of the history of BIPOC soldiers and civilians during WWII. They also discuss some of the women’s regiments, but not about this particular topic. I’m glad that CBS This Morning decided to run this important story.

@@Nurse-Laura there's a podcast that my son listens to about history of our country and it's things we're not even aware of. Now that the podcast is telling it the government has confirmed that it's true. Like the air balloons with bombs the Japanese were sending across the ocean. Many made landfall and they're still finding what's left of them in places in the midwest.

That’s why there’s called the greatest generation. No bragging or complaining. Just doing their JOB! Thank you for your service. Your story, as well as your teammates should be written in the history books so that all children, not just the grandchildren can learn of the deeds of so many ignored and belittled service men and women. A movie based on the story of Mrs GRcia and her fellow “Medcs” as well as those who joined just joined to serve their nation. Whether sorting mail or care for the wounded, they volunteered to help and serve. Thanks for this beautiful story. At 102 years of age, grandma is still a bright and alert star. Salud!

We need more stories like this one. This lovely woman is just one year younger than my own beloved grandmother, born in 1919, before women finally were granted the right to vote. @@yurei8 I wish people today had the patriotism of the WWII generation. They fought fascists and loved their country, even when it did not always love them back. We could learn a lot from people like your mother. They were willing to sacrifice all for the common good. Many people today won't even wear a mask to save their elderly and sick family members! My entire family has Covid right now because the family of the paralyzed man my daughter cares for would not mask or take precautions. And this is the second time this bunch almost killed their dad with Covid this year!

We need more than a thank you, have you seen the high rate of homeless veterans? Why should a veteran need a co-signer to get a VA loan? A Bunch of rubbish.

See how she was critical of America but also said she’s proud to be an American. It’s a shame she was segregated and yet she’s proud. She’s a spitfire and beautiful.

My mom Alberta Viola Manson Allen was also trained as a mail sorter for World War two. She has pass away at the age of 79 years old, now as of 2004. But I would love to know more of my moms military past?

Grandma is strong and looks the same when she was young, like a film star. I feel bad she didn't get praised before, she had to wait so long

As a veteran, there are a lot of stories that go untold. We do our service and don’t talk about it much with our children and grandchildren. Sadly, these stories disappear like dust in the wind.
