m0a.com It's not often that we get to practice a real soft field landing. In todays video I'll take you for a lap in the pattern inside an actual soft field landing.

My flight Instructor says to always do a soft field landing, even if the field isn't soft. Ever since he told me that, my landings have been getting alot smoother and more comfortable. Its nice watching your videos along side my Instructor's teaching

I was taught not to idle the engine during a soft field landing until I turned off the runway. In other words, keep enough power going to keep the nose wheel slightly off the ground when the stick is pulled back.

Jason you should come fly here in the UK. Grass runway everywhere, it's your lucky day when you land on tarmac :)

The last time I remember doing a soft field landing for real was during my private pilot training, about 38 years ago! I guess I am overdue.

Hello. I'm from Poland. My Aeroklub only has grass strip 700m long. For me its much more easier to land on grass strip than on asphalt. Only hard thing is after heavy rain because than C150 controls on ground are like driving a boat.

Its so interesting to me the different types of flying people do. Backcountry is my favorite type of flying, I never considered that there's tons of pilots out there that have never or rarely done true soft feild ops.

Love the Instruction in the video. Also love the drone shot. I'm interested in doing some shots like that. Wondering if there a camera operator in addition to the Remote PIC (like can be used with a DJI Inspire), mostly for that pan and follow part. Very Nice!

My buddy from ACI and I took a 172 up to El Mirage dry lakebed in the CA desert a while back, we even brought our pistols to shoot on the lake bed but we could not land with that desert crosswind! Full correction in, landing the right direction and the wind was still changing direction, must have been 20 knots or so! Would’ve been macho if we did land lol!

October 2012 - Soft/Short landing at Pierson, FL (2J8) Rwy 05 (2600ft) when it had the trees at the end of the runway. I think the trees are now cleared out. I got to go back and practice again.

I thought the same thing! Super dangerous if a go-around is needed! I just did soft & short field training last week, and official documents state that no matter the circumstance, carburetor heat should be used when power is brought out of the green range while in flight. He also did not add full flaps... He did touch down very smoothly but full flaps is also a procedure for soft landings.
@adamdargavel774 жыл бұрын
@@heregoesmike he did say it was gusty, so perhaps why he didn't use full flaps

I just have 1 question, why are you using carb heat in this occasion? its because the weather or to precation with the grass that can block the intake port? happy landings!

Can I respectfully ask why did you only use 20* flaps? The whole purpose of a soft field landing is to minimize weight on all wheels, not just the nose, while rolling out of the landing? 40* flaps would be better for that (It's in my flying school's training regiment). You'll get more float with full flaps, but it just makes for a way softer landing. Also, taking the carb heat off when out of the green range while in flight isn't advisable in the case that a go-around is needed. you'll get a very laggy throttle response if you need to snap to full throttle for whatever reason... That's just my opinion based on the training I have just done for my PPL. Would love your input @MzeroA Flight Training
@russellburnup19393 жыл бұрын
because of wind conditions, it was very gusty. What happens to stability when flaps are increased and in ground effect, is the aircraft more or less stable? Think about it.

Everytime i try soft field landings (on pavement) the nose bounces down and back up and down... i dont understand how people keep it so smoothly u0
@jean-christopheasselin19393 жыл бұрын
really not intuitive but as you flare and pull the yoke, each time you pull on it, don't give any of it back. the plane is gonna stall an inch above the runway and the mains will touchdown. You still keep the yoke position and the speed decrease because of the ground contact is gonna make the nose wheel come down by it's down. Took me some time to beat my habits.

Do CFIs start feeling more comfortable in the right seat than the left after so much training?
@MzeroAFlightTraining3 жыл бұрын
Hello! This depends on the person. Some instructors swap back and forth between seats and can feel equally comfortable in both. Some spend more time in the right seat and feel more comfortable in it. It all depends! Thanks for watching!

What about a soft AND short field landing? Balance of wheel braking and aerodynamic braking?
@heregoesmike4 жыл бұрын
One should always be leery of fields that are both soft and short. Mostly because there are usually obstacles at the end of a short, soft field. If you somehow by chance get in there, god luck getting back out. (I was just trained that last week in my PPL training).
@philconey113 жыл бұрын
@@heregoesmike Many commercial operators fly into and out of short/soft fields. They're unavoidable. A short/soft field landing consists of protecting the nose wheel while applying controlled braking. They wanted you, specifically, to avoid short and soft fields because at the time you posted this comment you were a brand spanking new student pilot and there was a 90% chance you would damage the aircraft. I'm assuming that now, 11 months later, you're probably at least commercially certificated so you've done a soft field landing or two.

Why did you leave so much runway behind you? Most grass strips are short

Shouldn't we avoid Carb Heat on final in case of go around to have full RPM power?
