It's so easy for us to sit here in our warm homes, soft beds, food and drink within easy reach and say "No don't eat it" or "I would never eat it". I've never in my life known true hunger let alone actual starvation so I have no idea what I may or may not actually do to stay alive. None of us can know for sure until we are in that situation.

I just finished Eduardo Strauch's book, "into the Silence: After the Crash" and I have to say I have a newfound respect and love for these men. I'm just starting Nando Parrados, and I have already read Roberto Canessa's and Coche Inciarte's. The different prisms each man experienced is fascinating, and heartbreaking. Coche could only think of his mother who he believed was missing him dearly. Just the year before the crash, Coche had lost his dad to Cancer. All he could think of was getting home to his mother so she wouldn't have to lose him. Eduardo was very spiritual and I have to say out of all of them so far, his book was gutting. After I am done Nando's, I have the book this film was taken from, Pablo Vierci's "Society of the Snow." I'm going to be getting the book "To Play the Game" by John Guiver. His approach is to focus on the dead while Vierci's is the 16 who survived.

I encourage you to look up the affects of starvation. These boys weren't hungry, they were starving. On top of the calories they were burning being cold they also had to do physical labor looking through the wreckage and caring for the sick. They were on the brink of death by day 8. I couldn't judge them at all for their choice to eat the bodies to stay alive.

Nando broke his head in the accident, in fact, he noticed the pieces of skull loose under the skin. Miraculously, they declared him dying and he was left near the hole, where it was coldest and that reduced the inflammation and saved his life. His black eyes were caused by the blood that spilled into his head. He lost his mother, then his sister, survived the avalanche, walked ten days through the Andes without climbing equipment, eating frozen human flesh to save his friends and almost died on the helicopter rescue trip due to bad weather conditions. A true hero.

alot of ppl judge how quickly they caved on the idea of eating the bodies but only because theyre privileged enough to never feel true hunger, two days with nothing in your body is a lot different than barely eating for two days. plus the bodies were the only option at that point, its not a forest surrounded by plants its snow & dead bodies sadly.

There was never EVER a thought in their minds of doing anything to Liliana. She became an angel, or sorts to them. She nursed their wounds and was their "mother in the mountain." They all respected Liliana, even making sure she had someplace more private in order to do her business. I would have expect some amount of maturity from people some 52 years later after the actual event, and to at least have some amount of respect for these boys. They were all good Catholic boys who belonged to good homes with loving families. They were not depraved morons who would judge others. One thing you have to understand about these boys. None of them did anything individually. All of it was done as a SOCIETY, a SOCIETY OF THE SNOW. Each of them played a part in their rescue. Yes, Nando and Roberto made that 10 day walk to civilization, but the support and trust the other 14 had in them cannot be ignored. The ones who died gave their support in offering their bodies for sustenance. Without all of them, none of them would have survived.

Eating snow is not a good idea. I already knew a little about this but according to some quick google research, snow makes you more dehydrated because your body uses too much energy to melt the snow, not to mention it takes away more body heat which is more important than thirst. So if you ever get stranded somewhere snowy, eating snow is not a good idea. It just makes you more dehydrated. They're also in the mountains during winter. There are no animals, no bugs, no good sources of water. And even tho you can technically survive 3 weeks without food, you'll go insane before then. Im not surprised cannibalism was brought up pretty early. Plus, everyone can say they'd never do that but I guess you'd never know until your actual survival instincts kick in when put in that situation. Either way, such a sad and terrible story but I hear its a very good depiction of what actually happened in real life Edit: Also not sure if its okay to melt snow and then drink it? Maybe boil it like you would dirty water or whatever. If anyone knows whether thats okay please let me know. I've been wondering forever lol
@lunacouer
@lunacouer Күн бұрын
It's ok to melt snow to drink! Where they were, the snow's about as pure as it gets (especially compared to today), so any untouched top snow would've been perfect. Like you said, you'd burn more energy melting the snow internally than if you'd tried melting it before drinking it. However, it seems that it takes awhile for dehydration from that to overtake you. Like you said, the hypothermia would be the immediate threat. Eating a handful of fresh snow like they initially did isn't necessarily harmful - it's just that it's not sustainable long-term. Best to get it melted first (preferably slightly warm). I agree with so much of what you said. People can't know what they'd do unless they were in that situation, _especially_ not from the comfort of a warm home with a stocked pantry. What a lot of us are fortunate enough to not know is exactly how _painful_ acute starvation can be. The way body processes and organs begin to shut down can just plain hurt. Combine that with the mood disturbances that happen early on and yeah, it's gonna get brought up when your body is dying and therefore driving you to consider it.

Yes if there is no other option snow should def be boiled first.. also eating snow can cause burns in your mouth and throat. That’s why Fitto melted the snow with the metal piece and sunlight, since they couldn’t build a fire due to the altitude and fear of the plane kerosene been spread everywhere.

No convencieron a Numa de que comiera para no sentirse mal ellos, sino para que sobreviviera él. No hicieron nada malo.

Numa’s passing did spark the confidence trip. The survivors have spoken on this and they worked with the director and the actors for this film. Some of them even made cameos as did also the relatives of people that didn’t make it back, such as Numa’s nephew outside of their real home in the beginning of the film. This is an actual tribute to all people of this tragedy.

girl?? have you ever spent a week in the cold, injured, surrounded by dead people and with no prospect of being rescued? It's very easy to talk on a full stomach. You speak as if going a week without eating is easy. I believe there are moments when we need to think a little and put ourselves in someone else's shoes. No one wanted to eat human flesh for pleasure; they were starving. If you wouldn't have the will to survive, that's fine, but you can't project your lack of will onto others. They wanted to live and did what was necessary for that. And you don't have to like it; you didn't go through what they did. Also, It is shown in the movie that they ate everything to try to survive, even things that are not edible. And you still talk as if that was their first choice? And I didn't understand why you guys told the others so much to stop insisting on Numa eating as if he wouldn't literally die of hunger if he didn't eat. They didn't force him to do anything, they just tried to make him survive.

Since Nando was such a prominent person, his story and the way he was actually able to survive is insane. Essentially, they thought he was dead or past the point of saving and kept him out in the cold no water etc.. and because of that the swelling in his brain( I believe) didnt get bad enough to kill him, and so that’s why he went from those sunken eyes to a lot better. He’s done some interviews about it, they’re a quick read if anyone wants to check it out!

It's easy to say that you wouldn't eat the bodies when you're not in a critical situation like this, almost freezing to death and almost starving to death, feeling an unbearable pain in your stomach. You guys didn't understand that to survive it was this or nothing, it's not like they had much of a choice.

Hi there, this is the fisrt time I watch your reactions. I am writing from Argentina. I am glad you two have reacted to this movie. A fun fact: the actual survivors made cameos: Nando is the tall man holding the door for " Nando" and his family at the airport entrance; Carlitos Paez is the man reading the list of survivors ( in 1972 it was his own father who read the list, as it is showed in the movie; Roberto Canessa is the doctor walking behind " Roberto" character entering the hospital. Roberto got his degree as children cardiologist and he has saved many children's lives since then. And there are some others. One thing about your reactions: it is a little bit annoying to hear the lady talking that much. Thank you.

some of the survivors are interviewed in the background documentary even though the movie mentions it the strauch cousins as the eldest (after captain marcelo's death) especially held the group together as the leaders and divided the chores and were the ones who gave the expeditionaries the ability to do what they did by giving them the best food, warmest places to sleep, etc. nando wasn't actually leader as much as he was very insistent of escaping to get to his father and older sister his only family left about the cannibalism, numa and some of the others like lilliana and coche not only didn't want to eat, but weren't physically able to and would throw up cause the mental block was so strong, for those people they tried cooking the meat even though it was difficult cause of the wind/cold and the fact they didn't have a lot of things to burn, so yeah some ppl even when dying can't do it

29:25 - being very familiar with this story, as soon as I recognised the date on the screen and realised we were coming up to the avalanche I actually paused the movie for the night and continued the next day. I just couldn't bring myself to watch it right then. I totally get the desire for a break there! (And the sound design during that scene, man. A part of me really wishes I could've experienced it in the cinema, another part is glad I could pause it when I needed to.) And about the boy who died calling out for his dad, Vasco, he was badly injured in the crash - his calf muscle was basically almost torn off the bone and they kind of wrapped it in place, but the wound got infected and went gangrenous.
