Fun fact: my high school chemistry teacher was doing some inventory soon after he started at the school. He found a lot of this stuff, stored in oil, but not sealed well. He claimed it was enough to blow up the entire lab. He wasn't the type to exaggerate, but it probably wasn't likely to happen. Still, he had a HAZMAT team remove it from the building.

As long as the Na is submerged in oil it should'nt have been a problem as far as I'm concerned, since the oxide layer + oil should be enough to prevent any reaction with the surrounding humidity (idk if your school stored it in a sauna tho)

Yeah if it was even as much as we see in this video and it was stored next to, say, h2o2, hcl, and h2so4, all things ik we used in my hs chem lab, it not only could have blown up the storage room/area but created mustard gas. And given the heat of the chemical reaction caused my mixing all those solutions, it might very well have ignited the pil the Na was stored in, and *then* you have a bigger problem on your hands, because plenty of volatile things in labs will blow up on contact with heat. Your teacher was right to have a hazmat team remove it.
