Klaus suffered the most because he was a product of a affair by his beloved wife after the loss of Freya in his grieving . He plays a part in Esther’s affair by emotionally abandoning her and blaming her for several years. Esther was to blame because she made the devil deal but he never took it out directly on her it was always the physical reminder Klaus who payed the price.
