I show you how to get more wear out of your socks. If you wear holes in the heels of your socks, don't throw them out. They will last longer if you turn them upside down. The top becomes the heel, so you can carry on wearing them.

It is always so good to see Miss Maisie. My aunts and uncles who lived through WWII always said, "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without." (I looked it up and it's from the War Advertising Council....odd name...) It'd be a shame to throw away good socks because of one hole. I've gotta learn how to darn 😏. Clever repair, Ilona. Thank you.

When I can't wear socks any more I put them on my hands to dust my Holy statues and ornaments around the house. They also make a nice wee soft ball for my dog to play with. Pop socks or stockings and tights make great tree ties or plant ties when I need to tie back anything in the garden because they don't cut in to the branches or damage the bark.

I remember when I was a child socks got darned, we had white cotton knickers that had a channel to replace the elastic when it wore out, I remember old cotton vests being used as dish cloths or floor cloths, nothing went to waste, anything and everything that was worn beyond repair ended up in a rag bag for cleaning cloths, that was after all the buttons and zips had been removed and stored in the big button tin.

Buy tube socks all the same color so the heels wear evenly. When the toe wears out, sew a c- shaped line from side to side across the good part of the toe behind the worn part, leaving a seam allowance. Cut the part of the toe that had the hole in it off and sew across the sock edge again using a zig zag or blanket stitch to prevent unravelling and make the edge smooth.

Hi Ilona . The extra thickness of the sock would prevent me from wearing my shoes or my boots, but it must work for lots of people. I’d rather darn my socks the old fashioned way . Plus most of the time I get holes at the toes....😊

You hardly notice it if you fold over the fabric very neatly. It is already worn thin so folding it over doesn't feel bulky. Maybe don't pull your laces so tight. I would not want to feel lumpy bumpy darning under my heel. It would be too uncomfortable.
