He pushed boundaries, exposed the darkest parts of himself, and said things that made people uncomfortable, because they were the truth. When he said that men have been the number 1 threat to female existence throughout human history, he wasn't fucking wrong. For this reason, he was both a comic of the people and a comic's comic. Loved by many, and loved by few.

Some one -- my guess is Louis -- probably thought it was a good stand-alone joke, what if a guy tried to do the Fonz juke box trick and it just broke and sliced up his hand. But it does not work so well because he's not playing a younger, cool Fonz-like character, so the reference is too subtle. And, too, you have to be 50 or older to get the reference anyway. I had to watch that bit twice myself to see how he hurt his hand again, and to see he kind of approached it like he was going to tap it and make it play a song the way the Fonz did, before I got the reference. I mean, I could be wrong, but I can't think what else it could be.
