I’m starting my job tomorrow (fresh out of uni 😳) and watching this video gave me so much comfort. I don’t know what to expect it’s my first “big girl social worker” job which is frightening and so exciting at the same time. Keep posting videos I love your content so much. 🤍

I can’t believe I’m seeing this comment 3 weeks late but I hope the first 3 weeks of your job have been a manageable transition 💗💗 Post-grad is such a weird time but I’m glad to hear you’re having grace with yourself. You’ve got this.

Hi Anna! I really enjoyed watching this video and hearing all of your answers to the questions. I currently attend a two year community college and I am in my second year and graduate in December. I major in Social Work and have plans on attending a four year college to get a bachelor’s degree. I have decided to work with children and families and not sure one hundred percent what setting I want to work in; I am stuck between working in a hospital or working in a school. I am currently completing an internship at a boys and girls club, an organization that serves school-aged children, so I know for sure that I want to work with kids. I have thought about working at a children’s hospital, so hearing about your experience and duties as a medical social worker is pretty interesting. I love how you talked about having confidence when working with clients and how making mistakes doesn’t make you a bad social worker. This is something that I think about very often, so hearing about that helped. I also loved how you discussed a little bit about the psychology theories and the “real world application.” After learning about the different theories, I began applying them to personal situations with family members and inserting psychology into them. I thought I was a little crazy about doing that, but after hearing you discuss “real world applications,” it made me feel much better. 😂 I don’t usually comment, but I just wanted to share my current journey of becoming a social worker and how much I love it so far! Thank you for this video! 😁🫶🏾

Woo Hoo!! 🙌🏼Thank you for answering my question about taking notes in grad school! Your words were truly reassuring and appreciated. I was beginning to think I wasn't cut out for this field because I had a hard time remembering everything and keeping up with the readings 😵‍💫. I'm in my second to last semester of my MSW and your channel has been a lighthouse through this chaos lol. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and being so generous with your knowledge!!

Hi Anna, thank you so much for telling your story! Can you tell me why you decided to stop working in a jail? Is it scary to work in a jail? Does the jail provide good protection for workers?

Also, what were the pros and cons when you worked at the jail? I’m worried that the poor treatment of inmates, lack of resources for the mentally sick etc..will deflate me in terms of not being able to help them appropriately. Thank you for your help!!

In the facility I worked, there would always be security officers around so I never felt that I was put in dangerous situations by myself. I don't know if that is true everywhere, but you're right that it is definitely something important to check in about before working somewhere! The pros for me were the teenagers I worked with and getting to work with them. The cons were definitely the systemic issues that I got to see so up close and personally. Not going to lie, that part was definitely hard and that was a huge part in why I ended up not staying at this job. I don't think it is impossible to work within the incarceration system and am a huge believer in being in the midst of bad systems in order to help make change in bad systems -- but for me there weren't enough protective factors to keep me there (i.e. not a lot of professional support, toxic work environment, petty supervisors, etc). Some of my old coworkers have worked in the same place I was for years though and have been able to make it work and continue doing the work! So I think it depends so much on each individual

If you haven’t, can you do a what’s in my bag for work? Currently started my career in medical social work and I’m trying to figure out what to bring.

This is a great video idea! I’ll try to incorporate it in soon but so you don’t have to wait: Honestly, I don’t bring TOO much in my bag. Mostly food for the day, my water cup, and my book for my lunch break. I always keep clothing layers on hand but those usually stay at my office. My badge lives in my bag so I never forget it 🤣 and then the basics like wallet, deodorant, tampons, chapstick, etc. There’s not too much I use in a day outside of regular office supplies!
