Sobering, the passage of time. Here, Wyatt was this young, robust fellow. Now Hopper is gone. Time stops for no one, but at least this glorious music lives on with video and records. I must have listened to "Outbloodyrageous" a million times. It never fails to give me a sense of the passage of time and the past. I'm happy to see so many others here that were - and still are - touched by these guys.

Thanks to whoever filmed this and whoever posted, it is wonderful, from a time when musicianship really counted, all three are amazing, but I especially like Hugh Hoppers bass lines, he is really cooking at the end; one of their best tunes too.

beautiful, Soft Machine music is still as daring and powerful as ever
No one understands the role of vocals as an instrument better than Robert Wyatt. His combination of riffing on existing lyrics and extemporaneous lines is exquisite. Moon In June is the piece that best allows him to express this. It's just beautiful!

WOW. Went to see Soft machine when i was about 11 with Alan Holdsworth Not listened to them much since but i have been reading a biography of Pink Floyd and they feature widly in the seminal Barrett era The influences are clear on both sides there must be some argument as to the what where and when but its all incredible music. Many thanks for posting this

That early version of the Soft Machine during Syd's time with Floyd were a different animal, same as Floyd really. Being formed by Daevid Allen and members of the Wilde Flowers, a lot more vocal. You can only hear a record they recorded but went unreleased at the time, but since has under one title of Jet Propelled Photograph if you want to hear what they were like in the studio, live they were different and more experimental. If you contact Gong official website www.planetgong.co.uk you can get a copy of a later band working with Daevid called University of Errors and there is a DVD of them playing a lot of early SM songs from that record . It was recorded in 2006 and the group are a fine bunch of players, so all the studio albums they did with Daevid are a great listen also. Have fun

The lower one is a Lowrey Holiday Deluxe organ (Mike's trademark). He later started using a Hohner Pianet on top of the Lowrey, but that doesn't look like the Pianet in this footage (must be some sort of electric piano.)

I think instead Syd should have joined the Soft Machine or at least formed a band with Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt with Dave Stewart (from Egg) on keyboards. Now that would have been a wild band.

Like the way the bassist treats his instrument like a guitar at different parts. I think the insinuation he makes by doing this actually invites for more experimentation.

What I find so tragic about the way this band fell apart; the tensions and stress that made monumental music - like this excertpt shows - turned into mutual unfriendlines; the Soft Machine had to become Hard, and that is fucking sad (though it had to be) Sheer momentum that destroyed the rich artistic future + development these lads could have had through the 70's, with the contributions of Daevid, & most of all, Robert. I am not complaining. I express my regret.

como suena esta banda ! Tienen un sonido particular que no escuche en ninguna otra banda, lo que la hace única, a mi parecer.
God bless who ever first got this footage to place on KZbin - now THIS is truly adventurous stuff. The so-called jam bands or "jazz-inspired" bands today (MM&W) can't hold a candle to this stuff... too bad. And doesn't it sort of make you a bit weepy seeing Robert Wyatt in his young prime, considering what happened to him later...?
