I just noticed a little detail: Aaron says, as Prowler, said "I don't ever quit." But the Spider-People all say "You always get back up." The two phrases have nearly the same meaning, but are so vastly different in intent and delivery. It's a great way to contrast Prowler as a foil to Spider-Man.

The music is so good, the theme its self shows how surprised Miles is to know that his uncle is the prowler, the violin shows his sadness and how heartbroken he is, and the drums show the intensity of the situation. And when the plot twist is revealed, nothing happens until we see Miles’ face. Its basically telling us that the plot twist isn’t for the viewers, but its for Miles.

Since the Prowler is a known figure in the comics, a few people already saw the reveal coming. But that didn't make it less impactful, because we saw how much Aaron meant to Miles. And I especially like how he's Miles version of uncle Ben, and that despite being a villain, it's still the tragedy of his death that allowed Miles to become Spider-Man, the hero he was meant to be. I also like how, for a movie that was mostly fun, colorful and energic, everything about the Prowler is played like a horror movie. His appearance, his main theme, the fact that he's almost always seen in the dark... we can feel how much Miles is terrified by this enemy.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who found the Prowler's "siren" so impactful. It was like a T-Rex roar from Jurassic Park. It was distinctive, and changed the tone of the entire scene. When you heard it in the background, you knew it was time to run. Such a simple thing that was so masterfully utilized. The analysis of the costume color and the shift to spider-man's scheme at the beginning of the movie was a detail I completely missed and makes that scene so much better than it already was. Fantastic essay and critique.

I love basically everything about the Prowler, but I think my single favorite aspect is the fact that there was still a single shred of hope for his character. Even after who-knows-how-many villainous acts, even after vowing to never quit, even knowing it would go against everything he's built up and probably ruin him... Aaron still loved Miles enough to throw all of that away, even if just in that one moment. To let his nephew go in that most critical turning point. It would have been easy for him, as a person, to think he's gone too far to do the "right thing" and just break down. But Aaron doesn't; he knows exactly what he should do- what he WANTS to do- and he does it. It's a choice that costs him his life, but it's never too late to try and do the right thing. To be a better person. I think that's a powerful message.

I think he redeemed himself with this act and he would have lived after knowing miles was spider man, he might have even changed his ways.. i mean he sure as heck wasnt going to go against his own nephew, also i thought he would have wanted or even liked miles following his ways so then maybe they would have made a good crime fighting duo

@@jamescomer8701 I won’t argue with most of that(Aaron is one of my favorite characters), but Aaron wasn’t an antihero. Examples of antiheroes are Batman and Deadpool. To be an antihero, you have to still help people yet not display the traditional “heroic” traits such as bravery and the likes. Since Aaron doesn’t actually help the public in some way, he’s still a villain, albeit a sympathetic one on the cusp of redemption

I really like how during the "Leap of Faith" scene, you can see Miles Parkouring on buildings and bouncing around, because that's how the Prowler moved around when chasing miles. I also like how in that scene you see a lot of Purples and Purple-Blues, which transition to Reds and Spider-Man esque Blues, to show his Transition from almost becoming the next Prowler to becoming spider-man. At least that's my Interpretation on it, I don't know if that was the point of it though.

On paper, the sentence "The death of Miles' villainous uncle is what inspires him to reach his potential as a hero" makes no sense or sounds like it'd be lazy writing, but it really is beautifully executed in the movie. What I loved is that how deep Aaron was as a sort of tragic villain. Based solely on his interactions with Miles and how he was willing to let Miles go when he realized he was spider man, we get the sense that he's still got a good person in him. It may not justify or absolve him of any wrong doing he's done off-screen, but like you said, we get the sense that he was just like Miles. Made some mistakes and bad choices, never had the chance to turn his life around and became what he is now. Whereas Miles had his "turning point" by meeting spider man. It gives us some depth to what Miles could have been, but it also gives us sympathy for what Aaron never became . It's very sad because it's so real to life that sometimes our experiences and circumstances shape us, rather than our character.

I feel like it's also worth mentioning that the prowler's motif mimics Miles' motif. Miles has a brassy motif that starts at a note, goes down a note, then come back up. The prowler's motif is essentially the same, but with a more distorted sireny sound. In fact, in the scene where the prowler dies it plays Miles' motif, as if to signal the prowler's turn to good in death and the idea that it is a Morales motif.

Coming from a very causal fan of Spider-man, I think my favourite part of the relationship between Miles and Arran is just how emotional it all was. The fear Miles felt was so real. Miles tripped, he stumbled, he hind in fear and froze in terror. Mile's fear established the Prowler as a serious threat, one that scared me more than any other. On the other side of things there's the tragedy of their relationship. They truly had a bond. Arran encouraged Miles and was truly there for him. Miles looked like his whole world came crashing down the moment the Prowler took off his mask. Once the realisation that his nephew was Spider-Man Arran stopped, he looked *horrified* and all he could do was step back and look at Miles. The two of them never got the closure they both needed and wanted. Despite being the villain the Prowler's death was one of the most gutting.

With all of the points provided in this video, it’s surprising how much foreshadowing there was in Into the Spiderverse for miles becoming the Prowler at the end of Across the Spiderverse. One thing I love about this film is how they frame the twist that Prowler is Aaron to be a big shock for those that don't know, but still hits hard for those that already know the twist from the comics. When the twist is revealed in the apartment, it allows those in the dark to be surprised, but also focuses specifically on Miles' reaction for the ones who know. So instead of thinking "yeah, I know already," they can still feel the impact of the reveal through Miles and how devastating it is for him

4:02 such a foreshadow/prediction of what’s revealed in Across the Spider Verse, amazing. Miles likely becoming the Prowler reminds me of Eon from the Ben 10 series, who is basically a non-omnitrix holding but time warping evil Ben. They also have a purple/green theme but separated.

What's so amazing about these details is that even though we never noticed them, our brains did, and that is what makes the movie so powerful! This is the best super hero movie to date, and it sets a high bar!

I can't decide which is more amazing, Into the Spider-Verse, or this essay. It hit all the points a good video essay should: confident argument, creative editing, soothing coffee-house background jams, and, most importantly, the feeling that there is so much more to learn about what I previously thought was absent from a film. My favorite point, and a certified James DeLisio trademark, is your discussion of motifs. This movie is sonically a masterclass on how to blend the style of filmmaking one uses with the music choices throughout the movie. The Prowler's horn was always something that stuck with me when I watched, and now you made me see why I loved "What's Up Danger?" as much as I do. Great job bro, keep growing and improving, and, like Uncle Aaron said, never quit.
