He's right--this works. I've had my Soda Stream hooked up to a 20 lb. (9kg) tank for ages. A tank refill costs about 25 bucks and lasts about a year, sometimes longer. And I drink a lot of seltzer water. Using their small tanks was costing me at least 30 bucks a month or more.

i've loved sparkling water Aka:- soda water since i was a kid, i used to make it in the old wire encased soda bottles my dad had for his bar. it was bloody expensive back then and i only ever had it as a treat, then came sodastream in my late teens around the late 70s and it was like i had died and gone to heaven, i have been drinking gobs of soda water ever since, at least a litre a day on average, a lot more in summer ive always filled the bottles of water and prechilled them to almost 0° to absorb as much gas as possible and to turbocharge them when i get the gas up to blowoff i take the whole setup and shake the shit out of it while charging more gas into it to keep it at maximum pressure, shaking it helps to dissolve more gas into the water quickly. i love it at night time or first thing in the morning when ones mouth feels like the bottom of a cockys cage, a good swig of that cleans your mouth out like a scouring pad and it feels like you've just brushed your teeth. ive often thought about putting a large commercial keg bottle hooked up but never bothered because of it being too cumbersome. i never knew these small ones were available but now that you have a workable bottle with the adapter im in.

Just watched your other video on refilling soda steam bottle from your 2.6kg cylinder, and you say you have to invert your 2.6kg cylinder when filling as it does not have internal tube to pass through gas into the co2, this being the case when direct hooking up soda stream machine via your hose to 2.6kg cylinder as in this video do you have to have 2.6kg cylinder inverted all the time?
@tonoosa

@Psi-Storm
@Psi-Storm 4 жыл бұрын
NO! You only want it inverted or with a riser tube, to get liquid CO2 out of the bottle, to fill smaller pressure bottles. For drinks, you want the gas CO2 from the top of the bottle. Filling liquid co2 into those drinking bottles will burst them from over pressure and it's definitely not healthy to try to drink that.

James, the gas being CO2 it is non-flammable, no risk of fire or explosion. What one needs to be aware of, the gas is under pressure, going into fittings on the Soda Stream are plastic, and only hand tight. So to avoid any leaks, as with any and all gas cylinders when not in use close the valve.

I went to an air-gas supplier here in Seattle and it was easy as pie... They sold me a 25# bottle with siphon tube (because you need the liquid at the bottom, not the gas at the top) (though you can also just turn the bottle upside down so liquid is coming out the valve)... Fittings were standard... I chose to recharge the little bottle that comes with the Drinkmate and NOT direct supply from the bigger bottle... If you choose to supply from the bigger bottle, you want the gas, not the liquid CO2... Just tell the gas supplier what you're doing and they'll set you up... Direct from big bottle... Gas Charging little bottle... Liquid Turned out to be an easy job... And one more thing... I found that if you charge the water bottle once, take it off and shake it a few seconds, you can charge more CO2 into it... Hope this all helps.

@KegLand
@KegLand 3 жыл бұрын
When refilling a soda stream bottle, you need to turn the larger host bottle up side down (if your cylinder does not have a dip tube) to allow the liquid transfer of CO2. When using the freedom one hose, you want just high pressure gas going up to the Soda stream machine and hence why you do not need to turn it upside down.

Hello, wonderful information. Question/Advice- I have the SodaStream Fizzi One Touch. I have used it for about 6 months. I too like the idea of having a bigger tank, so I went with a 20lb unit. I purchased the adapter hose and after connecting, the line pressurizes but when depressing the autofill button, no CO2 comes out of the stem. It works fine with the smaller canister, so I do not think it is clogged. So, any advice on where I am going wrong would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Once the sodastream unit has its small bottle removed, it weighs almost nothing and wants to follow wherever the stiff adapter hose sends it, which is annoying. I routed the hose in a gap between the countertop and a free standing stove, and lived with the unit sitting on an angle rather than take to my top with a hole saw. Eventually I reverted to filling the small cylinders as I'm not willing to butcher my counter top.

Hi there @kegland - question: I've got one of your sodastream to external CO2 bottles adapters. It works great BUT.... after I dispense gas from the bottle via the sodastream it keeps leaking gas through the nozzle of the soda stream unit (you can tell because there are little bubbles of gas still emerging into the bottle of water you just fizzed even though you are no longer depressing the bottom on top). Tried a new sodastream unit (different model) - same problem. You can stop this by turning off the as bottle itself but that's a pain everytime you want to gas something. Any thoughts????

if you get a CO2 ball valve at the bottle (for your sanity's sake dont google CO2 ball cock, its proper name, like i just did lmao) - at least shutting off the gas would be a 90 degree lever turn instead of many turns?

I have this problem too, and I realised it is because the valve that connects to the soda machine is leaking, not the machine itself. What did you do about this in the end? I got mine from aliexpress and I guess it's just a faulty valve.

In the UK so not in your part of the world, but I've just got a cylinder of CO2 to use with my soda stream..Can i ask if you turn the CO2 gas cylinder back off after you have added the right amount co2 in your 1 litre bottle using the straight to soda machine method?? or can it be left open all the time?? Thanks for your great tutorial, i have decided that its far cheaper to buy a big cylinder. Here in the UK its stupidly expensive to keep buying soda stream gas from soda stream them selves..
@KegLand

Once you have done a pressure check and make sure you have no leaks in the system you can just leave the gas cylinder turned on all the time. No need to turn it off. We do sell under the counter water carbonators now that are even better if you can be bothered plumbing these into your bench. So it's worth looking at these too

Yes this is the older model and the new hoses do not use this quick disconnect. The quick disconnect really was not that necessary and it meant customers had more o-rings to worry about so we got rid of this QD fitting all together.

@barryw2659

Ralph, I came here with the same situation. I just bought a Drinkmate to hook up to my 5 lb CO2 tank. If you look at the Drinkmate directions you can see that it takes standardized 60L and 10L CO2 cylinders, so I am assuming the fitting is also standardized. But my understanding is that SodaStream is not customized cylinders because people buying refills is how they make their money. So I am wondering if the two fittings are the same. Also, I want to find out if the fitting this company uses is different because they are in Australia. I will be happy to update you on info I find, if you still need it, and would appreciate you doing the same, if you don't mind. Thanks.

Hello, does anyone know what my machine is leaking gas from the top that inserts into the water bottle? I've ordered 2 of these things already.. they both worked for 2 days then they leak from the very tip. It seams as if the part that connects to the soda machine has a spring type of valve pin and that pin keeps getting stuck and doesn't retract.. any recommendation would be appreciated, thank you!
@KegLand
@KegLand 2 жыл бұрын
If this is happening on a regular basis then you might want to look at the source of gas. If you have rust in the gas cylinder or other contamiination this is the most likely cause as this type of contamination gets stuck into the pin. You can take apare the valve and clean this out fairly easily but if you cylinder is dirty inside the issue will keep happening.

@@KegLand thank you for the reply! I will try to clean out the spring/retractable pin part. Also, the cylinder I have was given to me by my neighbor who owned it for years it came with the gas filled inside.. so that's very likely the situation! Old, dirty, tank 😁 thank again! 🍻✌️😎

@@KegLand but is it advised not too use a dip tube when using the large canister as this gets the liquid c02 rather than the gas at the top which would transfer without the dip tube? Apparently liquid c02 (dip tube) vs gas (dip tube removed) has a worse more affected flavour in the water? Is this correct? I have seen this dip tube warning on these adapter wires and am currently using one with a dip tube and feel like the flavour is strange. Any advice?
@KegLand
@KegLand 3 жыл бұрын
@@only1davidobrien that doesnt make sense at all. The liquid dip tube is fine and many CO2 refill stations fill smaller CO2 cylinders from a liquid dip tube bottle. There is no difference between using a liquid dip tube bottle and getting a bottle without liquid dip tube and inverting it.

the person who was selling CO2 to me explained that there are no "food grade CO2". What is important is 1st. their equipment needs to be very clean 2nd. your equipment also need to be very clean. (dont use tanks that contain lead in them, usually paintball tanks do have lead) If all equipment is very clean, the CO2 safe to consume. If not, the CO2 is contaminated. Not saying it is the absolute truth, but that is what I understood from the person who sold me CO2, who seems very trustworthy.
